Choose an iPad mini storage size by checking how much space your apps, app data, photos, videos, downloads, and offline files use now—and how that is likely to change while you own it. The current iPad mini (A17 Pro) comes in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations. No one capacity is right for everyone.
Compare the iPad mini storage options
Apple introduced the iPad mini (A17 Pro) in 2024 and lists three capacities. The practical descriptions below are decision-making heuristics, not Apple recommendations or measured user categories.

At those listed US starting prices, moving from 128GB to 256GB costs $100 more, while moving from 256GB to 512GB costs $200 more. Compare the actual price difference at checkout with the value of keeping additional content locally; extra capacity is useful only if you expect to use it.

Check how much storage you use
If you already use an iPad, its storage screen is a better starting point than a generic rule about who needs each tier.
- Open Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Review the available space, recommendations, and app usage shown there.
- Inspect large apps and their documents or data, photos and videos, downloaded entertainment, and files kept locally in Files or other apps.
- Consider whether those categories are likely to grow during the period you expect to keep the iPad.
Apple explains the storage view and ways to manage usage in its iPad and iPhone storage guide. Cached and temporary data may not be counted as fixed usage, and iPadOS may remove some temporary or redownloadable items when space is low. That cleanup is not a good substitute for enough capacity if you routinely keep a large library available offline.

Account for offline use and future growth
Downloads take up space on the iPad even when the same content is synced elsewhere or can be downloaded again. Count the movies, books, maps, music, and work files you expect to have available without a connection. Then consider whether you will add more apps, capture more photos or video, or keep larger project files over time.
There is no universally supported number of gigabytes to reserve as a future-proofing buffer. Base the choice on your current usage, likely changes, and the amount of local content you want on hand, rather than assuming a fixed spare-space rule.

iCloud and external storage do not increase built-in capacity
iCloud storage
Device storage is the fixed space in the iPad; iCloud storage is separate and can hold supported backups, photos, files, and synced data. Apple defines device storage as “the storage on your Apple device, such as your iPhone or iPad.” iCloud features can help manage what stays local, but they do not turn a 128GB iPad mini into a higher-capacity model. Apps, content needed offline, and data retained on the device still use its built-in space. See Apple’s explanation of iCloud and device storage.
External drives
Apple supports connecting storage devices and transferring files through compatible workflows and apps, including Files or Pages; depending on the iPad and drive, you may need a cable adapter. An external drive can help move or archive large files, but it is an accessory, not an expansion of internal storage. Check connection type, power needs, format, and app compatibility for your particular workflow. Apple’s file-transfer instructions describe the supported process.
