The iPhone 17 Pro starts $100 above the iPhone Air in Apple’s announced U.S. launch pricing, but the main trade-off is not storage or chip family: it is the Pro’s three-camera rear system and pro video features versus the Air’s thinner, lighter design and larger display. Both start with 256GB of storage and use A19 Pro chips.

How much more does the iPhone 17 Pro cost?
Apple announced U.S. starting prices of $1,099 for iPhone 17 Pro and $999 for iPhone Air in September 2025, a $100 difference before taxes, trade-ins, carrier offers, storage upgrades or subsequent price changes. These are historical launch figures, not a statement of current retail prices. Apple’s announcements provide the launch context for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air.
Actual prices and availability can change by country, retailer, carrier and date. Check Apple or local retailers for current pricing and confirm the configuration offered in your region before buying.

What the extra $100 gets you
A dedicated telephoto camera and three-camera system
The Pro has separate Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto 48MP Fusion rear cameras. That gives it a more explicitly versatile rear-camera arrangement for people who want a dedicated telephoto camera alongside the other viewpoints. Apple describes the Air as having a 48MP Fusion Main camera and equivalent focal-length options through its camera system; that description is not the same as listing three separate rear cameras.
Pro video features
Apple lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and genlock among the iPhone 17 Pro’s video features. These capabilities make the Pro the more natural choice for buyers whose work or workflow depends on Apple’s stated pro video tools. The supplied specifications do not establish independent footage quality or performance differences.

Where the iPhone Air has the edge
Thinner design and larger screen
Apple describes the Air as a 5.6mm-thick titanium phone and gives it a 6.5-inch OLED display. The 17 Pro has a 6.3-inch OLED display. Both support ProMotion up to 120Hz, so the Air’s distinction in this comparison is its larger display and thin-design emphasis rather than a higher stated refresh rate.

At launch in the U.S., the Air’s $999 starting price was $100 below the Pro’s $1,099 starting price. Since both models start at 256GB and use the A19 Pro chip family, the Air’s lower announced entry price is not explained by a smaller base storage figure or a different named chip family in Apple’s launch specifications.

Which iPhone should you choose?
- Choose iPhone 17 Pro if a dedicated telephoto camera, three-camera flexibility or Apple’s listed ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and genlock features matter to you.
- Choose iPhone Air if you place more value on a very thin titanium design, a 6.5-inch display and the lower announced U.S. entry price.
- Compare the exact configurations if you are buying outside the U.S. or considering more storage: the prices here are Apple’s September 2025 U.S. launch figures, and current local prices are not established by those announcements.
Apple’s description of the Air as “impossibly thin and light” came from John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, in the company’s announcement. It is promotional language, not an independent measurement or test result.
