Yes, you can get internet access through an electrical outlet—but not from the outlet by itself. A powerline networking kit sends your router’s local network signal over your home’s electrical wiring. You need internet service, a router, and at least two compatible adapters: one connected to the router, another plugged in where you want network access.
How does internet through an electrical outlet work?
A powerline adapter puts network data onto the home’s electrical conductors. A second adapter receives that data elsewhere in the house and provides a connection to a device. The outlet is the route between adapters; it does not create an internet connection or replace your router or internet service.

In a basic setup, the router-side adapter connects to a router LAN port with an Ethernet cable. The remote adapter can connect a device by Ethernet. Some models also include Wi-Fi, allowing wireless devices to connect near the remote adapter.

- An active internet service and a router.
- A powerline adapter kit with at least two adapters.
- An Ethernet cable to connect the router to the first adapter; check whether the kit includes one.
- A device to connect at the destination, using Ethernet or the remote adapter’s Wi-Fi if available.
- Connect one adapter to a LAN port on the router using Ethernet.
- Plug that adapter into a wall outlet.
- Plug the second adapter into an outlet in the room where you need network access.
- Connect a device to the remote adapter by Ethernet, or join its Wi-Fi network if the model supports Wi-Fi. Follow the kit’s manual for any pairing or security steps.
TP-Link says its powerline products should be deployed in sets of two or more and connected to the same electrical circuit. That is manufacturer guidance, and the wiring layout of a particular home can affect whether a given pair communicates reliably. TP-Link’s powerline overview

- 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐲 - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
- 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.
Will every outlet work equally well?
No. An outlet may be physically available without being a good place for a powerline connection. Wiring condition, distance between adapters, circuit layout, and electrical noise can all affect performance. Existing household wiring was not installed as a dedicated data network, so results can vary from one outlet pair to another.
TP-Link also cautions that actual wireless throughput and coverage are not guaranteed and can vary with network conditions and environmental factors. Its same-circuit guidance is not a promise of a particular speed or proof that every outlet on that circuit will perform alike. TP-Link’s powerline overview

What speed can you expect?
Advertised powerline rates describe signaling capabilities, not the speed an app or internet speed test is guaranteed to receive. TP-Link lists HomePlug AV at up to 600 Mbps physical signal rate and describes HomePlug AV2 as offering gigabit physical speeds. Neither figure should be read as delivered internet throughput. TP-Link Support says actual throughput is typically 20–30% of the declared powerline rate, depending on home wiring. Treat that as the manufacturer’s rule of thumb—not an independent measurement, universal conversion, or forecast for a specific home. TP-Link Support’s throughput guidance

The practical check is to test the connection in the room where you plan to use it. Compare connection quality there with your existing Wi-Fi and with any alternative you are considering, rather than choosing by the adapter’s headline rate alone.
How does powerline compare with other ways to reach a room?
There is no universal winner established by the available evidence. The useful choice depends on the target room and your home’s wiring, as well as whether you need wired or wireless access there.

- 2 GIGABIT PORTS - Provides a secure wired network for connected devices, such as desktops, smart TVs, game consoles, and more. Ethernet cables are included. Tip: Expand connections with an Ethernet switch (sold separately).
- Powerline: Uses the existing electrical wiring and a matched pair or larger set of adapters. Wiring quality, circuit layout, distance, and electrical noise may limit performance.
- Wi-Fi mesh or a range extender: Provides wireless network access, but its suitability depends on coverage and connection quality at the remote location.
- A new Ethernet run: Adds a dedicated wired link but requires routing and installing cable to the destination.
For a fair comparison, consider measured connection quality in the target room, reliability, whether you need Wi-Fi at the remote end, installation effort, and total cost. The cited sources do not provide independent head-to-head results, so they cannot establish that powerline will outperform mesh, an extender, or Ethernet in a particular home.

IEEE 1901-2020 defines physical and media-access-control layers for broadband powerline communications. The standard’s page also specifies use of IEEE 802.1X within IEEE 1901 networks for secure access control and protection of privacy and integrity. That does not establish that every consumer adapter uses the same security configuration. Check the manual for your specific kit for its pairing and encryption instructions. IEEE 1901-2020
