The best turntable depends on what matters most: the Pro-Ject Primary E is a strong budget manual pick, the Rega Planar 1 is the easiest documented setup, and the Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB is the most flexible choice here for USB recording and 78 rpm records. For a higher-end upgrade, consider the Rega Planar 3 RS or Planar 6 RS. Before buying, check whether you also need a phono preamp.

Which turntable should you choose?
For a budget manual setup: Pro-Ject Primary E
What Hi-Fi? names the Primary E its best budget turntable in its 2026 guide. It is a straightforward belt-drive, manual deck with an Ortofon OM moving-magnet cartridge. Its appeal is simplicity for listeners who would rather focus on records than extra features. It does not include a phono stage, USB, Bluetooth or automatic operation, so check your amplifier and decide whether manual cueing suits you.

The E1.2 is another belt-drive option, with a supplied Pick It MM E cartridge and 33/45 rpm support. AVForums describes it as a strong-value affordable hi-fi choice. Like the Primary E, it has no included phono stage; budget for compatible amplification if you do not already have one.

For the least complicated setup: Rega Planar 1
Rega describes the Planar 1 as plug and play. It comes with a factory-fitted Carbon moving-magnet cartridge, an RB110 tonearm, automatic bias adjustment, a 24 V synchronous motor and an EBLT belt. Rega says setup is possible in under 30 seconds; that is the manufacturer’s setup claim, not a measured comparison with other decks. StereoNET selected it as its 2026 First Turntable Overall.
For vinyl-to-computer recording: Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB
The AT-LP120XUSB is the clearest fit among these models if you want a USB output, selectable built-in phono preamp and 78 rpm playback. It is a fully manual direct-drive deck, with pitch control and an AT-VM95E cartridge. Audio-Technica says it accepts any VM95 replacement stylus, giving you a defined upgrade path without changing the cartridge body. For a higher-budget Rega: Planar 3 RS or Planar 6 RS
AVForums rates both models 10/10 in its 2026 guide. The Planar 3 RS pairs an RB330 tonearm with an Nd5 cartridge. The Planar 6 RS is listed as a 2026 release and steps up to dual belts, an RB880 tonearm and an Nd9 cartridge. Those specifications establish the main differences described in the guide; they do not establish a measured performance gap or guarantee that either is the right match for a particular room or system.

Choose by operation, drive and features
Manual or automatic
A manual turntable requires you to place the tonearm on the record and lift it off at the end. That is part of the listening routine, but it is less convenient if you want the deck to handle those actions. The Primary E and AT-LP120XUSB are manual; the Rega Planar 1 is documented as plug and play, but the cited details do not establish that it has automatic start or return. Do not treat easy setup as the same thing as automatic operation.

- Experience the high-fidelity audio of vinyl
- Fully automatic belt-drive turntable operation with two speeds: 33-1/3, 45 RPM
- Anti-resonance, die-cast aluminum platter
- Redesigned tonearm base and headshell for improved tracking and reduced resonance
- Integral Dual Magnet phono cartridge with replaceable diamond stylus (ATN3600LC)
Belt drive or direct drive
A belt-drive deck transfers motor rotation to the platter through a belt; a direct-drive deck drives the platter from the motor. The researched picks span both approaches: the Pro-Ject and Rega models listed here use belt-drive arrangements, while the AT-LP120XUSB is direct drive. Drive type alone does not determine sound quality. Compare the whole deck, its features and your intended use rather than choosing on this label alone.
33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm
Check the speed printed on your records before buying. The Primary E and Pro-Ject E1.2 list 33⅓/33 and 45 rpm support; the AT-LP120XUSB adds 78 rpm. The cited details do not give a complete speed specification for every Rega model, so confirm the exact version and included accessories with the manufacturer or seller if a particular speed is essential.

Do you need a phono preamp?
A cartridge produces a low-level phono signal that needs phono-stage amplification and equalisation before it can feed a standard line-level input. A turntable without a phono stage must connect to an amplifier with a suitable phono input or to a separate phono preamp; a regular line input alone is not the same thing.
- Primary E and E1.2: neither includes a phono stage, according to the cited specifications.
- AT-LP120XUSB: its built-in phono preamp is selectable, so you can choose phono or line output to suit the connected equipment.
- Planar 1, Planar 3 RS and Planar 6 RS: the cited product details do not establish whether a phono stage is included. Check the exact model and package before purchase.
Include the cost of a compatible phono stage in your total setup budget when needed. A deck’s listed price is not necessarily the price of a complete, ready-to-play system.

What to check before buying
- System compatibility: identify whether your amplifier has a phono input or whether the turntable supplies a selectable built-in preamp.
- Setup preference: decide whether you are comfortable cueing a manual tonearm or want simpler operation. Verify automatic functions separately from claims about easy setup.
- Records and speeds: match supported speeds to the records you own, particularly if you need 78 rpm.
- Cartridge and stylus replacement: look for a supplied cartridge you can replace, and check which compatible stylus upgrades the manufacturer supports.
- Placement: use a stable, level support surface. If speakers are close to the turntable, consider how vibration and isolation may affect your setup; the cited comparisons do not provide standardized isolation test results.
- Connectivity: USB is useful if you want to record vinyl to a computer; Bluetooth is a separate convenience feature and is not listed for the Primary E. Confirm the exact output options of any other model before buying.
How these recommendations are grounded
The recommendations draw on manufacturer specifications and 2026 editorial guides: What Hi-Fi? for the Primary E, AVForums for the E1.2 and Rega RS models, Rega for Planar 1 setup details, Audio-Technica for the AT-LP120XUSB, and StereoNET for its Planar 1 selection and indicative regional prices. The cited material includes specifications, listed prices and editorial scores, not independent laboratory measurements across all six decks. Treat ratings as those publications’ judgments rather than directly comparable performance measurements.
