In iOS 27, you use Visual Intelligence in the Camera app by switching the camera into Siri mode: open Camera, tap Siri, point the iPhone at what you want to understand, and choose an action or ask a question. Siri mode is part of Siri AI, which is in beta, requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, and is limited by language and region. Visual Intelligence itself is broader than Siri mode, and Apple documents several other ways to open it, so you do not need Camera Control to get started.
How do I use Visual Intelligence in the Camera app?
Apple’s Camera-mode instructions, published in its Support guide “Siri AI: Use Siri mode in Camera on iPhone,” follow four steps. Your screen may differ slightly depending on whether your model has Camera Control.

- Open the Camera. On supported models, click and hold Camera Control. If your iPhone does not have Camera Control, or you prefer another route, use one of the alternate activation options described in the section below.
- Tap Siri to switch the camera into Siri mode.
- Point the camera at the subject: a storefront, a text label, a plant, an animal, a piece of paper, or any object you want information about.
- Choose how you want to proceed, as described below.
What the options on screen do
- Tap an offered action. Siri mode may suggest an action based on what the camera sees. Which actions appear depends on the scene, so the same subject will not always produce the same buttons.
- Tap the Siri button for quick information. This gives a short answer about the subject without you typing or speaking a full question.
- Tap Ask to enter a specific question. Use this when the quick answer is not enough, for example to ask what a dish contains or whether a product works with a particular accessory.
- Tap Search to find similar images. Siri mode searches for visually similar pictures, which is useful for finding where to buy a item or identifying a style.
- Swipe down on an answer to ask a follow-up question. You do not need to start over with a new scan.
Do I need Camera Control to use Visual Intelligence?
No. Camera Control is one of several ways to start Visual Intelligence, and Apple lists it only as an option on supported models. Apple’s separate Visual Intelligence guide, “Learn about what’s around you with Visual Intelligence on iPhone,” names five launch routes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Launch route | Where you start it | Hardware requirement | Siri AI requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera (Siri mode) | Camera app, then tap Siri | Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone (see list below) | Yes. Siri AI must be enabled. |
| Camera Control | Click and hold Camera Control | Only on models with Camera Control | Not separately stated in Apple’s guide |
| Action button | Action button, set to Visual Intelligence | Only on models with an Action button | Not separately stated in Apple’s guide |
| Lock Screen | Lock Screen control | Not stated | Not separately stated in Apple’s guide |
| Control Center | Control Center control | Not stated | Not separately stated in Apple’s guide |
The distinction matters. Only the Camera route is described as requiring Siri AI. If you cannot use Siri mode, the other routes may still open Visual Intelligence features, but Apple’s guide does not spell out which of those features are available on your device, language, or region. Treat that as something to confirm on your own iPhone.

Which iPhones support Siri mode in Camera?
Apple’s iOS 27 support guide lists three families as eligible for Apple Intelligence and therefore for Siri mode:
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 and later models
Apple’s September 14, 2026 Newsroom announcement, “Major updates for Apple’s software platforms are now available,” says the same devices are eligible, provided Apple Intelligence is turned on and the iPhone is set to a supported language. Devices that are not on that list, including the standard iPhone 15 and earlier models, are not listed as eligible for Siri mode.

Language and region limits
- Language. Siri AI began its beta in English. Apple said in the September 14, 2026 announcement that French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish would follow in October. Check Apple’s current availability page to see whether your language is live, because October has only just begun.
- European Union. Apple says Siri AI is initially unavailable on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS in the EU.
- China. Apple says Apple Intelligence and Siri AI are not available in China while regulatory requirements are addressed.
- Daily limits. Apple says server-side features, including Siri AI, may have daily limits that vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, and other factors. Apple does not publish a fixed number of requests per day, so you may see a limit without a specific count.
What can Visual Intelligence do when I point my camera at something?
Apple’s Visual Intelligence guide describes these capabilities, and Apple’s Newsroom summary of Siri mode says it lets you “get information and take action on what’s in front of” you. Not every capability appears in every scene or in every language or region.

- Look up businesses and places to see place information.
- Identify plants and animals.
- Translate or summarize text in view, and interact with text the camera has captured.
- Create a calendar event from information the camera sees, such as a printed event notice.
- Ask ChatGPT about what you are looking at, when the ChatGPT extension is enabled.
One action Apple describes is region-specific. The bill-splitting example in Apple’s Newsroom announcement, which uses Apple Cash, is available only in the U.S. on eligible iPhone and iPad devices. Do not assume it works elsewhere.

Why don’t I see Siri mode in Camera?
Work through these checks in order. They match the requirements Apple documents, but Apple does not present them as a complete troubleshooting list, so other causes are possible.
- Model. Confirm you have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 or later. Other models are not listed as eligible.
- Software. Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 27.
- Apple Intelligence. Confirm Apple Intelligence is turned on.
- Language. Confirm your iPhone is set to a language where Siri AI is currently available.
- Region. Confirm you are not in the EU or China, where Apple says Siri AI is unavailable or not offered.
- Daily limit. If Siri mode appeared earlier and has stopped responding, you may have reached a server-side limit. Try again later.
If every item above checks out and Siri mode still does not appear, your iPhone may be waiting on a rollout, a beta condition, or a service-side change that Apple has not described. Check Apple’s current Siri AI availability information before assuming a fault with your device.
