The premise that the iPhone 18 Pro’s battery life drops sharply from its predecessor is not supported by the independent tests published so far. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide both measured longer runtimes than the iPhone 17 Pro generation: about 16 hours 17 minutes for the iPhone 18 Pro against 15 hours 21 minutes for the iPhone 17 Pro. Faster wired charging is real too, but it is a separate matter from endurance. Here is what each test measured, and why the numbers don’t line up with Apple’s own claims.
What the independent tests found
Two outlets have published runtime figures that compare the new Pro models with the iPhone 17 Pro generation. Both show modest gains. Neither shows a decline. If “predecessor” means a phone other than the iPhone 17 Pro, these tests do not cover that comparison, so no claim about it can be made here.

The table shows TechRadar’s lab results, published September 16, 2026. Tom’s Guide, in its September 2026 review, reports identical averages: 16:17 for the Pro and 18:27 for the Pro Max, against 15:21 and 17:54 for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.
How each outlet tested
- TechRadar: its standard test cycles through websites over a cellular connection until the battery is depleted. Location services, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and iOS battery management features are turned off.
- Tom’s Guide: continuous web surfing over 5G at 150 nits of screen brightness.
The two outlets use different methods but report matching numbers. Neither source describes a shared cross-publication protocol, so treat each result as belonging to its own method. Compare only like with like: same workload, network, brightness, battery settings, model tier and region.

Why Apple’s numbers look so different
Apple’s announcement on September 9, 2026 lists up to 36 hours of video playback for the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for the eSIM-only Pro Max. Those are manufacturer claims for video playback. The independent figures above come from cellular web browsing. Different workloads produce different totals, so a 36-hour claim and a 16-hour test result do not contradict each other.
Apple’s wording is: “Both iPhone 18 Pro models feature updated battery designs that support faster wired charging and leverage powerful silicon efficiencies to deliver incredible battery life.” It also says the Pro Max “delivers the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone, thanks to advancements in Apple silicon and a larger battery.” That is marketing language. In the lab tests, the Pro Max’s gain over its predecessor (roughly 3%) was smaller than the Pro’s (about 6%). So TechRadar’s results do not obviously back the “largest increase” claim for the Pro Max, at least under that outlet’s test.

Tom’s Guide ran a separate charging test:

These figures are Tom’s Guide’s results for its own setup. Apple’s own fast-charging claim carries its own conditions. Apple says it tested in July 2026 on preproduction devices and software, using a USB-C charge cable or MagSafe charger and its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max.

What you need for the fastest wired charging
- A USB-C cable rated for 60W.
- An adapter that supports USB PD 3.1 or better with Adjustable Voltage Supply.
A charger shortens refill time, but it does not extend how long the phone runs on a charge.

Battery capacity: be careful with the numbers
Tom’s Guide, citing iFixit’s teardown, reports 4,288 mAh for the North American iPhone 18 Pro and 5,567 mAh for the Pro Max. The same article reports EU listing capacities of 4,056 mAh and 5,391 mAh. This is secondary reporting, and the gap suggests that capacity varies by market or configuration. Check the label or teardown for your region before relying on a figure. Capacity also does not determine runtime on its own. Silicon efficiency and software matter as well, which is why Apple credits both the battery and the chip.

Apple Support separates two ideas: battery life is how long the device runs before it needs recharging, and battery lifespan is how long until the battery needs replacing. Chemical aging, charge cycles and care affect lifespan, and an aging battery can lose maximum capacity and the ability to deliver peak power. Apple advises avoiding hot environments for charging or storage. This concerns long-term wear and is not evidence of a new decline in the iPhone 18 Pro.

How to read test claims
- Look at the Pro and Pro Max separately. Their runtimes differ by about two hours in these tests.
- Check whether a figure is video playback, web browsing or mixed use.
- Check which settings were disabled. TechRadar turned off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, location and battery management features, which real use rarely does.
- Treat results from preproduction units, such as Apple’s charging claim, as manufacturer conditions rather than independent confirmation.
