To use the histogram on an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max, open Camera, tap the Camera Controls button, and choose Histogram. You can also add it to the controls above the frame for quicker access. The graph helps you judge exposure across the scene as you compose; it does not automatically correct exposure or dictate how every image should look.
Who can use the iPhone histogram?
Apple documents the histogram and new Pro camera controls for iPhone 18 Pro models. Its September 9, 2026 announcement says users can use a histogram to check exposure levels throughout a scene, alongside manual adjustments such as aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. Apple’s announcement names both iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

How to turn on the histogram
- Open Camera.
- Tap the Camera Controls button, then choose Histogram.
- For faster access, add Histogram to the controls above the frame. Apple’s iPhone guide explains these access options in Use advanced camera tools on iPhone.
- Compose your shot and watch the graph. Apple describes the histogram as a way to check exposure across the frame while composing.
How to read the graph
The histogram maps tones from darker to brighter: shadows appear toward the left, highlights toward the right, and intermediate brightness levels in the middle. If the graph is heavily bunched at one edge, that can alert you to very dark or very bright parts of the scene. It is a cue to inspect the image, not a universal target: a night scene may naturally have substantial information in the shadows, while a bright scene may lean toward highlights.

Use the graph alongside the image on screen. Decide whether the bright or dark areas matter to the photograph you want, then adjust your composition or exposure settings as appropriate. The histogram itself is an exposure aid, not an automatic correction.

What the three histogram views show
MacRumors reports that tapping the histogram cycles among three views. Apple’s support instructions describe how to access the tool but do not list these modes.

How histogram access fits with other Pro controls
Apple’s advanced camera tools also include manual aperture, shutter speed, and white balance adjustments. Its guide lists Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, and Time-Lapse for those manual adjustments. That list concerns the manual adjustments; it should not be taken to mean every control has identical availability or behavior in every camera mode. The histogram’s documented role is checking exposure while composing.
