For a larger mobile workspace, the iPad mini is the better choice if you want a dedicated tablet, Apple Pencil support, and documented iPad windowing tools. A book-style foldable phone is better if you want one device that works as a phone when closed and opens into a larger screen. The iPad mini’s 8.3-inch display and foldables’ roughly 8-inch inner displays sound close in size, but diagonal measurements do not tell you how much usable space an app provides. Screen shape, app layout, input, and whether you are willing to carry a separate tablet matter more.
What are you choosing between?
The current iPad mini is Apple’s A17 Pro model: a compact tablet with an 8.3-inch display. A book-style foldable is a phone with a smaller outer screen and a larger inner screen that unfolds for tasks such as reading, viewing, and multitasking.

For concrete examples, Google lists the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with a 6.4-inch outer display and an 8-inch inner display. Samsung’s 2025 Q4 interim report search excerpt lists the Galaxy Z Fold7’s main screen as 8.0 inches; that figure is less firmly verified than Google’s published specifications. These are different devices and platforms, not a controlled comparison of usable work area.

These published weights and diagonal measurements are specifications, not evidence that one device is more comfortable to hold or offers more usable workspace. Display proportions, safe areas, the foldable’s hinge crease, software, and app behavior all affect what fits on screen.

Which screen layout gives you more useful workspace?
iPad mini: a conventional tablet canvas
The iPad mini presents a single, broad tablet display. That format is a natural fit for apps designed for tablet layouts and for working with two or more windows side by side. Apple lists the A17 Pro model’s resolution as 2266 × 1488 at 326 ppi.
Foldable phone: a larger screen when opened
A book-style foldable expands from its outer phone screen to an inner display. The inner screen can give an app more room than the closed phone display, but its shape differs from the iPad mini’s. An app may use that area differently, and the hinge crease and app-specific layout affect the experience. Check your own essential apps on the specific foldable model before deciding that its nominal screen size will suit your work.

Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature document describes resizing and positioning app windows, tiling windows, and organizing windows into stages with Stage Manager. Apple says, “You can even split your display into thirds or quarters to work across even more apps at once.” That is Apple’s feature description, not independent usability testing; how useful it is depends on the apps and layout you need.

Foldable multitasking depends on the model and software
Foldables can offer a larger canvas when open, but their multitasking behavior is model- and software-specific. Do not assume every Android foldable supports the same window controls or arranges apps in the same way. Check the exact model and the apps you intend to use.
Does stylus input matter to your work?
The A17 Pro iPad mini supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), according to Apple’s specifications. That makes the iPad mini the clearer fit of these options if handwriting, sketching, or annotating documents is central to your workflow. A Pencil is optional rather than necessary for general browsing or media use.

Can a foldable replace an iPad mini?
It can replace the need to carry a separate tablet for someone whose main priority is combining phone and larger-screen use in one device. Closed, a foldable remains a phone; opened, it provides a larger display. The trade-off is that the inner screen and multitasking experience depend on the particular model and its software.

Which should you choose?
- Choose the iPad mini if you want a dedicated tablet, plan to write or draw with Apple Pencil, or value Apple’s documented iPadOS windowing and tiling controls.
- Choose a book-style foldable phone if consolidating your phone and larger-screen device matters most and you are willing to assess the specific model’s apps and multitasking features.
- Check your workflow first if workspace is the deciding factor: open your essential apps, try the layouts you expect to use, and consider whether their content fits comfortably on the device’s screen.
- Consider a larger tablet as well if you mainly want more viewing space and do not need to combine that screen with a phone. That is a separate comparison from choosing between the iPad mini and a foldable.
