Apple’s display diagonals are stated measurements; the 6.9-inch figure is larger than the 14 Pro Max’s 6.7 inches. The 17 Pro Max is a newer model, but it is not the newest iPhone generation as of October 2026.

What changed between the two Pro Max phones?
A larger display, but familiar Pro features
The 17 Pro Max adds 0.2 inch to the stated diagonal. Both models have Super Retina XDR, ProMotion, and an Always-On display. The 14 Pro Max has a 48MP main camera. The 17 Pro Max’s 48MP Pro Fusion system includes main, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras, and its 18MP Center Stage front camera adds a different feature set from the 14 Pro Max’s 12MP TrueDepth camera. Chip generation and storage ceiling
The 17 Pro Max uses the A19 Pro, compared with the A16 Bionic in the 14 Pro Max. The model names alone do not establish how much faster either phone feels for your particular apps. Storage is a more concrete distinction: the 17 Pro Max starts at 256GB and offers up to 2TB, while the 14 Pro Max began at 128GB and tops out at 1TB.
USB-C replaces Lightning

What is the price difference?
At U.S. launch, the iPhone 14 Pro Max started at $1,099 in 2022, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max started at $1,199 in 2025. That is a $100 increase in launch starting MSRP. For a current comparison, use the same country, storage capacity, device condition, and seller, and check prices on the same date. A new phone and a used or refurbished 14 Pro Max are not directly comparable on price alone. For a used or refurbished device, also weigh battery health, warranty, and return terms. Trade-in values and carrier credits can change and have eligibility conditions; Apple’s 2025 launch announcement described historical offers, not a current deal.

How to decide whether to upgrade
The 17 Pro Max is the more relevant fit if you need
- A 6.9-inch display rather than the 14 Pro Max’s 6.7-inch display.
- The 17 Pro Max’s newer multi-camera configuration, telephoto hardware, or Center Stage front-camera features.
- USB-C, provided it better suits your cable and accessory setup.
- At least 256GB as the starting storage tier, or capacity up to 2TB.
Keeping the 14 Pro Max may suit you if
- Its performance, camera capabilities, display, and storage are meeting your needs.
- You use Lightning accessories and do not want to change your setup.
- The cost of a new phone outweighs the specific hardware differences you would use.
Battery figures need particular care: Apple lists up to 39 hours of video playback and up to 35 hours of streamed video playback for the 17 Pro Max. These are manufacturer maximums, not a direct test against an aging 14 Pro Max. Actual playback varies, and a particular 14 Pro Max’s battery condition depends on its age and use.
