Choose the iPad mini (A17 Pro)—often called the seventh-generation iPad mini—if you want a color-capable tablet for reading as well as other tasks, or value Apple Pencil support.
At a glance: book reader or versatile tablet?
The iPad mini (A17 Pro) is a small general-purpose tablet. The Kindle Paperwhite is designed for reading. That difference matters more than a simple screen-size comparison: the iPad can handle varied tablet tasks and color content, while the Paperwhite focuses on book-reading features and longer advertised time between charges.

Which screen suits reading?
Paperwhite: reading-focused features
Amazon lists adjustable warm light and dark mode for the 12th-generation Paperwhite and describes its Kindle displays as glare-free E Ink. Those features are relevant if you want a device centered on books rather than a multipurpose screen. The cited model guide does not confirm this Paperwhite’s exact display size or pixel density, so a precise screen-size or sharpness comparison is not established here.

iPad mini: color and tablet flexibility
Apple specifies an 8.3-inch color Liquid Retina IPS display, 2266 × 1488 resolution, 326 pixels per inch, and 500-nit maximum brightness for the iPad mini (A17 Pro). Color makes it the more flexible choice for material such as illustrated books or other content where color matters. It also supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C).
Neither display specification proves that one device is more comfortable for every reader. Lighting, font size, content, settings, and personal preference all affect the experience; the cited manufacturer sources do not establish comparative clinical or controlled reading-comfort results.

Battery life: what the advertised figures mean
Apple rates the iPad mini (A17 Pro) for up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback. Amazon advertises up to 12 weeks for the Paperwhite, with actual battery life depending on use. These are different manufacturer claims with different descriptions, not results from a shared reading test, so they do not establish an exact number of reading hours or a measured head-to-head advantage.
Water resistance and everyday handling
Amazon lists the Paperwhite as IPX8 water resistant. It also cautions that the device is not intended for underwater use and that dropping or otherwise damaging it can compromise water protection. Treat the rating as a protection feature, not a reason to submerge the reader. The cited Apple specifications do not establish an equivalent water-resistance rating for the iPad mini.

Price and model names to check
“Kindle” is a product family, and features vary by model. This comparison is specifically with the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 release), not every Kindle. Amazon’s guide lists a Signature Edition as well, with wireless charging and 32 GB storage; the standard Paperwhite listing specifies 16 GB, of which about 11.5 GB is available to the user.
Apple calls its 2024 tablet the iPad mini (A17 Pro); “iPad mini 7” is a common shorthand for the seventh-generation model. Apple announced a US starting price of $499 for the 128 GB model on October 15, 2024. That historical launch price is not a current retail quote, and current regional prices for either device are not established here.
