For most buyers, the standard iPhone 16 is the stronger choice if its price works: it adds Apple Intelligence eligibility, Camera Control, macro photography, Wi-Fi 7 and higher Apple-rated battery and wireless-charging ceilings. The standard iPhone 15 can be the better value when it costs meaningfully less and you do not need those additions. Both have a 6.1-inch OLED display and are compatible with iOS 27, so the decision hinges more on features and the actual offer than on screen size or current software compatibility.
iPhone 15 vs. iPhone 16: the differences that matter
| Feature | iPhone 15 (standard) | iPhone 16 (standard) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chip and Apple Intelligence | A16 Bionic; not eligible for Apple Intelligence on Apple’s current requirements list | A18; eligible for Apple Intelligence | Choose the 16 if Apple Intelligence matters. Availability of individual features varies by language and region. Apple’s requirements list iPhone 16 models and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max—not the standard iPhone 15. |
| Display | 6.1-inch OLED, 2556 × 1179, 460 ppi; Dynamic Island; up to 2,000 nits outdoor peak | 6.1-inch OLED, 2556 × 1179, 460 ppi; Dynamic Island; up to 2,000 nits outdoor peak; 1-nit minimum listed | The core size and resolution match. Display specifications alone are not a strong reason to pick one over the other. |
| Rear cameras and controls | 48MP main and 12MP ultra-wide cameras; 2× optical zoom-in listed | 48MP Fusion main and 12MP ultra-wide cameras; Camera Control and macro photography listed; 2× optical zoom-in listed | The 16 adds camera controls and a listed macro mode. These specifications do not establish that its photos are better in everyday use. |
| Apple-rated video playback | Up to 20 hours of video playback; up to 16 hours of streamed video playback | Up to 22 hours of video playback; up to 18 hours of streamed video playback | Apple’s maximum ratings are two hours higher for each listed video measure on the 16. They are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee of personal battery life. |
| Wireless networking and charging | Wi-Fi 6; MagSafe and Qi2 charging up to 15W | Wi-Fi 7; MagSafe and Qi2 charging up to 25W | The higher wireless-charging ceiling and newer Wi-Fi standard matter only with compatible equipment and network support. |
| Wired connection | USB-C, USB 2 up to 480 Mb/s | USB-C, USB 2 up to 480 Mb/s | The iPhone 16’s newer Wi-Fi does not translate to faster wired file transfers. |
| Current major iOS compatibility | Compatible with iOS 27 | Compatible with iOS 27 | Both appear on Apple’s current compatibility list; that does not promise a particular number of future update years. |
Specifications are from Apple’s iPhone 15 technical specifications and iPhone 16 technical specifications. Current OS compatibility is listed in Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility guide.

Choose the iPhone 16 if its added features matter to you
- You want Apple Intelligence. Apple’s current requirements include iPhone 16 models, while excluding the standard iPhone 15. Language and region availability varies, so check Apple’s Apple Intelligence requirements for the features you expect to use.
- You want Camera Control or macro photography. Apple lists both on the iPhone 16. The iPhone 15 already has a 48MP main camera and 2× optical zoom-in, so this is a difference in controls and listed capability—not evidence of a general photo-quality advantage.
- You value the newer wireless standards and ratings. The 16 lists Wi-Fi 7 and MagSafe/Qi2 charging up to 25W, compared with Wi-Fi 6 and up to 15W on the 15. Your router, charger and usage determine whether those ceilings translate to a practical benefit.
- You expect to keep the phone for a long time. The 16 has the newer A18 chip, but Apple’s compatibility pages do not establish a guaranteed support end date for either phone. Treat newer hardware as a preference, not a promise of a specific number of extra update years.
Choose the iPhone 15 if the offer is clearly better
The standard iPhone 15 remains a capable option for a buyer who does not need Apple Intelligence or the 16’s added camera controls and wireless features. Its 6.1-inch OLED display has the same listed resolution and pixel density as the 16, it includes a 48MP main camera, and Apple lists it as compatible with iOS 27.

How to compare the offers fairly
Before calling one a bargain, compare like with like. A lower sticker price can be offset by less storage, a carrier lock, worn condition, limited warranty or restrictive return terms.
- Match storage. Compare the same capacity so you are not mistaking a storage difference for a model discount.
- Check carrier status. Confirm whether each phone is unlocked or locked to a carrier you can use.
- Review condition and coverage. For used or refurbished phones, check the condition description, warranty and return window before comparing prices.
- Check what is included. Both phones use USB-C. Apple says iPhone 16 fast charging to about 50% in 30 minutes requires a 20W-or-higher adapter with a USB-C cable, or a 30W-or-higher adapter with MagSafe; required accessories are sold separately. Confirm your charging equipment is compatible before treating charging speed as a benefit.
What the battery and charging numbers do—and do not—tell you
Apple rates the iPhone 15 for up to 20 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of streamed video playback; its iPhone 16 specifications list up to 22 hours and up to 18 hours, respectively. These are Apple-published maximum ratings, not independent comparative test results or a forecast of how long a particular user’s phone will last. Actual endurance depends on use.

Wireless charging ratings are also maximums: Apple lists MagSafe and Qi2 up to 15W for the iPhone 15 and up to 25W for the iPhone 16. The faster ceiling is relevant only with compatible charging equipment. For wired transfer, both models list USB-C with USB 2 speeds up to 480 Mb/s.
Verdict
Buy the iPhone 16 if you want Apple Intelligence eligibility, Camera Control, macro photography or newer wireless specifications. Buy the iPhone 15 if you can get it for meaningfully less from a trustworthy seller and are comfortable without those additions. The 15 is not automatically obsolete: Apple lists it as compatible with iOS 27, and its display specifications closely match the 16’s.
