A network switch should not, by itself, cause a major drop in Internet speed. To find out whether it is involved, compare the same computer’s speed directly from the router and through the switch, then check the Ethernet link rate, cables and ports. If those checks do not explain the difference, a local file-transfer test can help separate the switch-side connection from the router or Internet path.
Start with a fair direct-versus-switch comparison
Connect the same computer directly to the router, run an Internet speed test, then connect it through the switch and repeat. Keep the speed-test service and other conditions as consistent as practical. This comparison is useful only if the computer has a wired connection in both cases.

If the direct-to-router result is already poor, the switch has not been shown to be the cause. Check the router, modem, ISP service and test conditions first. TP-Link’s switch troubleshooting guidance likewise begins with a PC whose download speed is normal when connected directly to the router: TP-Link switch troubleshooting.

The computer’s Ethernet link speed and an Internet speed-test result measure different things. Link speed is the rate negotiated between the computer’s network adapter and the port it is plugged into—the router or switch port—not the rate delivered by the Internet service. TP-Link explains this distinction in its Ethernet speed guide.

On Windows, open the network connection status to view the Ethernet speed. On macOS, TP-Link’s instructions give the path as System Settings > Network > Ethernet > Details > Hardware. Labels and menus can vary by operating-system version.
Compare the displayed link rate with the capabilities of the computer’s adapter and the port at the other end. For example, if both are gigabit-capable but the link shows 100 Mbps, treat that as a clue to investigate the ports, cable and negotiation—not proof that the switch is defective. Confirm the router port is also gigabit-capable before drawing conclusions. See TP-Link’s troubleshooting steps.

Inspect the cable and test another port
- Reseat both ends of the Ethernet cable and verify that it is plugged into the intended ports.
- Look for visible cable damage or loose connections.
- Substitute a known-good Ethernet cable, then test another suitable switch port as a separate check.
A lit link indicator does not prove the cable is working properly. Cisco notes, “A link light does not guarantee that the cable is fully functional”; a marginal or stressed cable may keep a link while producing errors. Its LAN switching troubleshooting guide recommends trying a known-good cable.

If the installed cable is suspect, a standards-compliant Cat6 cable is a reasonable replacement or test cable. The point is to rule out a faulty link; replacing a cable is not established as a way to increase speed when the existing Ethernet link is already healthy.

Check speed and duplex negotiation
For an unmanaged-switch setup, TP-Link recommends leaving the router and PC network adapter on auto-negotiation. Keep the settings compatible at both ends of the connection; do not force a speed or duplex setting on only one device without checking the documentation for its link partner.
A speed or duplex mismatch can impair performance. Cisco documents duplex mismatch as a common performance issue on 10/100 Mbps Ethernet links and explains the need for consistent settings across link partners in its speed and duplex troubleshooting guidance. Exact options vary by adapter, router and switch.

Use a local transfer to isolate the fault
An Internet speed test passes through the router and the upstream Internet connection. A file transfer between two computers connected to the switch instead tests the local wired path without relying on Internet download speed.

- Connect two PCs to the switch and transfer a large file between them.
- Compare the local transfer with the direct-versus-switch Internet results, then repeat with a known-good cable or another switch port if the local transfer is poor.
If the local transfer is relatively healthy while Internet speed is slow through the switch, investigate the router’s port or settings and the upstream path. If local transfer is also poor, the switch, cable or endpoint configuration becomes more plausible. The test narrows the fault domain but does not identify a specific failed component. TP-Link describes this comparison in its switch troubleshooting guide.

Read the results together
| What you compare | What the result can indicate |
|---|---|
| Internet speed direct to router versus through switch | A drop only through the switch points to investigating the switched connection; poor results in both setups do not establish the switch as the cause. |
| Negotiated Ethernet link rate versus adapter and port capabilities | A lower-than-expected link rate is a clue to check the ports, cable and compatible negotiation settings. |
| Local PC-to-PC transfer through switch versus Internet speed | A healthy local transfer with slow Internet shifts attention toward the router or upstream path; poor local transfer makes a local connection or configuration issue more plausible. |
These checks help locate where to investigate; none alone proves that a particular component has failed. Without the device models, service rate, cable details, negotiated link rate and test results, the exact cause cannot be determined.
