Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAt their U.S. launch, the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 both cost $799—but the iPhone 17 started with 256GB of storage, while the iPhone 16 started with 128GB. That gives the newer phone more storage per launch dollar. It does not settle which is the better buy today: current prices for comparable phones, with the same storage, condition, carrier status, and warranty, are what determine value.
What did the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 cost at launch?
Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $799 for the standard iPhone 16 on September 9, 2024, and the same $799 starting price for the standard iPhone 17 on September 9, 2025. These are historical launch prices, not current retail quotes. Apple listed the iPhone 16 in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities; the iPhone 17 launched in 256GB and 512GB capacities.

That distinction matters when interpreting the matching prices: the iPhone 17’s base configuration includes twice the storage of the iPhone 16’s base configuration. The $899 launch price sometimes associated with the 2024 lineup was for the larger iPhone 16 Plus, not the standard iPhone 16. Apple’s iPhone 16 announcement and iPhone 17 announcement document the launch prices and capacities.
How to compare their cost now
There is no established October 2026 street-price figure here for either phone, including used, refurbished, or promotional offers. Check the current offer before deciding; do not treat launch MSRP as today’s price or assume a fixed saving for the older model.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For a fair comparison, match the details that change what you receive and pay:
- Storage: Compare equal capacities if available. If considering the base models, account for the iPhone 17’s extra 128GB rather than treating them as equivalent configurations.
- Condition and warranty: Compare new with new, or refurbished/used devices with comparable condition and coverage.
- Carrier status: Check whether each phone is unlocked or tied to a carrier, and whether the offer requires activation or a particular plan.
- Trade-in and promotions: Calculate the effective cost only after checking eligibility, required service, and any conditions attached to the credit.
These checks can turn an apparent price difference into a different deal: a discounted iPhone 16 may be the better value if its price is sufficiently lower for your needs, while the iPhone 17’s larger base storage may justify paying more if you would otherwise buy a higher-capacity iPhone 16.

Storage and everyday use
The clearest price-to-spec advantage at launch is storage: 256GB on the iPhone 17 base model versus 128GB on the iPhone 16 base model. If you keep many photos and videos, download large files, or hold onto phones for years, that extra capacity may be useful. If you routinely use less than 128GB, it may have little practical value; check your current storage use before paying for capacity you do not need.
Display and performance
The iPhone 17 has a larger 6.3-inch display with adaptive refresh up to 120Hz, compared with the iPhone 16’s 6.1-inch display. That is a concrete reason to prefer the 17 if smoother scrolling or the larger screen matters to you. The A19 and A18 are different chip generations, but the cited specifications do not establish a quantified speed advantage, so the generation number alone is not a measured performance result.

Cameras
Apple describes the iPhone 17 as having a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, with a 48MP Fusion main camera, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, and 48MP macro photography. The iPhone 16 has a 48MP Fusion main camera with a 2x telephoto option and an Ultra Wide camera capable of macro photography. Both offer a 2x option; the iPhone 17’s listed Ultra Wide resolution and macro specification are a notable distinction if those features matter for your photography.
Features shared across generations
Apple lists both generations as supporting Apple Intelligence, so basic compatibility is not an iPhone 17-only reason to pay more. Availability of individual features can depend on software, language, and region. The iPhone 16 also includes Camera Control and the Action button. For current feature availability, consult Apple’s Apple Intelligence information for your market and software version.

Which iPhone is better value for you?
Choose the iPhone 17 if
- Comparable current offers put it close enough in price to the iPhone 16 that its extra base storage and newer display are worth the difference to you.
- You want the 6.3-inch screen and adaptive refresh up to 120Hz.
- You expect to use the Ultra Wide camera or macro photography and value the iPhone 17’s listed 48MP Ultra Wide.
Choose the iPhone 16 if
- Its current price is meaningfully lower for a comparable condition, storage, carrier status, and warranty.
- 128GB is enough for your use, or a higher-capacity iPhone 16 is still a better deal at the offer you find.
- The 6.1-inch screen and its camera features meet your needs, and the iPhone 17’s listed differences do not justify the added cost.
There is no independent comparative battery-life test or benchmark established here to quantify another reason to upgrade. Apple promotes faster charging and battery benefits for the iPhone 17, but a vendor description is not a controlled comparison. Likewise, Apple’s statement that the iPhone 17 has 30% recycled content and that 35% of its manufacturing electricity is renewable is an Apple-reported environmental specification, not an independently verified comparison with the iPhone 16. See Apple’s environmental reporting.
