The iPhone 16 builds on the 15 with a newer A18 chip, Camera Control, an Action button, and macro photography. Which one makes sense depends on those features, the exact device’s condition, and its local price—not just its generation number.

What changed from iPhone 14 to iPhone 15?
A more useful main camera
The iPhone 14 has a dual 12MP rear camera system. With the iPhone 15, Apple moved to a 48MP main camera and made 24MP the default photo output. Apple also describes a 2x optical-quality framing option from the dual-camera system. That is a crop-based framing option, not a separate telephoto camera.
Dynamic Island replaces the earlier front design
The iPhone 15 introduces Dynamic Island, the interactive area around the front camera and sensors. The iPhone 14 retains the notch-era design. If you often use activities or alerts that appear in Dynamic Island, this is a visible day-to-day difference; if not, it may matter less than the camera or connector change.

Lightning gives way to USB-C
USB-C on the iPhone 15 can simplify charging if your other devices already use USB-C cables. It does not, by itself, mean fast file transfers: Apple lists the base iPhone 15’s USB 2 data transfer at up to 480 Mb/s. The iPhone 14 uses Lightning, so check cable and adapter compatibility before switching models.
What does iPhone 16 add over iPhone 15?
New physical controls
The iPhone 16 adds Camera Control, a capacitive and pressure-sensitive control that can launch the camera and adjust options such as zoom, exposure, and depth of field. It also adds the Action button, which can be configured for supported actions. These are the clearest reasons to favor the 16 if you want more direct camera access or customizable hardware controls.

Macro-capable Ultra Wide camera
Apple describes the iPhone 16 camera as a 48MP Fusion system with a 2x optical-quality option. Its autofocus Ultra Wide camera supports macro photography, letting you focus on close-up subjects in a way the listed iPhone 15 camera features do not. The iPhone 15’s 2x option remains optical-quality framing from its dual-camera system, not a dedicated telephoto lens.

A newer chip, with no benchmark claim implied
The iPhone 16 uses A18, compared with A16 Bionic in iPhone 15 and A15 Bionic in iPhone 14. That establishes the generational chip change, but it does not establish a specific real-world speed difference for a particular task. No controlled head-to-head performance measurement is cited here.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose iPhone 14 if it is meaningfully less expensive in your market and you are comfortable with Lightning, the notch-era design, and a dual 12MP camera system. It remains a reasonable way to get the core iPhone experience, but used-device battery health and condition can change the value substantially.
- Choose iPhone 15 if you want the strongest balance of meaningful updates: Dynamic Island, a higher-resolution main camera, and USB-C. It is the clearest upgrade over the 14 for people who care about those changes.
- Choose iPhone 16 if you specifically want Camera Control, the Action button, macro photography, or the A18 generation. Its value over the 15 depends on whether those additions justify the local price difference.
There is no universal current price or availability comparison for these models. Compare the same storage capacity, seller, warranty, and new or refurbished condition in your market. For a used phone, check battery health and physical condition rather than assuming that a newer model is automatically the better buy.
Apple Intelligence: check the exact feature and region
Apple described iPhone 16 as built for Apple Intelligence, but access is not a blanket promise for every feature, language, or region. Apple’s current iOS 26 feature availability document lists eligibility by feature and includes device, language, and regional qualifications. Do not assume the base iPhone 15 qualifies simply because some iPhone 15-family models do; check the exact model and feature you intend to use against Apple’s current listing.

Battery and charging: what Apple’s figures do—and don’t—say
Apple lists up to 20 hours of video playback for both iPhone 14 and iPhone 15. These are manufacturer maximums under specified test conditions, not a head-to-head real-world battery test or a promise of equal runtime in everyday use. Battery condition, especially on a used device, also affects the result. The cited specifications do not establish a comparative real-world endurance result for all three phones.
For iPhone 14, Apple describes fast charging with a 20W-or-higher adapter and a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 use USB-C. Confirm the cable ends and adapter you need for the specific phone and charger you already own.
