Raspberry Pi 5 as a Roku Replacement: When a DIY TV Box Makes Sense

A Raspberry Pi 5 has the hardware for a customizable TV media player, especially for local media. Subscription-app support is a separate question, so weigh flexibility against the convenience of a certified streamer.

A Raspberry Pi 5 can be the heart of a customizable HDMI media player, particularly for local media and general-purpose use. It is not established as a certified substitute for a Roku or Fire TV Stick: the board’s 4K video hardware does not by itself guarantee that subscription apps, DRM, or 4K streaming will work. Choose a Pi for flexibility and tinkering; choose a certified streamer or your TV’s built-in platform if dependable mainstream apps and an easy setup matter most.

What a Raspberry Pi 5 can—and cannot—replace

The Pi 5 has useful media-player hardware: Raspberry Pi Ltd lists a 2.4 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor, dual 4Kp60 HDMI output with HDR, and a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. It also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, and a microSD slot. Those specifications make it a credible base for a custom TV-connected computer.

They do not establish that a DIY setup is certified for Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, or other subscription services, or that those services will play at a particular resolution. App availability and playback can depend on the operating system, app support, DRM, and the exact playback path. Check the services you rely on before buying parts; the cited official Raspberry Pi material does not settle this compatibility question.

It is more accurate to call the result a custom media player or DIY TV box than a homemade Fire TV Stick. Amazon’s Fire TV developer material concerns building apps for its platform, not instructions for reproducing the commercial device from Pi components.

Built for Projects & Learning: Ideal for programming, home labs, DIY electronics, automation, and Linux-based development.

Choose by how you watch

  • Consider a Pi build if you want to play local media, customize a general-purpose computer, or enjoy configuring and maintaining a project.
  • Choose a certified streamer or your TV’s built-in platform if your priority is a straightforward setup, familiar remote controls, and reliable access to mainstream streaming apps.

For a concrete off-the-shelf comparison, Roku’s setup instructions describe connecting a streaming stick to HDMI and installing updates. Roku lists the Streaming Stick 4K as supporting 720p HD, 1080p Full HD, 4K UHD, and HDR. That is a specification for the Roku product, not evidence that an unofficial Pi setup will deliver the same formats in commercial apps.

Parts to plan for in a Pi 5 media player

  • Raspberry Pi 5: the computer board and the base for the project.
  • USB-C power supply: Raspberry Pi Ltd recommends a high-quality 5V/5A supply. Its product page says, “We recommend a high-quality 5V 5A USB-C power supply, such as the new Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C Power Supply.”
  • Micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or adapter: the Pi 5 uses micro-HDMI, while a standard TV HDMI input uses HDMI.
  • microSD card: the board has a microSD slot; choose storage suitable for the operating system and media software you intend to use.
  • Case and cooling plan: Raspberry Pi Ltd says the Pi 5 “will perform best with active cooling.” Consider active cooling for sustained or demanding use.
  • Operating system and playback software: select these for your intended local-media or general-purpose use. Their compatibility with any particular subscription service must be checked separately.

Set expectations before assembling it

  1. List the services and files you need. Separate local video playback from subscription-app streaming. Do not infer app certification or resolution support from the Pi’s video decoder or HDMI specification.
  2. Verify subscription-service support for the exact setup. Look for confirmation from the service and the software you plan to use, including relevant DRM and resolution requirements. If that information is not established, treat the service as uncertain rather than assuming it will work.
  3. Plan the physical connections. Allow for USB-C power and the micro-HDMI connection to the television. Select a microSD card for your chosen software, and decide how the board will be housed and cooled.
  4. Account for ongoing setup and maintenance. Unlike a turnkey stick, a DIY player means choosing and configuring its software and looking after the computer. The exact steps depend on the operating system and media software you select.
  5. Compare total costs only after choosing the parts. The board is not the whole build, and the available specifications do not establish a current complete-build price or prove that DIY is cheaper. Compare the actual board, power supply, cable, storage, case, and cooling you would buy with the turnkey option.

Which route is the better Roku replacement?

For a low-effort replacement focused on commercial streaming, a certified device is the safer choice because its setup and supported formats are defined for that product. For a flexible project centered on local media and customization, a Pi 5 is a plausible foundation—but it should be approached as a small computer attached to a TV, not as a guaranteed clone of a certified streaming stick.
