Pick iPhone 17 Pro for a smaller phone
The Pro has a 6.3-inch OLED display and measures 150 mm high by 71.9 mm wide. Its smaller published dimensions make it the more compact option to carry and handle; that comfort assessment is an inference from size, not a measured ergonomics result.

Pick iPhone 17 Pro Max for more viewing area
The Max’s 6.9-inch OLED display is the better fit if you regularly read, watch video, or work with content on your phone and want more screen space. It measures 163.4 mm high by 78 mm wide, so that extra display area comes with a larger chassis.

Both displays are Super Retina XDR with 460 pixels per inch, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On, and up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness in Apple’s launch material. Apple’s regional pages show inconsistent weight entries, so verify the specification for your market and configuration rather than relying on a single weight figure.
The Pro Max does not add a higher-tier camera or chip
Apple lists the A19 Pro chip and the same three-camera 48MP Fusion rear camera system for both models, along with an 18MP Center Stage front camera. Apple describes telephoto options of 4x optical zoom at 100 mm and 8x optical zoom at 200 mm for both. The announcement also lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock support for both phones. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not independent image-quality findings. Apple’s announcement details the shared platform.

For photography or video, decide whether the larger phone suits your handling preferences and whether you need its storage capacity. The specifications do not establish a Max-only camera tier.

Battery: the Max has the higher Apple rating
Apple rates video playback at up to 31 hours on iPhone 17 Pro and up to 37 hours on iPhone 17 Pro Max. Those are manufacturer-rated maximums, not independent side-by-side test results or a guarantee of six additional hours in a typical day. Real runtime varies with use, settings, signal conditions, and other factors. Apple’s technical specifications list the ratings.

Apple says either model can charge to 50 percent in 20 minutes with an optional high-wattage USB-C adapter, citing its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max as an example. This charging figure depends on using a suitable adapter. Apple’s launch announcement describes the condition.

Apple announced the Pro in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities; the Pro Max adds a 2TB option. If you specifically need 2TB in this pair, the Max is the only choice.
