It can run Django and Flask, but shared hosting is a hands-on deployment rather than a push-to-deploy experience. For a production Python application, the VPS route is generally the clearer fit; beginners who want managed operations and a highly streamlined workflow may prefer a developer-focused platform.
The important qualification is reliability: the often-quoted 99.99% figure is a contractual uptime guarantee for IONOS VPS/server plans, not an independently measured uptime result for a particular Django or Flask application. Your decision should therefore balance control, operational work, support, location, panel usability and the price after any introductory term.

IONOS Python hosting at a glance
| Question | What the available evidence supports | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Can it host Python? | IONOS markets a dedicated Python-hosting product and also offers VPS plans suitable for self-managed Python applications. | The runtime versions, operating-system image and package limits on the exact regional plan you intend to buy. |
| Are Django and Flask supported? | Both frameworks are identified as supported in the Python-focused review evidence. | Whether your preferred deployment server, database, background workers and system packages are available on your selected tier. |
| Is root access available? | Root access is associated with the VPS route, giving you control over the operating system and application stack. | The access model and management responsibility for shared or specially managed products. |
| How reliable is it? | TechRadar reports a 99.99% uptime guarantee for IONOS VPS/server plans. | That guarantee is not a measured Python-application result. Read the current service terms for exclusions, credits and maintenance handling. |
| Is the panel easy? | TechRadar describes a custom IONOS control panel and found routine tasks less intuitive than in cPanel/WHM. | Whether your team can accept a different navigation model and how much work you will do through SSH instead. |
| What does it cost? | Prices vary by country, plan and promotion, so one universal figure would be misleading. | The renewal rate, billing interval, included resources, backups, traffic allowances and any one-time setup charges. |
G2 shows IONOS at 4.3 out of 5 from 20 reviews in 2026. That is a useful snapshot of customer sentiment, but the sample is small and is not a substitute for testing the workflow, support and service terms that matter to your application.

A Python-focused hosting product
IONOS presents a product specifically for Python projects rather than treating Python as an accidental feature of a generic web plan. That positioning is helpful if you are looking for a documented starting point for a small service, a development site or a conventional web application. The product name alone does not tell you how much of the runtime is managed, which Python versions are selectable, or whether long-running processes are permitted. Those details are plan-specific and should be confirmed before you commit a production workload.

VPS plans for full control
A VPS gives you a virtual server on which you control the operating system, Python runtime, web server, process manager and supporting services. The Python review evidence specifically calls out root access and scalable VPS plans. That makes a VPS the most flexible IONOS route for Django or Flask: you can install the packages your application needs, choose a deployment architecture and adjust resources as the workload changes.
Control also transfers responsibility to you. Root access means you must handle updates, users, firewall rules, secrets, application processes, logging, backups and recovery unless a separately managed service covers some of those tasks. A VPS is therefore not automatically easier than shared hosting; it is more capable and more predictable for a technically competent operator.
Shared hosting as a constrained alternative
Shared hosting can be less expensive and simpler from an infrastructure point of view, but multiple customers share the server environment and the provider controls more of the stack. A documented IONOS Django setup uses SSH, pip, tar, an .htaccess file and CGI/FCGI configuration. That toolchain demonstrates that deployment is possible, while also showing why it is more manual than a platform that builds and releases an application from a repository.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Django
Django is identified as supported by the Python-hosting review evidence. On a VPS, that normally means you can select the Python version your project supports, install Django and its dependencies, configure a production web server and connect the application to the database and services it needs. IONOS does not remove the ordinary Django production work: settings must be separated from development values, secrets must not be committed to source control, static files need a serving strategy, and the application process must be supervised.
On shared hosting, the documented approach is more constrained. The application is uploaded, dependencies are installed with pip, and the host is connected to the public web path through Apache configuration in .htaccess and CGI/FCGI. This can suit a modest site or a developer comfortable with hosting internals, but it leaves less room for custom system packages, workers and long-running background jobs than a root VPS.

Flask
Flask is also listed as supported. Its small core can make a simple deployment feel lighter than Django, but Flask applications still need a production serving arrangement, environment-variable management, logging and a process restart strategy. A VPS lets you choose those components. Shared hosting requires you to fit them into the CGI/FCGI and web-server facilities exposed by the plan.
Runtime and dependency flexibility
Framework support should not be confused with unlimited compatibility. A project may depend on a particular Python minor version, a compiled library, a message broker, scheduled workers or a database extension. Before choosing a plan, make a dependency inventory and verify each item against the plan documentation. If one package requires operating-system libraries or a daemon that shared hosting cannot provide, the practical choice is a VPS or a different hosting model.

How the shared-host Django deployment works
The following sequence reflects the documented IONOS-style setup that uses SSH, pip, tar, .htaccess and CGI/FCGI. Exact paths and directives depend on the account and application, so treat the sequence as an implementation map rather than copy-and-paste configuration.
- Confirm the account’s Python and web-entry options. Check the available Python version, whether SSH is enabled, the permitted application directory and the CGI/FCGI mechanism exposed by the plan. Do this before adapting the project, because a mismatch here can invalidate an otherwise healthy application.
- Prepare a production dependency file. Pin or otherwise document the packages your project needs, remove development-only dependencies and make sure the chosen Python version is supported. The deployment uses
pipto install these packages in the hosting environment. - Connect over SSH. Use the credentials and host name supplied for the account. SSH is the administrative path used in the documented setup; the browser panel alone is not enough for the full deployment.
- Transfer and unpack the application. The documented method uses
tarto package or extract the project. Keep the public web directory separate from private configuration and uploaded secrets wherever the account layout permits. - Create the Python environment and install dependencies. Use the account’s supported Python interpreter and
pip. Confirm that installation completes without attempting to write outside your account quota or invoking unavailable system libraries. - Connect the web request to the application. Configure the required
.htaccessrules and CGI/FCGI entry point so that requests are passed to the Python application. The entry script must load the correct settings and expose the callable expected by the hosting interface. - Set production configuration. Define the allowed hosts, secret key, database connection and other environment-specific values. Keep them out of the uploaded source archive when possible, and make sure debug mode is disabled.
- Exercise the public path and inspect logs. Test the home page, static assets, authentication and an error path. If the request fails, use SSH and the hosting logs to distinguish a Python import error from a web-server, permission or path problem.
This workflow is viable for a technically capable owner, but each manual boundary is also a maintenance point. A framework upgrade, dependency change or path adjustment can require another SSH session and configuration edit. If you expect frequent releases, multiple workers or a team unfamiliar with Apache directives, price the engineering time into the hosting decision.
Why a VPS is usually the better production path
Root-level control
Root access lets you install and configure the components a modern Python service commonly needs: a supported Python runtime, a reverse proxy, an application server, a process supervisor, a database client, scheduled jobs and monitoring agents. You can also create least-privilege service accounts instead of running the application as an account with broader permissions. Those are architectural capabilities, not guarantees that the application will be secure; they become your responsibility to configure and maintain.

Resource headroom and scaling
Scalable VPS plans are specifically cited in the Python review evidence. The practical benefit is the ability to select more CPU, memory or storage as the application grows, subject to the options and limits of your region. Scaling still requires capacity planning: a larger VPS does not fix an inefficient query, a memory leak or an unbounded background queue. Establish baseline metrics before moving tiers.

Operational trade-offs
A self-managed VPS means patching the operating system, rotating credentials, limiting network exposure, configuring TLS, monitoring disk space and proving that backups can be restored. Decide who owns those tasks before launch. If no one can provide that coverage, a managed service may be safer even when its runtime choices are narrower.
When shared hosting remains reasonable
Shared hosting can be sensible for a low-traffic Django or Flask site, a prototype or a project whose dependencies fit the supplied CGI/FCGI environment. Its lower level of control is less important when the application does not need workers, custom services or unusual libraries. The decision changes as soon as you need root-only packages, persistent processes or predictable isolation.
Reliability: separate the guarantee from application uptime
TechRadar reports a 99.99% uptime guarantee for IONOS VPS/server plans. A guarantee is a contractual commitment, normally tied to defined measurement rules and remedies; it is not evidence that every Python application will be reachable 99.99% of the time. Your deployment can still fail because of an unhandled exception, an expired certificate, a bad release, an exhausted disk, a database outage or a misconfigured firewall.
Read the current service-level terms for the exact VPS product. Check what counts as downtime, which maintenance windows are excluded, how incidents are measured and whether the remedy is a service credit rather than compensation for business losses. Add independent application monitoring, health checks and alerting so you measure the outcome your users experience.

TechRadar also reports that IONOS has 2,000 employees, more than 90,000 servers, 8 million customer contracts and 10 data centers. Those figures indicate a large operating footprint, but scale alone does not guarantee the latency, support response or regional placement your application needs. Select a location close to your users when the plan offers that choice and test from the networks that matter to you.
Control-panel usability and the SSH boundary
IONOS uses a custom control panel. TechRadar found it less intuitive than cPanel/WHM and reported that routine tasks can take longer to find. That does not make the panel unusable; it means tutorials written for cPanel should not be assumed to match the labels or navigation you see in IONOS.
Map the actions you perform most often before buying: creating a site, adding a domain, issuing or renewing a certificate, viewing logs, managing DNS, opening a support case and changing a plan. If those actions are infrequent, a custom panel may be a minor inconvenience. If you administer many sites or train less experienced staff, the extra navigation can become a recurring cost.
For VPS users, the panel is only part of the workflow. You will spend substantial time in SSH and the server’s own administration tools. A familiar panel cannot compensate for missing operational knowledge, and an unfamiliar panel is less important when your team automates provisioning and deployments.
Pricing, introductory offers and renewals
There is no responsible single IONOS price for Python hosting. Regional catalogs, billing periods, resource sizes and promotions change, and a promotional first term can differ sharply from the renewal rate. Treat every advertised amount as a plan-and-region quote, not as a universal cost for running Django or Flask.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Before ordering, record these figures separately:
- the introductory price and how long it lasts;
- the regular renewal price and billing interval;
- the cost of additional storage, traffic, backups, snapshots or IP addresses;
- any setup, migration or cancellation charges;
- taxes and the currency used for your billing country.
Calculate the cost over the period you expect to operate the application, not only the first month. A low introductory rate can be attractive for a test project but unsuitable for a business that must budget predictable annual renewals. Recheck the checkout summary and service terms immediately before purchase because promotions and plan names can change.
Security, backups and managed operations
The available evidence establishes Python support, VPS control and a contractual uptime figure; it does not establish that every security or backup feature is included in every plan. Ask specifically what is automated and what remains your job.
Questions for a shared plan
- Which Python versions and package installation methods are supported?
- Can you isolate the application and its secrets from the public web directory?
- How are certificates, malware controls, logs and account-level access managed?
- What backup frequency, retention and restore process are included?
Questions for a VPS
- Are operating-system patches, snapshots or backups managed, or do you configure them?
- Can you restore an entire server and recover individual files?
- Which network, firewall and DDoS controls are part of the service?
- What support can troubleshoot the host, and where does support stop at your application code?
Do not call a VPS managed merely because a control panel is present. A panel can simplify provisioning while leaving patching, hardening and incident response with you. Conversely, do not assume shared hosting includes a backup you can restore; verify the retention and test a recovery before relying on it.
How IONOS compares with other hosting models
The most useful comparison is not a list of brand names but the operating model you are buying. Use the following matrix when evaluating IONOS against a developer-focused platform, a managed Python host, a conventional cPanel host or another self-managed VPS.
| Decision axis | IONOS shared hosting | IONOS VPS | Developer-focused or managed alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deployment control | Web-server and CGI/FCGI boundaries; SSH-based configuration is documented. | Root access and control of the application stack. | Often more automated, but the platform’s supported build and runtime choices define the boundary. |
| Managed operations | More host-level work is hidden, while application deployment remains hands-on. | You should assume responsibility for server operations unless a managed option explicitly says otherwise. | Managed products may absorb patches and runtime operations in exchange for less low-level control. |
| Framework and runtime flexibility | Django and Flask are identified as supported, subject to the plan’s Python and CGI/FCGI limits. | Broadest flexibility because you control the runtime and system packages. | Usually streamlined for listed runtimes; verify support for nonstandard dependencies. |
| Compute and storage headroom | Bound by the shared account’s quotas and resource policies. | Selectable and scalable within the VPS catalog. | May scale automatically or by a different pricing unit; compare sustained cost, not only entry price. |
| Security and backups | Verify exactly what the account includes and what you must export. | Verify managed backups, snapshots and network protection; otherwise design them yourself. | Often presents integrated defaults, but retention, restore scope and exclusions still require reading. |
| Support access | Useful for account and hosting issues; application-level debugging remains yours. | Clarify whether support covers the operating system, panel and network or only the infrastructure. | Some platforms provide framework-aware guidance; others limit support to the service layer. |
| Location and latency | Choose from the locations offered for the regional product. | Location selection can affect latency, compliance and data transfer paths. | Compare the actual regions, not a provider’s global marketing footprint. |
| Uptime terms | Do not transfer the VPS guarantee to a shared Python application without a matching term. | The reported 99.99% guarantee applies to IONOS VPS/server plans, subject to its contract. | Compare definitions, exclusions and remedies rather than headline percentages. |
| Panel usability | IONOS’s custom panel may feel less familiar than cPanel/WHM. | Panel usability matters for provisioning; daily administration is often performed over SSH. | Push-to-deploy workflows can reduce panel and shell work but may limit customization. |
| Migration effort | Expect manual file, dependency and web-entry configuration. | More setup initially, then a conventional server architecture you can automate. | Migration may be easier if the platform matches your build process, harder if it requires proprietary services. |
This framework prevents a common mistake: choosing the cheapest first month while ignoring who will operate the server, how the application is deployed and what happens after the promotion ends.
Migration planning for an existing Django or Flask app
- Inventory the application. List Python and framework versions, operating-system libraries, database engines, scheduled tasks, worker processes, file uploads, outbound mail and third-party services.
- Classify each dependency. Mark every item as available on shared hosting, requiring a VPS or needing an external service. A single unavailable daemon can decide the hosting tier.
- Choose the target architecture. Use the shared CGI/FCGI pattern only if its constraints fit. Otherwise document the VPS design, including the web server, application server, process supervisor and database connection.
- Rehearse a clean deployment. Build from a fresh environment, install dependencies with the target Python version and record every command or configuration change. This turns an improvised migration into a repeatable release.
- Move data safely. Schedule a database export and import, verify character sets and permissions, and decide how uploads and user-generated files will be synchronized.
- Test before switching DNS. Use a temporary host name or local override to check login, forms, static files, background work, error pages, email and TLS.
- Plan rollback. Keep the old service available until the new application has passed its acceptance checks and you have a current database backup.
- Monitor after cutover. Watch response errors, latency, memory, disk space, worker restarts and scheduled jobs. A successful page load immediately after migration is not proof that every path works.
Troubleshooting common deployment failures
| Symptom | Likely area | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| The site returns a generic server error after upload. | CGI/FCGI entry point, file permissions, interpreter path or an import failure. | Run the application entry point through SSH where permitted, inspect the host logs, confirm the selected Python interpreter and check that dependencies were installed into the environment actually used by the web process. |
| Imports work in SSH but fail through the browser. | The shell and web process use different environments or working directories. | Use an explicit interpreter and dependency path in the web configuration, then verify the process environment without exposing secrets in the response. |
| Static files are missing. | Collection path, public directory mapping or web-server rules. | Confirm the framework’s production static-file setting, collect files into the intended directory and test a direct asset URL. |
| Routes work locally but not on the hosted domain. | Host-name settings, rewrite rules or application base path. | Check allowed hosts and the .htaccess or reverse-proxy rules, then test a simple health endpoint before debugging framework code. |
| The application stops after an idle period. | Shared-host process policy or an incorrectly supervised VPS process. | Check whether the plan permits persistent processes. On a VPS, configure a process supervisor and restart policy; on shared hosting, move workloads that require workers to a suitable tier. |
| Deployments run out of space or memory. | Account quota, logs, uploaded media, dependency builds or insufficient VPS resources. | Measure disk and memory use, rotate or export logs, remove build artifacts and resize the VPS only after identifying the actual constraint. |
| DNS changes appear inconsistent. | TTL and resolver caching rather than the Python application. | Verify the authoritative records, allow for the published TTL and keep the old service available during propagation. |
Who should choose IONOS?
Good fit
- A developer or small team that wants a choice between a lower-control Python product and a root VPS.
- A Django or Flask owner who can work over SSH and is comfortable maintaining deployment configuration.
- A project that benefits from selectable server resources and the ability to install its own runtime components.
- A buyer who evaluates the full renewal cost and reads the VPS uptime terms rather than relying on a headline percentage.
Look elsewhere first
- A beginner who needs repository-to-production deployment with minimal server administration.
- A team that cannot own operating-system patching, backups, monitoring and incident response on a VPS.
- An application whose dependencies require managed databases, background workers or platform services that the selected shared plan cannot provide.
- An organization for which a familiar cPanel/WHM workflow is a major productivity requirement and the custom IONOS panel has not been validated by the people who will use it.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the required Python minor version and every compiled or system-level dependency.
- Decide whether shared hosting can support the application’s process model or whether root access is mandatory.
- Confirm Django and Flask deployment options, CGI/FCGI restrictions and allowed long-running processes.
- Compare the resources and upgrade path of the exact VPS plans available in your country.
- Read the VPS/server uptime guarantee and its exclusions; do not treat it as application monitoring.
- Verify backup frequency, retention, restore scope and who performs recovery.
- Check data-center location, support channels and the boundary between infrastructure and application support.
- Test the custom control panel or review its workflow for domains, DNS, certificates, logs and billing.
- Record the introductory and renewal prices, billing interval, taxes and add-on charges.
- Prepare a deployment rehearsal, acceptance test and rollback plan before moving production traffic.
Decision rules
Choose the Python-focused shared product when the application is modest, its dependencies fit the supplied environment and you accept SSH-based deployment. Choose an IONOS VPS when root access, custom runtimes, workers, predictable isolation or scalable resources matter more than having the provider manage the operating system. Choose a managed developer platform instead when reducing operational work and obtaining a polished deployment pipeline is worth giving up some infrastructure control.
IONOS can therefore be good Python hosting, but not for one universal reason. Its strongest case is the combination of a Python-aware entry point and a VPS path that gives experienced operators room to build the stack they need. Its weakest case is the expectation that shared hosting will behave like a fully managed platform or that a 99.99% server guarantee will measure the uptime of your code.
