Opera has offered ChatGPT in its browser sidebar since 2023, giving users a way to open the service alongside a webpage. That panel is distinct from Opera’s own built-in AI and from a newer, deeper integration called Browser Connector. Here’s what each feature does, how to enable the sidebar service, and what Opera has—and hasn’t—said about sharing browser context.
What Opera’s ChatGPT panel actually is
ChatGPT in Opera’s sidebar is a shortcut to the ChatGPT service inside the browser, not a new Opera-built AI model. Opera announced ChatGPT and ChatSonic sidebar access on March 22, 2023, as part of its initial Browser AI program. At launch, users could also invoke contextual prompts from the address bar or selected webpage text, and had to sign in to or create accounts with the external services separately. Those launch details applied to the early-access rollout on Opera for Windows, macOS, and Linux and Opera GX for Windows and macOS; they should not be read as a current compatibility list. Opera still documents ChatGPT as an optional sidebar service. Its current feature and help pages describe adding it from the sidebar’s service menu. Opera AI feature page Opera Help: Features

How to add ChatGPT to Opera’s sidebar
- Open Opera’s sidebar menu by clicking the three-dot button at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Enable ChatGPT in the list of available services. Opera’s Help page also says the sidebar can be customized from that menu or in Settings.
- Open ChatGPT from the sidebar and sign in to your ChatGPT account if prompted.
These are Opera’s published setup directions; exact menu labels can vary as the browser interface changes. The sidebar panel can be resized, according to Opera’s feature page.

ChatGPT sidebar, Opera browser AI, and Browser Connector compared
| Feature | What it does | Context access | Availability described by Opera |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT sidebar | Opens ChatGPT as a sidebar service in Opera. | The official help and feature descriptions establish access to the service, but do not specify that it can automatically read open tabs. | Listed as a sidebar service in Opera’s current feature and help pages. |
| Opera browser AI | Opera’s own built-in AI feature. | Opera says it is opt-in; page context is enabled by the user and limited to the current page or its Tab Island group. Opera says page access can be disabled in a chat. | Opera described the feature in its January 2026 Opera One R3 announcement. |
| Browser Connector | A separate MCP-based connection for an external AI client, such as ChatGPT or Claude, to use live browser context. | Opera says the client can read page content, understand open tabs, and take screenshots to analyze images or graphs. | Opera announced it for Opera One and Opera GX as an Early Bird feature on April 16, 2026. The announcement does not establish its rollout status today. |
Opera’s January 2026 Opera One R3 announcement describes its own browser AI and its page-context controls. The later Browser Connector announcement describes a different mechanism: connecting an external AI client to live browsing context.
Can ChatGPT read your open tabs in Opera?
Opening ChatGPT in the sidebar does not, on the evidence in Opera’s help and feature descriptions, establish that ChatGPT can automatically inspect all your open tabs. For that type of live browser-context sharing, Opera announced Browser Connector in April 2026. Its stated capabilities include reading page content, understanding open tabs, and capturing screenshots for analysis. Opera’s announcement said users could find it by opening Settings, searching for “AI Services,” installing Browser Connector, and then connecting ChatGPT or Claude. Treat that as the procedure published at announcement time, not a guarantee of today’s menu labels or availability.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Opera described Browser Connector as available in Early Bird mode on April 16, 2026. That is a dated status: Opera’s cited announcement does not confirm whether the feature has since become generally available, nor establish the newest Opera build. Check Opera’s current official release information before relying on a present-day rollout claim.
What Opera says about privacy and page access
Opera says its own browser AI is opt-in and that access to page content is specifically enabled by the user. It describes that context as limited to the current page or the Tab Island group the page belongs to, and says page access can be disabled in a chat. These statements describe Opera browser AI; they should not be assumed to describe ChatGPT’s sidebar service or Browser Connector.
