Choose iPhone 17 for a newer everyday phone
The iPhone 17 gives you 256GB at its listed base configuration, compared with 128GB for the iPhone 16 Pro. It also uses the newer A19 chip, built on third-generation 3-nanometer technology, according to Apple. That identifies a newer chip generation, but it does not establish that every app or task will feel faster; the reviewed sources do not provide an independent head-to-head performance test.
Its 6.3-inch display supports adaptive ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On, and up to 3000 nits peak outdoor brightness. Apple also says its Ceramic Shield 2 coating offers three times better scratch resistance; that is Apple’s comparison claim, not an independent durability result. Apple states up to 30 hours of video playback, eight hours more than the previous generation, as a manufacturer figure rather than independent testing.

Choose iPhone 16 Pro for camera flexibility
The defining Pro advantage is its separate telephoto camera in a triple-camera system. That gives you a dedicated camera option for distant subjects, rather than relying on optical-quality 2x framing from the iPhone 17’s main camera. The 17’s 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide are substantial on paper, but megapixel counts alone do not establish which phone takes better photos overall.
What is the price difference?
PhoneArena lists U.S. launch MSRPs of $999 for the 128GB iPhone 16 Pro and $799 for the 256GB iPhone 17, a $200 difference at launch even though the iPhone 17 listing has twice the base storage. These are launch prices, not current transaction quotes.
