The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the better fit if you want a phone that opens into a tablet-size screen; the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a conventional, lighter-to-carry phone with a longer stated video-playback figure and a 5x telephoto camera. Samsung’s US page lists the Fold8 Ultra from $2,099.99 before trade-in, but the available sources do not establish a current iPhone price, so they cannot support a reliable like-for-like price difference.
iPhone 16 Pro Max vs Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: the key differences
These phones take different approaches to a premium smartphone. Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro Max, a 2024 model, has one 6.9-inch display. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, represented in 2026 product materials, folds between a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8.0-inch inner display. That choice of form factor matters more in everyday use than a direct comparison of screen diagonals alone.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has the biggest screen when opened: its 8.0-inch inner display is larger than the iPhone’s 6.9-inch display. Folded, it has a 6.5-inch cover display. The iPhone offers a single, uninterrupted 6.9-inch screen rather than switching between an outer and inner display.
#1 Best Overall
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Choose the Fold8 Ultra for an expansive workspace
The Fold’s inner screen is the more suitable layout for reading, viewing content or working across a larger canvas. You can use its cover display without opening the phone, then unfold it when you want more screen area. That flexibility comes with a foldable design rather than the simpler one-screen layout of a conventional phone.
Choose the iPhone for a single-screen phone
The iPhone 16 Pro Max keeps the same 6.9-inch display in a conventional form. If you prefer not to open a phone to reach its largest screen, its design is more straightforward. The published specifications do not establish comparative one-handed usability, so hand size and preference remain important.

How do the cameras differ?
The rear camera systems prioritize different telephoto ranges. Apple lists a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera and a 12MP 5x telephoto. Samsung lists a 200MP wide camera, a 50MP ultra-wide camera and a 10MP 3x telephoto.
The higher megapixel counts on Samsung’s wide and ultra-wide cameras do not, by themselves, prove better image quality. The listed telephoto magnification differs too: Apple specifies 5x, while Samsung specifies 3x. The cited specifications do not provide independent, head-to-head image tests, so they cannot determine which phone takes better photos overall.

Apple states up to 33 hours of video playback for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Samsung lists a 5,000mAh typical battery capacity and up to 27 hours of video playback for the Fold8 Ultra. These are each manufacturer’s figures, not a controlled test of both phones under identical conditions. Treat them as separate claims rather than a direct battery-life ranking.

For a fair comparison, check both phones in the same market on the same date, at the same storage capacity, and with the same treatment of promotions and trade-in offers. The models are from different release periods—the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a 2024 model, while Samsung’s cited Fold8 Ultra materials are from 2026—so a current retailer price for the older iPhone may not be comparable to Samsung’s listed starting price.

Best Value
- The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
- Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
- Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
- Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
- Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
Which phone should you choose?
- Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if an 8.0-inch inner screen and the option to switch to a 6.5-inch cover screen matter most.
- Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max if you want a conventional phone with one 6.9-inch display, or if Apple’s listed 5x telephoto better matches your needs.
- Compare the exact storage tier before deciding: both models are listed in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options, and Samsung’s memory configuration varies by storage tier.
- Check current prices locally before judging value; the available US price for Samsung cannot establish a current price gap against the iPhone.
