Reels can help you reach people who do not follow you, but no format, posting schedule, hashtag count, or ranking trick guarantees growth.
Start with a clear reason to follow
A person who discovers one of your posts should be able to tell quickly what they will get by following the account. Define the subject, intended audience, and the value you offer—such as practical explanations, original demonstrations, useful recommendations, or a distinctive point of view.

Make that promise consistent across your profile and posts. If each post seems aimed at a different audience, a visitor may enjoy one item without knowing what future posts will offer.
Make original content worth watching
Build each post or Reel around a useful point, demonstration, story, perspective, or entertaining idea. A trend can provide a starting point, but the contribution should be yours and relevant to the people you want to reach. Re-uploading someone else’s work is not a dependable audience-growth strategy.

Give viewers a reason to stay with the content: explain the payoff early, keep the central idea easy to follow, and remove material that does not serve it. Meta says recommendation systems use viewer feedback—including whether someone watches a video through or likes a post—to refine future recommendations. That is a general explanation, not a complete disclosure of Instagram’s ranking system or proof that any single action guarantees more followers. Meta’s explanation of recommendations for unconnected content was published in 2023.
Use Reels to explore discovery
Reels are one way to introduce your work to people who do not yet follow you. Choose a format that fits the idea and your audience rather than making every post a video. Instagram’s Best Practices hub treats creation and reach as connected topics, while leaving room for different approaches. Meta announced the Best Practices hub on October 1, 2024; it is available in the professional dashboard and covers creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines.

When filming, prioritize a clear message and intelligible sound. A smartphone tripod or an external microphone may make recording easier, but buying equipment is not itself an established way to increase reach or followers.
Experiment with Trial Reels when available
Trial Reels let creators try a Reel with non-followers first, offering a way to test a concept beyond an existing audience. Meta announced on June 12, 2025 that the feature had been made available to everyone. Availability and how features appear can change, so check your Instagram app for current access. Meta’s announcement on Trial Reels describes the capability.

Use a trial to compare creative ideas, not to declare a universal winner from one post. Look at whether the content reached people you want to attract and whether the response supports making more in that direction.
Review your account’s guidance and results
Instagram’s professional dashboard is the place to find its Best Practices hub and personalized tips based on account performance. Meta says the hub includes guidance across creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines; its Reach material discusses algorithms and the relationship between Reels and follower growth. Treat these as platform guidance for your account, not a promise of a particular outcome.

- Choose a clear audience and content idea. Make one post or Reel with a specific benefit or point of view for that audience.
- Check available account guidance. In Instagram, open your profile, go to the professional dashboard, and look for Best Practices. Labels and access can vary as the app changes.
- Review the result. Consider whether the post reached the intended people and whether its engagement suggests the idea was useful or compelling.
- Adjust and repeat. Make another version, test a different concept, or move on. Judge patterns across repeated attempts rather than treating a single result as a rule.
How often should you post?
There is no universal posting frequency established here as best for follower growth. Choose a cadence you can sustain while keeping your content relevant and well-made. Use your own account’s results and Instagram’s personalized guidance to decide whether to adjust it; a fixed schedule or a particular number of posts per week cannot be promised to work for every account.
