Netflix announced price increases on October 18, 2023, affecting Basic and Premium plans in the United States, the United Kingdom and France. The US Basic plan rose by $2 per month and Premium by $3; the ad-supported plan stayed at $6.99. These are the prices reported at the time of the announcement, not current prices.
What Netflix changed in the United States
Netflix raised the US Basic plan from $9.99 to $11.99 per month and Premium from $19.99 to $22.99 per month. The ad-supported plan remained $6.99 per month when the increases were announced. CBS reported the prior and new US prices: CBS News.

New UK and France prices
In the UK and France, Netflix’s Q3 2023 shareholder letter listed the new Basic and Premium prices and said the Ads and Standard tiers were unchanged. The currencies and monthly prices are specific to each market and should not be converted into a single direct comparison.

| Market | Basic | Premium | Unchanged tiers at announcement |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $9.99 → $11.99 per month | $19.99 → $22.99 per month | Ads: $6.99 per month |
| United Kingdom | £7.99 per month after increase | £17.99 per month after increase | Ads: £4.99; Standard: £10.99 |
| France | €10.99 per month after increase | €19.99 per month after increase | Ads: €5.99; Standard: €13.49 |
For UK and France, the letter provides post-increase prices rather than the prior prices, so the size of those increases cannot be calculated from its figures alone. Netflix’s Q3 2023 shareholder letter gives the plan prices and unchanged tiers. Ofcom independently confirms the UK Basic and Premium increases, and that Standard was unchanged: Ofcom’s streaming services market study.

Why Netflix said it was raising prices
Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said the company had spent much of the preceding 18 months focused on paid sharing and was returning to its pricing approach. He described the company’s rationale as investing subscription payments in entertainment and sometimes asking members to pay more. That is Netflix’s explanation for the changes, not independent evidence that the additional cost produced a particular amount of value for subscribers. Peters’s remarks appear in Netflix’s Q3 2023 shareholder letter.
What the announcement does—and does not—show
The figures establish what Netflix announced for these markets in October 2023. They do not establish what plans cost today or whether every tier was open to new customers on the announcement date. In particular, Ofcom’s later UK plan snapshot says Basic was unavailable to new or returning customers; that later availability finding should not be read as a statement about all markets or the day of the announcement.

CBS reported that Netflix added 8.8 million customers in Q3 2023 and had 247.2 million subscribers at the time of its report. Those contemporaneous figures do not show that the price increases caused subscriber growth, cancellations or a specific revenue outcome. The available reporting cited here does not isolate the hikes’ causal effect on churn or revenue. CBS News’ report.
