Those findings do not make either service best for everyone: server policies, your location and torrent swarm, and whether you need incoming connections all matter. This guide compares five VPNs for lawful BitTorrent use and explains how to keep your torrent client’s traffic on the VPN.
How to choose a VPN for BitTorrent
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer protocol: participants exchange pieces of a file directly. The protocol is not inherently illegal; legality depends on whether you have authorization to share the material. In a torrent swarm, peers can see network addresses involved in the connection. A VPN routes traffic through a VPN server, so peers may see the VPN server’s address rather than your public IP—but only if your torrent traffic actually passes through the tunnel.

- P2P policy: Check whether the provider permits torrents on every server or directs you to designated P2P locations.
- Port forwarding: It can help with incoming peer connections, particularly in less well-seeded swarms, but is not a requirement for every download.
- Speed evidence: Treat published results as results from a particular test setup, not a prediction for your ISP, device, protocol, server, or swarm.
- Leak controls: A kill switch can help if the VPN disconnects; correct routing and, where available, binding the torrent client to the VPN interface add another safeguard.
- Terms and privacy: Check the current privacy documentation, subscription and renewal terms, and the features available in your country before paying. The sources cited here do not establish directly comparable privacy evidence or current prices for all five providers.
Five VPNs for BitTorrent, compared
The performance and feature figures below come from Gizmodo’s 2026 comparison. Its speed-loss and qBittorrent results are measurements from that outlet’s test, not guarantees of typical performance. “All servers” or “P2P servers” describes the policy reported in that comparison; check current provider rules before connecting.

Gizmodo’s qBittorrent figures are downloads on each service’s nearest server; they are not universal throughput figures. In the same outlet’s test, a Linux Mint ISO transfer through qBittorrent averaged 17.1 MiB/s on NordVPN’s nearest server versus 17.2 MiB/s without a VPN. Your result can change with distance, server load, protocol, ISP, time, and the number and quality of peers.
Which VPN allows P2P, and what is each one best suited to?
NordVPN: a strong speed-test result with broad server availability
Gizmodo reported P2P availability on all NordVPN servers and measured a 7.8% average speed loss, tied for the lowest in its five-service comparison. Its qBittorrent result on the nearest server was 17.1 MiB/s. It does not offer port forwarding in that comparison, so consider another option if incoming connections are a priority. PCWorld named it its overall pick in a September 9, 2026 guide; that is PCWorld’s judgment, not a universal ranking.

ExpressVPN: similarly low measured speed loss
ExpressVPN also recorded a 7.8% average speed loss and a 17.1 MiB/s qBittorrent result on the nearest server in Gizmodo’s comparison; the outlet reported P2P support on all servers. It does not offer port forwarding in that table. PCWorld listed it as runner-up in its September 9, 2026 guide and noted expensive pricing, so check your actual checkout and renewal terms rather than relying on a review-page offer.
Proton VPN: designated P2P servers and port forwarding
Gizmodo reported that Proton VPN uses servers labeled for P2P, measured 10.2% average speed loss and 16.8 MiB/s in its nearest-server qBittorrent test, and listed port forwarding as available. Proton’s support instructions explain how to select a P2P server and bind supported clients such as qBittorrent or Vuze to the VPN network interface. Proton says P2P servers are available in its Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux apps, as well as its iOS and iPadOS apps; torrent-client apps are not currently allowed on Apple’s iOS App Store. Proton’s product page claims its P2P servers use connections of up to 10 Gbps and that it does not log browsing metadata, IP address, or session length. Those are provider claims, not a promise of anonymity or proof that an account or payment cannot be associated with a customer.

- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
Private Internet Access: port forwarding, with a US-server exception
Gizmodo reported P2P availability on all PIA servers and port forwarding except on US servers. In its test, PIA had a 12.7% average speed loss and a 16.5 MiB/s nearest-server qBittorrent result. TechRadar describes PIA as P2P-friendly and says its no-logs policy has been demonstrated in court twice; treat that as TechRadar’s characterization rather than a substitute for reviewing the provider’s current policy and the underlying reporting. PCWorld cited a clunkier app and relatively pedestrian speeds as drawbacks.
Windscribe: PCWorld’s free pick, with less comparable evidence here
PCWorld named Windscribe its free pick in a September 9, 2026 guide. The cited comparative table does not provide Windscribe’s P2P server policy, measured speeds, or port-forwarding availability, so this evidence does not support a like-for-like performance comparison with the other four services. Check its current P2P rules and free-plan terms for your location before using it for a transfer.

Do you need port forwarding for torrents?
No. Port forwarding is a useful connection feature, not a prerequisite for every torrent. It can make a client more reachable to peers and may matter more for older or poorly seeded torrents. RTINGS notes this trade-off in its comparison of VPN features. Among the services in Gizmodo’s table, Proton VPN supports port forwarding, and PIA supports it except on US servers; the table reports no port forwarding for NordVPN or ExpressVPN, and Windscribe is not covered there. Do not infer Windscribe’s status from its absence in that table.

How to stop a torrent client leaking your real IP
- Connect to the VPN before opening or starting a torrent. Select a location permitted for P2P under the provider’s current rules. If the provider designates P2P servers, use one of those.
- Enable the VPN’s kill switch. It can block traffic if the tunnel drops, but it is not a substitute for checking the route your torrent client uses.
- Bind the torrent client to the VPN interface, if supported. In the client’s network or advanced settings, choose the active VPN network interface rather than a regular internet interface. The exact label and steps depend on the client, operating system, and VPN; follow their current instructions.
- Verify the setup before transferring sensitive or private material. Confirm the VPN is connected and the client is using the intended interface. If the VPN reconnects or the interface changes, recheck the binding before resuming.
Proton VPN’s support article gives provider-specific binding instructions for supported clients and warns that selecting the regular internet interface can expose your real IP even when a kill switch is enabled. Use the equivalent current documentation for whichever VPN and client you choose; interface names and settings differ by device.

How to interpret VPN rankings and privacy claims
There is no single winner across editorial rankings. PCWorld’s September 9, 2026 guide chose NordVPN overall, ExpressVPN as runner-up, Mullvad for privacy, and PIA for customization, while naming Windscribe its free pick. Those are that publication’s categories and assessments. Gizmodo’s comparison instead provides a common set of measured speed and feature results for five services. Neither ranking establishes the best choice for every country, connection, or torrent.
Privacy evidence also needs careful reading. A provider’s no-logs statement is a policy claim; a third-party review, audit, or reported court record is a different kind of evidence, and the sources available here do not establish a standardized privacy comparison across all five options. NordVPN’s August 10, 2026 article reports that Artifact Security tested NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, and Proton VPN, gave NordVPN a score of 91, and rated it the only Platinum service. Those results are presented here only as NordVPN’s account of that test, not as independently verified findings.
Before subscribing, check the provider’s official checkout for your country, currency, term length, renewal rate, taxes, refund terms, and device limits.
