An oxcart is the straightforward choice when you want to travel between towns without using a Ferrystone. Capcom calls oxcarts “a relatively safe means of traveling between towns,” while also warning that raids and monster attacks are not unheard of. The trip is therefore not guaranteed to be uninterrupted.
When Ferrystone travel makes sense
Use a Ferrystone when you want to reach a Portcrystal and can activate the item from your current location. The official store description says, “Use a Ferrystone to instantly transport your party to the Portcrystal’s location.” It does not provide a full map of destinations or confirm every current-version travel rule.

What does a Portcrystal do?
A Portcrystal is a warp-location marker: it supplies a destination for Ferrystone travel. The PlayStation Store listing describes the Portcrystal add-on as a “Warp Location Marker” and states that the listed item is obtainable in-game. Buying that add-on is not presented as a requirement for using the travel system.
The store description supports the basic Ferrystone-to-Portcrystal relationship, but not a complete list of permanent travel points or a comprehensive account of where Portcrystals can be placed. Avoid assuming that every town or location is a valid destination.

Why can’t I use my Ferrystone?
Ferrystones cannot be activated everywhere. Capcom Support gives being under a roof as an example of a restricted location and notes that the item may appear greyed out and unavailable.
