The changes look substantial, though Apple’s “huge leaps” language is its own claim, not independent proof that every owner should upgrade. The Pro Max adds a larger screen and lasted longer in one publication’s controlled battery test; the Pro costs less and is easier to handle.
What’s new, and is Apple really “flexing”?
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. Availability began September 18 in initial markets, with some additional markets starting September 25, according to Apple’s launch announcement.

The clearest hardware change is the 48MP Fusion Main camera’s variable aperture. Apple also presents camera, performance, battery and intelligence as major areas of improvement. That is a manufacturer’s positioning; independent testing supports some of the performance story, while camera benefits depend on what and how you shoot.
What is different between iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max?
| Measure | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Display size | 6.3 inches (Tom’s Guide, 2026) | 6.9 inches (Tom’s Guide, 2026) |
| U.S. launch starting price | $1,199 for 256GB (Tom’s Guide, 2026) | $1,299 for 256GB (Tom’s Guide, 2026) |
| Storage tiers listed | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB (Tom’s Guide, 2026) | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB (Tom’s Guide, 2026) |
| Average continuous 5G web-browsing test | 16 hours 17 minutes | 18 hours 27 minutes |
The battery figures are Tom’s Guide’s 2026 results with screen brightness set to 150 nits; they are not a promise of everyday runtime. Actual endurance varies with settings, signal, apps and workload. The launch prices are reported U.S. starting prices, not current retailer quotes; prices and stock can change.

Choose the Pro for a smaller phone and lower entry price
The 6.3-inch Pro is the more compact option and starts $100 below the Pro Max in the reported U.S. launch configuration. It shares the same listed storage tiers. It is the more natural fit if a large handset feels unwieldy or you do not want to pay extra primarily for screen size and the Pro Max’s stronger result in this particular battery test.
Choose the Pro Max for a larger screen and longer result in this test
The 6.9-inch Pro Max gives more screen space and ran 2 hours 10 minutes longer than the Pro in Tom’s Guide’s continuous 5G browsing test. That is a meaningful difference under those test conditions, not evidence that every user will see the same gap in daily use.
How much better is the camera?
The main camera’s variable aperture is the most concrete camera change described in the launch materials. Tom’s Guide says it can adjust automatically and offers four manual aperture options in Pro camera controls. Aperture affects how much light reaches the sensor and how much of a scene appears in focus, so the added control can help adapt exposure and depth of field to a shot.
That does not mean every image will be better, or that aperture control alone guarantees improved low-light photos or portraits. The practical advantage is flexibility: the camera can make adjustments for you, while manual options give photographers more say over the look. Apple identifies the camera as a major upgrade, but the available evidence here does not establish a universal improvement across photo types.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro have a Face ID problem?
Tom’s Guide reported that some Face ID failures could lead to a restart, then updated its report to say an iOS 27 update fixed the issue. The report does not establish how often the problem occurred, so it should not be read as an incidence rate or proof of a widespread hardware fault. If you encounter a Face ID issue, check for the latest iOS update and Apple’s current support guidance.
How strong is the sustained performance?
In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test, the iPhone 18 Pro scored 62.8% stability and the Pro Max scored 79.4%. For comparison, the same report gave the iPhone 17 Pro 61.1%, the iPhone 17 Pro Max 65.2%, and the Galaxy S26 Ultra 53.9%. These percentages describe stability in that named stress test; they are not a general speed ranking or a guarantee of performance in every game or app.
The Pro Max’s larger result is particularly notable, while the Pro’s score is only modestly higher than the previous Pro’s in this test. Taken together, the figures suggest the new generation’s sustained-performance story is strongest for the Max in this specific workload. They do not, by themselves, show how much faster everyday tasks feel.
What do the display measurements tell you?
Tom’s Guide measured peak brightness on the Pro Max at 2,326 nits in a 25% window and 1,762 nits in a 10% window; its Pro measurements were 2,314 nits and 1,627 nits, respectively. These are publication lab measurements at different test-window sizes, not Apple-rated maximum brightness figures. The results indicate strong measured brightness, but the values should not be treated as one universal screen-output number.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth upgrading to?
It is most compelling if you specifically want the variable-aperture camera controls, a new Pro phone, or the strongest sustained-performance showing documented here. The case is less clear for someone whose current phone already meets their needs: Tom’s Guide’s independent evidence is early, and it does not establish long-term reliability or a universal day-to-day improvement over an older iPhone.
- Consider upgrading if camera flexibility or sustained performance matters enough to justify a new phone at the reported launch pricing.
- Consider the Pro Max if you want its larger display and prefer its result in Tom’s Guide’s battery and stress tests, and are comfortable with the larger size.
- Consider the Pro if you value a more manageable 6.3-inch handset and lower entry price.
- Wait or keep your current phone if the new camera controls do not solve a real need and you want more evidence about long-term use.
