Use a pin to send one fixed place, Find My or Messages to share your changing location for a chosen time, or Maps to share your trip’s ETA while navigating. These options work differently: a pin does not follow you, while Live Location updates as you move.
Choose the right way to share

Apple describes Live Location durations including one hour, until the end of the day, or indefinitely; the available choices can depend on the interface. Apple’s location-sharing overview explains the distinctions between these features.

Share your location with Find My on iPhone
- Open Find My and tap Me.
- Turn on Share My Location. Check Sharing From to see which device is providing your location. If needed, tap Use This iPhone as My Location.
- Tap People, then the add button.
- Choose Share My Location, select a contact, and tap Send.
- Choose how long to share.
To end the share with one person, open that person in Find My’s People list and tap Stop Sharing My Location. Turning off Share My Location in the Me tab hides your location from everyone. See the iOS 26 Find My guide for Apple’s steps.

Share Live Location
- Open the conversation with the person you want to share with.
- Tap the add button, then choose Location.
- Tap Share, select a duration, and send.
For a fixed point instead, use the map’s pin control, position the map on the place you want, and send the pin. It stays at that location rather than updating as you travel. Apple’s iPad Messages guide also documents requesting someone else’s location in a one-to-one conversation and stopping a share through the conversation’s contact details. It notes that sending a location by SMS uses a pinned location.

Share trip progress with Maps or Check In
In Maps, start driving, cycling, or walking directions and use the ETA-sharing option to let someone follow your progress. This shares Live Location during navigation; it is more than sending a destination pin.
Check In is a different Messages feature. It is designed to notify a contact about your arrival, and Apple says your location is shared if an unexpected delay occurs and you are unresponsive. Choose between them based on what you want the recipient to see: ongoing progress during navigation, or a conditional safety check.

Share location with your Family Sharing group
The family organizer sets up location sharing for the group in Settings or Find My. After setup, each family member can decide whether to share their own location and can stop sharing at any time. A member can also choose a different Apple device as the one sharing their location. Joining a Family Sharing group alone does not make every member’s location visible. Stop sharing and review who can see your location
To stop sharing with one person, use the stop-sharing control for that person in Find My or the relevant Messages conversation details. Apple says stopping a share with someone in one app also stops it across apps. Deleting the Find My app does not end a location share that is already active.

If personal safety is at risk, Safety Check on iPhone can help you quickly review and stop sharing information, including location. For broader controls, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and review location access for the relevant app. Turning off Precise Location gives an app only approximate location; its effect depends on the app and should not be assumed to change every sharing surface identically. If location sharing is unavailable or does not work
- Confirm that Location Services is on at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, and check the relevant app’s permission.
- In Find My, make sure Share My Location is enabled and verify the device shown under Sharing From.
- Check whether the feature is available in your location. Apple notes that location sharing and finding people are not available everywhere.
- Consider connectivity and device support: some location-sharing options need internet access, while satellite sending has separate model, region, and setup requirements.

Send your location by satellite with Find My
On supported iPhone models, Find My can send your location by satellite when you are outside Wi‑Fi and cellular coverage. Set up the sharing device and contacts before losing coverage, and already be sharing your location with the contact in Find My. This is not a way to browse a friend’s location: Apple says the satellite control lets you send your own location once every 15 minutes, but does not show a friend’s location in Find My.
Satellite sending requires an active SIM, a clear view of the sky and horizon, and availability in the region. Sending can take a few minutes. Check Apple’s iOS 26 satellite location guide for supported models and regional conditions before relying on it.
