Choose iPad Air if you value touch, handwritten notes, drawing, and the option to use it as a tablet. Neither is the better choice for everyone: the deciding factors are your apps and input habits, plus the full cost after accessories.
How the two devices differ
MacBook Neo is a laptop; iPad Air is a tablet that can be paired with a keyboard. That difference shapes how each fits into a day of classes, office work, or travel. A larger iPad screen does not turn it into a laptop-style operating environment, while the Neo’s built-in laptop input is ready for sustained typing without buying an accessory.

The current comparison is between the 2026 iPad Air with M4 and the 2026 MacBook Neo. Apple offers iPad Air in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes; the specific weight and technical specifications below for the Air are for the 11-inch Wi-Fi model unless noted.
Which is better for work and college?
Choose MacBook Neo for long typing sessions and laptop workflows
For essays, reports, email, spreadsheets, and other work that involves extended typing, the Neo is the more straightforward fit: it has a built-in keyboard and trackpad. It is also the safer choice when your routine depends on desktop-style laptop workflows. Before buying, check that the applications and services you need are available and work the way you expect on its operating system.

Choose iPad Air for touch, handwriting, and flexible input
iPad Air suits classes and work built around reading, annotating documents by hand, drawing, or switching between touch and keyboard use. It supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), so handwriting and drawing are possible without making a keyboard the center of the experience. Pencil is optional, but it adds to the total cost.
Check your required apps before choosing
List the applications and workflows you rely on, then confirm they support the tasks you need on the device you are considering. Pay particular attention to any desktop-specific features, file handling, or peripherals required by your school or workplace. The right choice depends on those requirements, not just the device category.

Which is easier to carry and use on the move?
Apple lists the 11-inch Wi-Fi iPad Air at 464 g (1.02 lb). Its compact tablet form and touch input make it a strong option if low carry weight and handwritten interaction matter. Apple offers a 13-inch Air as well; the larger display can give documents and creative work more room, but the cited 464 g specification applies to the 11-inch Wi-Fi model, not the 13-inch model.
MacBook Neo has a 13-inch display and built-in laptop input, which means you can type without packing a separate keyboard. That can be useful when you need a conventional laptop setup while travelling. Consider your complete carry kit: an iPad keyboard, Pencil, protective case, or a Neo hub can add items to bring along.

What are the display, memory, and storage differences?
| Device | Display and memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Air (M4), 11-inch Wi-Fi | 11-inch Liquid Retina display; 2360 × 1640 resolution, 264 ppi, P3 wide color, True Tone, antireflective coating, and 500 nits brightness. Apple lists 12 GB unified memory. | 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB |
| MacBook Neo | 13-inch display; 2408 × 1506 resolution and 500 nits brightness. Apple lists an A18 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 8 GB unified memory. | 256 GB or 512 GB SSD |
These specifications describe different device types, so memory and storage figures alone do not establish which one will perform better for your work. Choose storage based on the files, apps, and offline material you expect to keep on the device; the entry configurations do not offer the same amount.
What ports and external-display support do you need?
MacBook Neo has two USB-C ports with different data speeds: one USB 3 port rated up to 10 Gb/s and one USB 2 port rated up to 480 Mb/s. It also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack and supports one external display up to native 4K at 60 Hz while its built-in display is in use. If your regular setup includes multiple accessories or external storage, check whether you will need a hub.

For iPad Air, consider whether your work is comfortable on the tablet itself or depends on a particular external-display and accessory setup. Confirm that the connections and display arrangement you need are supported before relying on it as your main work device.

Apple estimates MacBook Neo battery life at up to 16 hours of video streaming or up to 11 hours of wireless web use. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes for every workload. Apple describes iPad Air battery life as all-day but does not provide a directly comparable figure in the cited announcement. The published claims are not a controlled, side-by-side battery test, so they do not establish which device lasts longer in your specific routine.
How much does each cost after accessories?
Apple’s March 2026 iPad Air announcement gives US starting prices of $599 for the 11-inch model and $799 for the 13-inch model. Apple’s India newsroom lists MacBook Neo starting at $599. These figures are market-specific starting prices, not equivalent configurations: storage differs, and adding a keyboard or Pencil to an iPad Air changes its total. Local prices, taxes, promotions, and configurations can differ, so check current pricing where you plan to buy.
- For iPad Air: include any keyboard, Apple Pencil if you need handwriting or drawing, and the storage tier that fits your work.
- For MacBook Neo: account for its chosen storage and any hub needed for your accessories or external storage.
Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro as compatible with the current iPad Air. It is an optional accessory, not a requirement for using the tablet.
Quick Recap
Which one should you buy?
- Pick MacBook Neo if sustained typing, a built-in keyboard and trackpad, or laptop-style work is central to your day.
- Pick iPad Air if touch input, handwriting, drawing, and tablet portability matter more, and your required apps work for you on iPad.
- Compare the full setup if price or travel weight is decisive: account for the accessories you will actually carry or use, rather than comparing only entry prices.
