The company says it made that decision after receiving ecosystem feedback. Separately, Intel and AMD announced the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group in October 2024, a joint forum intended to gather industry input and improve compatibility and predictability across x86 products. The group’s announced goals are not evidence that it formally canceled X86S or has already delivered those improvements.
What happened to Intel’s X86S project?
X86S did not become a released architecture. Intel described it as a draft specification circulated so the ecosystem could assess potential software impacts. Intel’s current status statement is direct: “Based on inputs from the ecosystem, Intel has chosen not to pursue X86S.” The company also reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to software compatibility. That status is narrower than saying every technical detail of the draft was abandoned in a particular way: Intel’s status article does not enumerate which legacy modes or instructions the proposal would have removed. It establishes that Intel stopped pursuing the draft, not a complete technical change log.
What is the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group?
Intel and AMD announced the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group on October 15, 2024. They described it as a forum for industry leaders and the x86 hardware and software communities to provide technical input, promote compatible implementations of architectural features and programming models, and make product offerings more predictable for developers. The announced scope includes data centers, cloud, client, edge, and embedded devices. These are stated aims, not proof that each has been achieved. Intel and AMD’s October 15, 2024 announcement

- Memory: 8 channels with 2 dimms ea, upto 2tb DDR4 2666/2400 mhz
- Helping secure data with processor delivered features like vm and memory encryption, and secure boot
Founding participants
The companies named Broadcom, Dell, Google, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP Inc., Lenovo, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, and Red Hat as founding members. Linus Torvalds and Tim Sweeney were named as luminaries. The announcement called x86 a computing foundation “for over four decades”; that is the companies’ characterization in the 2024 release, not an independently measured statistic.
What the leaders said
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said the industry was approaching a major shift in x86, with new levels of customization, compatibility, and scalability needed for customer needs. AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su said the group would help x86 continue evolving as a platform for developers and customers. Those statements describe the companies’ rationale and ambition at launch, rather than a report of completed work. October 2024 announcement

How the two developments relate
| Aspect | X86S | x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group |
|---|---|---|
| Initiative | An Intel draft for a 64-bit-mode-only architecture, circulated for ecosystem assessment. Intel | A joint Intel–AMD forum announced to gather technical input and coordinate compatibility efforts. Intel and AMD |
| Governance | Intel proposal; Intel says it chose not to pursue it after ecosystem input. Intel | Industry group announced with founding members and two named luminaries. Intel and AMD |
| Stated focus | Potential software impacts of a proposed architecture limited to 64-bit mode. | Compatible architectural features and programming models, product predictability, and developer experience across several computing segments. Intel and AMD |
The evidence supports describing this as a shift from an Intel draft proposal toward broader ecosystem collaboration. It does not establish that the advisory group formally voted to cancel X86S. Intel attributes its own decision to ecosystem input; the group’s creation is a separate, related development.
