The iPhone 17 Pro Max is a conventional large-screen phone; the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra opens into a much larger 8-inch workspace. Choose the iPhone if you want a familiar slab design, Apple’s platform, or storage up to 2TB. Choose the Fold8 Ultra if its fold-out screen and multi-window flexibility matter enough to justify a foldable design and its higher listed US price.

How the displays change everyday use
iPhone 17 Pro Max: one large screen
Apple lists a 6.9-inch OLED display. It gives you a large viewing area without unfolding a device, making the iPhone the more straightforward choice if you want a conventional phone shape and do not need a tablet-sized screen in your pocket.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: cover screen plus inner workspace
The Fold8 Ultra combines a 6.5-inch, 2520 × 1080 cover display with an 8-inch, 2504 × 2256 Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display. Samsung lists support for up to 120Hz on both screens. The outer screen serves for phone-style use; unfolding provides more room for reading, viewing, and arranging multiple apps. That larger workspace is the central practical reason to choose the Fold.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The trade-off is the form factor: the Fold is a foldable, rather than a conventional slab phone. Whether the larger inner screen is worth carrying and using a foldable design is a personal preference, not something the display measurements alone can decide.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra more expensive?
The available US prices are not a like-for-like current comparison. Samsung’s US page showed the Fold8 Ultra from $2,099.99 before trade-in when accessed October 7, 2026; configuration and offers can change the price. TechRadar reported a US launch price of $1,199 for the 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max on June 1, 2026. That iPhone figure is historical launch pricing, not a confirmed current price, so subtracting it from Samsung’s listing would not establish today’s price difference.
For a reliable comparison, check both manufacturers’ live US prices on the same day, match storage where possible, and account for unlocked or carrier versions, discounts, and trade-in offers. The cited US Samsung page lists 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB options. Apple’s specifications list 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations; actual current prices for those tiers are not established by the cited figures.

Camera specifications: what they do and do not tell you
Samsung’s cited UK specification lists a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10MP telephoto camera, with 3x optical zoom and 8K video recording at 30fps. Apple’s September 2025 launch announcement describes three 48MP rear cameras, an 18MP Center Stage front camera, and 8x “optical-quality” zoom.
These are hardware and feature descriptions, not a controlled comparison of photo or video quality. Megapixel counts and zoom labels do not establish which phone takes better pictures in a particular situation. Apple’s announcement is available in its iPhone 17 Pro launch release.
Storage, weight, and portability
Apple offers the iPhone 17 Pro Max in capacities up to 2TB, while Samsung’s US Fold8 Ultra listing includes up to 1TB. If you routinely keep large files or recordings on the phone and want the higher listed capacity, the iPhone has the advantage in the configurations cited here.

Apple lists the iPhone at 233g. Samsung UK lists the cited 256GB Fold8 Ultra model at 215g. Those figures refer to the specified products and markets; they do not settle how either phone feels in use. The Fold’s distinguishing feature is that it opens to a larger screen, while the iPhone keeps a single-screen slab form.

Software, ecosystem, and performance
Choose based on the platform you prefer and the devices and services you already use. This comparison does not establish a matched performance or battery-life winner: no directly comparable test is available in the cited material. Apple executive Greg Joswiak described the iPhone 17 Pro’s performance and battery-life gains in Apple’s September 9, 2025 announcement, but that is a vendor statement, not an independent measurement.
Availability and release timing
Apple announced that iPhone 17 Pro Max availability would begin September 19, 2025. Samsung announced sales of the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra beginning August 7, 2026 in select markets, with worldwide expansion to follow. Samsung lists Samsung.com, Samsung Experience Stores, carriers, and retailers as sales channels. Availability and stock depend on location; Samsung’s August 6, 2026 launch announcement gives the company’s release details.
Which phone should you choose?
- Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if you will use the 8-inch inner screen as a larger workspace and value the ability to switch between a cover display and an unfolded screen.
- Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you prefer a conventional large-screen phone, want Apple’s platform, or need a listed storage option above 1TB.
- Compare current local prices before buying if budget is the deciding factor: the cited Fold price is a current US product-page figure from October 7, 2026, while the iPhone figure is a reported launch price for 256GB.
The release dates and market availability are based on Apple’s September 9, 2025 announcement and Samsung’s launch information; local stock can change.
