RE ENGINE is Capcom’s in-house game development engine: the shared technology and workflow used to create games, not a standalone product or a graphics feature. Capcom developed it alongside Resident Evil 7 biohazard, released in 2017, and has since adapted it for different games and platforms. That means RE ENGINE games can share a development foundation without all using identical features or looking the same.
What is the RE Engine?
An engine is a set of tools and technologies developers use to build and run a game. It covers much more than rendering graphics: Capcom describes RE ENGINE as a multi-platform foundation for game production, where teams can work with assets such as characters and backgrounds, render scenes, edit content, playtest builds, and perform quality-control work.

Capcom also says assets can be shared between titles. This can give teams a common starting point for production, while leaving them free to modify or create what a particular game needs. “RE” stands for “Reach for the Moon,” reflecting Capcom’s stated ambition to use the engine to reach for what might seem impossible. Capcom’s 2025 integrated report describes the engine and its production role.
Why Capcom made it for Resident Evil 7
RE ENGINE was created at the same time as Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the first game to use it. Capcom’s account ties that decision to the team’s goal of making a realistic world and a particular kind of horror experience. Director Koshi Nakanishi explained: “We decided the only way to make the game with the highest quality possible was to make our own engine for it that was dedicated to making this amazing experience.” The quotation comes from Capcom’s interview about the development of Resident Evil 7.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
In a 2016 development interview, Capcom described the engine as proprietary and optimized for VR development in the context of Resident Evil 7. That is a historical, game-specific detail—not evidence that every later RE ENGINE title is built around VR. Capcom’s description has since broadened to a platform for multiple genres and production needs. The 2016 interview also attributed to lead programmer Tomofumi Ishida a 90% reduction in the time needed to test program changes. That figure refers to the development context discussed in the interview, not a current benchmark for all RE ENGINE teams or games.
Which Resident Evil games use RE ENGINE?
Capcom’s published examples include the debut game and later titles, but the cited material does not establish a complete title-by-title list.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

| Game | What Capcom’s material documents | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 7 biohazard (2017) | The first RE ENGINE title; developed alongside the engine, with VR optimization discussed in a 2016 interview. | First-use and development-context details; not a description of every later title. |
| Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) | Discussed as an RE ENGINE example in Capcom’s 2022 report. | A documented example, not a complete list. |
| Resident Evil Village | Discussed as an RE ENGINE example in Capcom’s 2022 report. | A documented example, not a complete list. |
| Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 (new-generation versions announced in 2022) | Capcom identified these three titles in its announcement of new-generation versions. | The announcement identifies these versions; it should not be read as a full engine-title catalogue. |
Capcom’s 2022 report covers the first three examples, while its 2022 announcement names the three new-generation versions. Together they show RE ENGINE’s use across different Resident Evil releases, but they do not justify assuming that every game in the series uses it.

It brings production work into a shared environment
Capcom describes asset-based work in which creators manage and modify components such as characters and backgrounds. The engine also supports rendering, editing, playtesting, and quality control. Those functions make it a production environment as well as the technology that helps display a finished game.

- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
It can be adapted to a specific title
Capcom says the engine is updated in collaboration with individual game teams, and that functions can be modularized or adapted by title. In practice, “uses RE ENGINE” identifies a shared foundation, not a promise that two games expose the same tools, use the same rendering options, or produce identical visual results.
It supports different lighting and visual techniques
Capcom’s 2025 report says the engine supports multiple lighting methods, including light probes, ray tracing, and path tracing; which method is used depends on the game and its hardware. The report describes path tracing in Resident Evil Requiem as a way to depict complex indirect light, reflections, and refraction, while noting that it requires substantially more computation than ray tracing. It also describes “strand hair,” where hair is treated as individual strands that respond to character movement and expression. These are examples of technology and implementation, not features guaranteed in every RE ENGINE game or on every platform. Capcom’s 2025 report provides the descriptions.

The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.

What RE ENGINE does not tell you
- It does not mean every game has the same feature set. Capcom says teams adapt the engine for individual titles.
- It does not establish performance on a particular platform. The engine description alone is not a game-specific benchmark; performance depends on the game and hardware.
- It is not a consumer graphics product. Capcom describes it as an in-house development engine, not software players can buy or use to make a game.
How big is the Resident Evil series?
In a 2022 report, Capcom executive Jun Takeuchi cited 127 million Resident Evil series units sold as of June 30, 2022. That is a historical total with a stated cutoff date, not a current sales figure. Capcom’s 2022 report gives the figure and date.
