An Intel I225-V NVM error points to a firmware update or firmware-integrity problem. The safest fix is to use the firmware-update tool and LAN driver supplied for the exact motherboard or add-in card—not a generic Intel NVM image—then complete a full AC power cycle and reinstall the OEM driver.
Why an Intel I225-V reports an NVM error
NVM is the adapter’s non-volatile memory, which stores firmware and configuration information. An error can appear when an update fails or the firmware is not usable. The message alone does not establish that the card is permanently damaged.

Start by identifying the exact motherboard or add-in-card vendor, model, and revision. Firmware packages may be specific to the board or card, even when the controller is an Intel I225-V. Intel’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to the motherboard manufacturer’s download center for the supplied firmware tool and LAN package. Intel’s I225-V network troubleshooting article was reviewed on August 21, 2024.
Update the NVM and reinstall the OEM driver
Use the package for the exact board or card. Intel’s stated order is to update the I225-V with the OEM firmware tool before installing the I225-V driver.
#1 Best Overall
- PCI Express 3.1 :5GT/s Support for x1 width (Lane). The original I225-v has been discontinued, and the new generation I226-v will replace it. The two models have identical functionality. Compared to the I225, the I226 has improved error rates, offering better data packet stability over longer cable lengths and providing a more stable network connection. It also enhances the accuracy and stability of data transmission. In the end, the new generation I226 reduced active power consumption, making it more energy-efficient
- Network Interfaces:Integrated MAC + BASE-T PHY. MDI (Copper) standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet interface for 2500BASE-T, 1000BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 10BASE-TE applications (802.3, 802.3u, 802.3bz, and 802.3ab)
- This 2.5GB Dual-Port NIC RJ45 Ethernet Network Card supports a motherboard with an X1/X4/X8/X16 slot and a PCIe gold-plated pin with nice electrical conductivity and high oxidation resistance. In addition, this Dual port network adapter gigabit network card comes with low profile bracket, suitable for desktop/server/workstation and other computer cases
- Support Win10/11,Linux Kernel 5.8/5.16.18,RHEL 8.1/8.3/8.6,Ubuntu* 22.04 LTS,FreeBBSD 13.0,VMware ESXi7.0/8.0,DPDK 20.05/22.07,OPENWRT/UNRAID/PVE.Support PXE function
- Worry free warranty and friendly customer service. If you have any questions, we will help you solve the problem when you need it. If it cannot be solved, we will provide a refund without the need for a return
- Record the hardware identity. Note the motherboard or add-in-card manufacturer, full model, and revision. If you are unsure, check the label on the card or the system or motherboard identification information.
- Get the correct support package. Open the manufacturer’s support or download page for that exact model and obtain its LAN package and NVM firmware update tool. Follow any model-specific instructions on that page.
- Run the NVM update tool. Use the OEM-supplied tool as directed. Do not interrupt the process or substitute an image from another board or card.
- Perform a full AC power cycle. Shut down the system, disconnect AC power, wait 30 seconds, reconnect power, and boot.
- Reinstall the LAN driver. In Windows Device Manager, uninstall the existing I225 driver, then install the current LAN driver supplied in the OEM package.
Intel’s instructions say to remove existing I225 drivers in Device Manager after the power cycle and reinstall the supplied LAN driver. See Intel’s troubleshooting sequence.
Why not use Intel’s generic NVM file?
Do not apply a generic Intel NVM image to an OEM or onboard I225-V unless the system or card vendor explicitly supports that image for your exact model. An Intel Community response warns that a generic image may damage an OEM network card; that is vendor-support guidance, not a universal hardware specification. It is consistent with Intel’s official direction to obtain the firmware tool through the OEM download center.

Having an Intel controller does not by itself establish that a firmware image is appropriate for the complete card. If the OEM package is unavailable, contact the board or card manufacturer rather than guessing from the controller name.

nvmupdatew64e -l nvmupdate.logrecords the update execution history and its success or failure status.nvmupdatew64e -i -l inv.loginventories adapters and helps narrow the diagnostic scope.
Keep both log files and provide them to Intel support if the issue continues, along with the card or motherboard model and revision and the OEM package used. The commands and logging purpose are documented in Intel’s NVM Update Tool Windows Rev1.5 guide.
Restore firmware in recovery mode
Firmware Recovery mode limits adapter functionality, and the adapter may not appear as a normal PXE-capable network interface. Intel’s Ethernet Adapters and Devices User Guide 27.4 says a device in Firmware Recovery mode can be restored to factory defaults using the latest NVM Update Package. The guide directs users to obtain that package from the vendor support website and perform an AC power cycle after restoring the NVM image. For an OEM I225-V, use the package the vendor provides for the exact product.

When replacement is the next step
If the OEM recovery package does not restore the adapter, the relevant replacement search is for an I225-V-compatible card or a compatible 2.5GbE PCIe Ethernet adapter. Verify the exact model, PCIe form factor, operating-system support, and firmware support before buying; a shared 2.5GbE speed rating does not guarantee firmware or platform compatibility.
Intel’s I225-V product support page identifies the controller family, but it does not replace checking the specifications and support information for the particular add-in card.
