For a basic file migration, download the files and folders from OneDrive or SharePoint, then upload them to Nextcloud. That moves file contents, but the straightforward workflow does not establish that Microsoft sharing permissions, links, version history, or metadata will carry over. Choose the method based on the collection size and the information you need to preserve.
Choose a migration method
| Method | Best suited to | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Browser download and Nextcloud upload | Small or moderate collections | Simple, but subject to Microsoft’s browser-download limits. Multiple selected items and folders download as ZIP files. Microsoft’s instructions describe the process. |
| OneDrive sync app, then upload | Many items in an authorized work or school OneDrive, including another person’s OneDrive | Microsoft recommends syncing when moving lots of items or working across multiple folders in another person’s OneDrive. Confirm the approach and access rights fit your account and library. Microsoft’s guidance covers this scenario. |
| Microsoft Graph plus Nextcloud WebDAV | Custom or automated workflows | Graph can return a file’s primary content stream; WebDAV can create folders and upload files. These are API building blocks, not a turnkey migration product. Graph’s content endpoint and Nextcloud’s WebDAV documentation describe the capabilities. |
Prepare the source and destination
- Inventory the scope. List the OneDrive accounts and SharePoint document libraries, estimate data volume and item counts, and identify shared folders. Confirm you have permission to read every item.
- Check for exceptions. Look for protected files, OneNote notebooks, unusual names, and deeply nested paths. Microsoft’s OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions are a useful preflight reference, not a guarantee that every item will work with a particular Nextcloud server.
- Decide what must transfer. Separate current file contents from requirements such as permissions, sharing links, versions, authorship, timestamps, or other metadata. The browser download and upload instructions do not establish that those Microsoft-specific properties are preserved. Test required fidelity with representative items using the tool you plan to use.
- Check Nextcloud upload access. The administrator may disable upload features. Confirm that uploads are enabled and that you can write to the intended account or shared folder.
- Plan local staging. Browser and sync workflows use local storage. Make sure the computer has room for the files and any ZIP archives; a separate drive is optional if internal storage is insufficient.
Download and upload with a browser
This is the most direct route for a modest collection of file contents. In OneDrive or SharePoint, select the files or folders and choose the download command. Microsoft packages multiple selected items and folders as a ZIP archive. Extract the archive locally, then open Nextcloud’s Files interface and upload the files or folders to the destination.

Microsoft’s documented browser-download limits, on its page updated in 2026, are:
- Maximum file size: 250 GB.
- Maximum of 10,000 files in a download, and a maximum of 10,000 files in a folder download.
- Compressed downloads: 10 GB per ZIP and 20 GB overall in the documented cases.
- In the specified ZIP-download scenarios, files encrypted with sensitivity labels or Information Rights Management (IRM) that exceed 4 MB may be omitted and must be downloaded separately.
These limits describe Microsoft’s documented browser-download behavior, not Graph, OneDrive sync, or every client and tenant. Check Microsoft’s current instructions before starting because service behavior can change. If a download is incomplete, review the archive and any error messages rather than assuming all selected items were included.

Handle OneNote notebooks separately
Microsoft says, “You can’t download OneNote notebooks” through the described browser flow. If a downloaded ZIP contains a notebook, it includes an error-message text file rather than the notebook itself. Treat notebooks as a separate workstream and validate a supported export or conversion route; the documentation cited here does not establish a method for importing them into Nextcloud.
Use OneDrive sync for many items in a work or school account
For lots of items or multiple folders in another person’s work or school OneDrive, Microsoft recommends using the OneDrive sync app and moving the synced files locally. This route is relevant only when you have the necessary authorization; confirm that it applies to the exact account and library involved.
Rank #2
- Set up the OneDrive sync app with the authorized account and sync the relevant files.
- Wait for synchronization to finish. Review sync errors and confirm the local files are present before treating the copy as complete.
- Move or copy the staged files into a location you can upload from, then transfer them through the Nextcloud Files interface.
- Review upload errors and compare the destination against the source inventory.
Automate with Graph and WebDAV
For a custom workflow, Microsoft Graph’s driveItem content endpoint returns a redirect to a preauthenticated URL for downloading the file’s primary content. Nextcloud WebDAV documents file uploads with PUT and folder creation with MKCOL, as well as listing and downloading files and folders.

Resolve names and path problems
Review Microsoft’s restrictions on file names, file types, and paths before transferring. A file may download successfully but fail to upload to the target. If a rename is necessary, use a controlled process:
- Keep a record mapping each original name and path to its new one.
- Check that the new name does not collide with an existing file or another renamed item.
- Record any items that cannot be renamed or transferred so they can be handled separately.
Validate the migration before switching users
Compare the source and destination inventories rather than relying only on a successful upload message. Check item counts, folder structure, file sizes, and whether representative files open correctly. Review failed downloads and uploads, skipped items, renamed paths, and duplicate or conflict cases.
Rank #4
If users depend on Microsoft sharing settings, links, or historical versions, inspect those requirements explicitly with the selected migration tool; the basic download-and-upload route does not demonstrate that they transfer. Keep the Microsoft source available until stakeholders have checked the destination and approved the access model and any required metadata.
