Choose an iPad Air (M4) if you want more room for reading, handwriting, drawing, multitasking, or typing: Apple sells it in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. The key trade-off is portability versus screen area, not a proven speed advantage for every user.
Current iPad mini and iPad Air models compared
Apple’s current lineup includes the iPad mini (A17 Pro) and 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models with M4. These are Apple’s headline screen sizes; the usable display area is smaller than the rounded-corner diagonal measurement.

Which is better for portability and reading?
Choose the mini for carrying and one-handed use
At 293 g for the Wi-Fi model, the mini is the lightest of these choices, and its 8.3-inch display takes up less space in a bag. That makes it the clearest fit for people who want a tablet close at hand for travel, quick reading, or casual use while moving around.

The smaller display is a genuine compromise. If you prefer larger text, want a more expansive page view, or expect to spend long stretches reading documents, compare the screen in person if possible; portability does not guarantee that the mini’s size will feel comfortable to you.
Choose an Air when screen space matters more
The 11-inch Air is a middle ground: it adds screen area while weighing 171 g more than the Wi-Fi mini. The 13-inch Air offers the largest canvas, but at 616 g it is also the heaviest option here. Apple lists P3 wide color and True Tone on all three displays; the 13-inch Air is rated at 600 nits, while the mini and 11-inch Air are rated at 500 nits.

Which is better for handwriting, drawing, or typing?
Handwriting and drawing
Both current product families support Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), according to Apple’s technical specifications. The practical distinction is the canvas: the Air gives notes, sketches, and documents more room, while the mini is easier to take along. Pick by the space you want to work in rather than assuming stylus compatibility makes one model the better choice.

The Air’s larger display may be more comfortable for extended typing and for keeping more content visible while you work. The 13-inch model offers the most space; the 11-inch version reduces the size and weight trade-off. Before buying a keyboard, verify that it matches the exact Air size and generation. The specifications cited here do not establish compatibility for any particular keyboard accessory.

Do the chips make the Air a better buy?
The mini uses Apple’s A17 Pro; the Air uses M4. Apple lists the Air with an 8-core CPU, 9-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, and 12 GB unified memory, while the mini has a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. Those are published hardware specifications, not benchmark results. They show a difference in hardware, but do not establish a real-world speed ratio or mean every buyer needs the Air.
If your choice is mainly about everyday reading, portability, note-taking, or the amount of workspace you want, decide on size first. The chip names alone do not settle which tablet offers better value for your particular use.

Battery estimates
Apple estimates up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web surfing or video playback for both product families. This is the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not an independent test or a guarantee of identical battery life in day-to-day use. Apple lists up to 9 hours of cellular web surfing for the mini.
