Menu names and layouts change with the model, carrier and software version, so the labels on your phone may differ slightly from these.
Before you register a fingerprint
- A secure screen lock. Fingerprint unlock is set up on top of a PIN, password or pattern. If none is configured, Samsung says the phone may prompt you to create one during setup.
- A clean, dry finger and sensor. Samsung’s US support guidance advises making sure “the scanner and your fingertip are clean and dry before scanning.”
- To know where your sensor is. The sensor may sit under the display, on the side button, or on the home key of older models. The section on sensor location below explains how to tell.
Register a fingerprint, step by step
- Open Settings and select Security and privacy.
- Select Lock screen, then Fingerprints. On some models and software versions the route or the intermediate labels are different.
- Enter your secure screen-lock PIN, password or pattern when prompted.
- Choose Continue or Add fingerprint and follow the prompts. Cover the full sensor during registration. On devices running Android 16 with One UI 8, Samsung describes a swipe-style method instead: gently swipe the finger across the sensor in different patterns and directions, rather than repeatedly pressing in one spot.
- When registration finishes, check that Fingerprint unlock is switched on.
The swipe-style instructions are described in Samsung US Support’s guide “Use the fingerprint sensor on your Galaxy phone or tablet.” Older One UI versions may still use the press-and-hold method shown on screen, so follow the prompts your phone displays.

In-display sensor
The scanner sits beneath the screen. You place the finger on the lit or marked area of the display, not on a button. Protective film can affect this type of sensor, which is covered in the troubleshooting section.

Side-mounted sensor
On some models the sensor is built into the Power or Side button. Do not touch the screen to unlock these phones. Wake the screen with the button, then rest the enrolled finger on the same button.
Home key sensor
Some older models place the sensor on the physical home key. Press the key with the enrolled finger to unlock.

Unlock your phone with a fingerprint
Wake the screen by pressing the Power or Side button, or by lifting the phone where that option is enabled. Then place the enrolled finger on the sensor. Placement differs by model, so if the phone does not respond, try the sensor location described above before assuming the fingerprint has failed.
Manage the fingerprints you have saved
Samsung says you can register up to four fingerprints. From the same Fingerprints screen you can test registered prints and remove individual ones. If you remove every stored fingerprint, Fingerprint unlock turns off by default.

When a PIN, password or pattern is required
Your secure screen lock stays in place as the fallback. Samsung says it must be entered after the phone restarts, or after the device has not been used for more than 24 hours. Keep it memorised; a fingerprint alone will not get you past those points.
When biometrics are restricted
If Lockdown mode is on, or your phone is managed by an employer or school through a company device policy, fingerprint unlock may be disabled. In that case use the alternative screen lock. If a managed-device restriction is the cause, your IT administrator is the person who can change it.

When recognition fails
Work through these checks in order. Most problems are resolved by the first two.

- Cover the whole sensor. A partial touch is a common cause of failed reads.
- Hold the phone the way you did during enrolment. Changing your grip changes the angle of the finger.
- Clean the sensor and your finger, and dry both. Oil, sweat, lotion and moisture all interfere with the scan.
- Restart the phone.
- Install available device and app updates.
- Remove and re-register the fingerprint. On Android 16 with One UI 8, follow the swipe-style instructions instead of repeated stationary taps.
Conditions that can reduce recognition
Samsung Canada’s troubleshooting article, updated 30 September 2026, lists the conditions below. Recognition is most likely to be affected by screen protection and charging, and the table shows what to do about each.

Run a diagnostic
If the problem continues, the Samsung Members app includes a Phone diagnostics feature that can check fingerprint recognition on Galaxy devices where the app is installed. Use it to confirm whether the sensor itself is responding before you consider a repair.
What these instructions do and do not establish
The steps above come from Samsung’s consumer support pages. They explain how to set up, use and troubleshoot fingerprint unlock. They do not measure how secure the feature is or how accurate it will be on your phone, and they do not promise that every accessory will work. Labels and layouts change between models, carriers and software versions, so the exact screens on your device are the final reference.
