What can an open-source tricorder actually detect? Only what its installed sensors can measure under the conditions they were designed for. A temperature sensor can report temperature; a gas sensor can register a response to gases. Neither reading, by itself, proves what caused it, identifies every substance, or diagnoses a medical condition.
“Tricorder” describes a range of projects, not a standard instrument. Their capabilities depend on the sensors, hardware, software, and validation of each particular build.
What does “detect” mean for a tricorder?
A sensor measures a physical quantity or produces a signal that software may display or process. Interpreting that signal is a separate step: it can require calibration, controlled sampling, reference data, and testing. A sensor list therefore describes possible measurements, not proof that a device can reliably identify an arbitrary material or hazard.
Open-source projects also differ in where sensing happens and what their software reports. Some collect measurements in a handheld unit; another presents information from sensors distributed around a space. The word “tricorder” alone does not establish a shared feature set, accuracy, or intended use.

What can the Science Tricorder Mark 2 measure?
The Science Tricorder Mark 2 project describes ten sensing modalities grouped as atmospheric, electromagnetic, and spatial. Its named components include:
- An SHT11 sensor for air temperature and humidity, plus a pressure sensor.
- A three-axis magnetometer, color and light sensors, and a non-contact infrared thermometer.
- GPS, ultrasonic distance sensing, and an inertial measurement unit.
The project also describes a cellphone-camera imaging sensor, but says it was untested; it should not be treated as a demonstrated detection capability. Component ranges and accuracy figures on the project page apply to the specified components and design, not to tricorders generally or to independent validation of the complete instrument.

Its architecture separates a Linux-capable main processor and display from a microcontroller on the sensor board. That design can present and process sensor data, but it does not by itself establish that the prototype is a calibrated field instrument. The project page describes hardware as under a TAPR non-commercial license and software under GPL v3; anyone planning to reuse it should consult the linked license materials for the applicable terms.

That list indicates a broad set of possible signal types, not equal performance across every modality. A radiation detector registers radiation; a micro-spectrometer measures an optical signal. The project description does not establish that these sensors identify every radiation source, gas, material, or hazard. Nor does the presence of a thermal camera or microphone mean the device can infer a medical condition.
IEEE Spectrum describes the Arducorder Mini as a “pure sensing tool” and says it is not intended to perform diagnostics (IEEE Spectrum’s report). Collecting sensor readings is different from producing a diagnosis supported by clinical validation.

Can a tricorder use sensors outside the handheld device?
Yes. MIT Media Lab’s Tricorder Net is a handheld interface to a network of sensors distributed through the environment. The interface queries that network; its sensing capability does not come from putting all the sensors inside the handheld unit. This is a different architecture from a self-contained sensor platform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are open-source tricorders medical diagnostic devices?
The projects described here do not establish that they can diagnose disease. A sensor signal, including a gas reading or temperature measurement, is not a clinical conclusion. A medical system needs its own purpose-built analysis and validation; an open hardware design or a medically suggestive name does not supply those on its own.

A NASA-hosted technical record describes a separate medical research effort involving an electronic nose for gas-phase breath biomarkers and a microfluidic analyzer for biomarkers in small liquid samples, including blood, saliva, and breath condensate (NASA Technical Reports Server record). That research system is not evidence that a hobbyist tricorder can diagnose disease.
The Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE was a historical competition, not a certification for open-source sensor projects. XPRIZE identifies it as a $10 million competition that concluded in 2017 and reports DxtER as the winner (XPRIZE competition page). A competition result should not be confused with validation of unrelated devices.
What is OpenCT, and why is it different?
OpenCT is an open desktop CT project for academic and educational purposes, not a handheld environmental scanner or an at-home medical imaging device. Its project documentation describes use with low-intensity radioactive check sources rather than commercial or medical imaging sources and warns that even very low-resolution scans may require hours of measurement and integration.
Construction and use involve hazards. The project says users should be experienced with the relevant tools and radioactive sources and states: “In no case should any living thing be placed inside of or be scanned by the device.” It is not appropriate to adapt or use this system for medical imaging.
How to judge what a project can detect
When evaluating a tricorder project, check the specific claims rather than relying on the name or the length of its sensor list:
Quick Recap
- What is measured? Look for a defined quantity or signal, such as temperature, pressure, light, magnetic field, radiation, distance, motion, or a biological sample signal.
- Where is the sensor? It may be embedded in the handheld unit, installed on a swappable board, or located in an external sensor network.
- What does the software output? Distinguish a raw measurement or visualization from an inference about a source, material, hazard, or health condition.
- What validation and use context are documented? An educational prototype, environmental monitor, and clinical research system have different purposes and evidence requirements.
- What safety limits apply? Pay particular attention to radiation sources, sample handling, and other specialized hardware; follow the project’s stated restrictions.
