The iPhone 17 Pro is Apple’s 2025 Pro-tier iPhone in the smaller of two sizes: it has a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display. Introduced on September 9, 2025, the Pro combines an A19 Pro chip, three 48-megapixel rear cameras, an 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera, and an aluminum body with an Apple-designed vapor chamber. It uses eSIM rather than a physical SIM card.
What the iPhone 17 Pro is
Apple introduced the iPhone 17 Pro alongside the iPhone 17 Pro Max on September 9, 2025. It is a distinct model, not simply another name for the larger Pro Max: its 6.3-inch screen and smaller form factor make exact model identification important when choosing a case or other fit-specific accessory. Apple’s launch announcement and technical specifications describe the device and its features.

What the display and design offer
The 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display is an OLED panel with a resolution of 2622 by 1206 pixels at 460 pixels per inch. It supports ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and an Always-On display; Apple lists peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. The viewable area is slightly smaller than the standard rectangular measurement because of the display’s rounded corners.

The enclosure is an aluminum unibody, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. Apple lists the phone in Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue. It rates the device IP68 under IEC 60529, specifying a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. That rating is a controlled-condition specification, not a promise against all liquid exposure; Apple says liquid damage is not covered under warranty.

- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
How the cameras are configured
The rear system has three 48MP cameras, each intended for a different field of view:
- Main: 24mm-equivalent lens, ƒ/1.78 aperture, and second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
- Ultra Wide: 13mm-equivalent lens, ƒ/2.2 aperture, and a 120-degree field of view.
- Telephoto: 100mm-equivalent 4x lens, ƒ/2.8 aperture, and 3D sensor-shift stabilization.
Apple also specifies 200mm-equivalent 8x optical-quality telephoto framing, a 16x optical-quality zoom range, and digital zoom up to 40x. “Optical-quality” framing and digital zoom should not be read as interchangeable with optical zoom at every magnification. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage camera.

For video, Apple lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and Academy Color Encoding System support. The launch announcement also describes genlock as a production feature. Recording ProRes externally is required for 4K at 60 frames per second.
What the A19 Pro chip and cooling mean
The phone runs on Apple’s A19 Pro chip and incorporates an Apple-designed vapor chamber in its aluminum unibody. Apple says the combination enables up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation. That is Apple’s comparative claim, not an independent benchmark result.

Battery, charging, and connectivity
Apple rates the iPhone 17 Pro for up to 33 hours of video playback or up to 30 hours of streamed video playback. These are Apple’s stated maximums, not guarantees of everyday runtime. Wired charging can reach 50 percent in 20 minutes under Apple’s stated test conditions with a 40W-or-higher power adapter and USB-C cable; the adapter is sold separately, and results vary.
The USB-C port supports charging, DisplayPort, and USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gb/s. Wireless charging supports MagSafe and Qi2 up to 25W under Apple’s specified adapter and testing conditions.

The phone supports dual eSIM and is not compatible with physical SIM cards. Whether eSIM service is available depends on carrier and region, so check support before switching or buying a regional model.
Storage, box contents, and practical checks
Apple lists 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities. The box includes the iPhone, a 1-meter USB-C charge cable, and documentation; it does not include a power adapter or EarPods. If you want Apple’s stated 20-minute wired charge result, use a compatible 40W-or-higher adapter, but you do not need to buy another one if you already have a suitable adapter.
- Confirm that an accessory is made for iPhone 17 Pro rather than Pro Max; their display sizes differ.
- Check that your carrier and region support eSIM if you rely on mobile service.
- Choose storage based on how much locally stored video, photography, and other data you expect to keep.
How it differs from iPhone 17 Pro Max
The clearest distinction established by Apple’s specifications is size: iPhone 17 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display. They are separate devices, so fit-specific accessories must match the exact model. Apple’s battery figures for the Pro are up to 33 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of streamed video playback; do not assume the Pro Max shares those numbers. If deciding between them, screen size and how each phone feels in hand are practical considerations. The specifications cited here do not establish independent comparative test results.
