At their U.S. launch prices, the iPhone 17 Pro Max cost $1,199 and the iPhone Air cost $999—a $200 difference before tax, storage upgrades, carrier offers, or trade-in credits. The Pro Max offers a larger screen, more rear-camera options, advanced video formats, and higher Apple-stated battery playback figures. The Air is much thinner and lighter. Both have an A19 Pro chip and a 120Hz ProMotion display, but Apple lists a six-core GPU in the Pro Max and a five-core GPU in the Air.

What the $200 launch price difference means
Apple’s September 9, 2025 U.S. launch announcements listed the Pro Max at $1,199 and the Air at $999. That made the Pro Max $200 more at the entry storage tier at launch. These figures are launch prices, not a claim about current retail prices. They exclude taxes, storage upgrades, financing costs, and any discounts or trade-in value.

Those historical offers do not establish what is available now. Before buying, compare the price for the storage tier you actually need and check current local pricing, carrier conditions, trade-in valuation, taxes, and the total cost of any financing.

Where the Pro Max has an advantage
A more flexible rear-camera array
The Pro Max has Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto cameras. Its 4x telephoto and 12MP optical-quality 8x telephoto option give it longer-reach framing than the Air, while the Ultra Wide adds a distinct field of view. The Air uses one rear 48MP Fusion camera; it can provide 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto framing, but it does not have a separate Ultra Wide or Telephoto camera.
More listed video-production tools
Apple lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, ACES, genlock, and ProRes recording up to 4K at 120 frames per second with external recording for the Pro Max. The Air’s listed formats include HEVC/H.264 and Dolby Vision up to 4K at 60 frames per second. These specifications distinguish the available workflows; they do not establish which phone produces better-looking footage in every situation.

A bigger display and higher stated playback maximums
The Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display, compared with the Air’s 6.5-inch screen. Both use OLED and support ProMotion up to 120Hz, so the Pro Max’s advantage is screen size rather than a higher listed refresh rate. Apple rates Pro Max video playback at up to 39 hours and streamed video playback at up to 35 hours; its Air figures are up to 27 and 22 hours, respectively.
Where the iPhone Air makes the trade-off
The Air weighs 165g and is 5.64mm deep; the Pro Max weighs 233g and is 8.75mm deep. By Apple’s published measurements, that makes the Air 68g lighter and 3.11mm thinner. This is the clearest reason to favor the Air if a lighter, slimmer phone matters more to you than having multiple rear cameras, the Pro Max’s listed video options, or its larger display.

The Air’s single rear camera still supports optical-quality 2x framing, and its OLED display has the same 120Hz ProMotion ceiling. It also shares the A19 Pro chip family, though Apple lists one fewer GPU core than in the Pro Max. The specifications alone do not quantify real-world performance differences.
Battery figures and the optional Air battery
Apple lists the Air at up to 27 hours of video playback and up to 22 hours of streamed video playback. With the iPhone Air MagSafe Battery accessory, Apple’s listed figures rise to up to 40 hours and 35 hours, respectively. Those accessory figures are not the phone-only estimates. Apple’s playback claims depend on network configuration and other factors, and actual battery life varies.

Shared features and important qualifications
- Both phones have an A19 Pro chip, an 18MP Center Stage front camera, an OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, and an IP68 rating.
- Apple specifies IP68 under IEC 60529 and says both models were tested to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. Water resistance is not permanent and may decrease with normal wear.
- The Pro Max uses an aluminum unibody; the Air is described as a titanium design. Both have a Ceramic Shield 2 front and a Ceramic Shield back. These material descriptions do not establish a durability ranking.
- Apple’s Air launch announcement identifies N1 support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, as well as the C1X cellular modem. Apple says C1X is up to 2x faster than C1 and uses 30 percent less energy overall; these are Apple’s claims, not independent test results.
Which iPhone should you choose?
Choose iPhone 17 Pro Max if
- You often use an Ultra Wide camera or want longer telephoto reach.
- You need the video formats and synchronization tools Apple lists for the Pro Max.
- You prefer a larger display, want the option of 2TB storage, or value Apple’s higher stated phone-only playback figures.
Choose iPhone Air if
- A thinner, lighter phone is more important to you than a multi-camera rear system.
- The single rear camera’s 2x optical-quality framing meets your needs.
- You want the lower U.S. launch starting price and do not need the Pro Max’s additional camera and video features.
Check the current price of each model at the same storage tier before deciding: the $200 difference describes their U.S. entry-level launch prices, not necessarily today’s gap between retailer or carrier offers.
