When familiar development tools start blurring the line between work and personal projects, the first fix does not have to be a new app. In a personal account dated April 27, 2022, web developer Matthew Lang describes keeping iTerm and Visual Studio Code while changing their appearance between contexts—and trying GitLab for personal source-code management. His experience suggests a modest alternative: mark the boundary with a configuration change before rebuilding your toolbox.
Why the same tools began to feel different
Lang was using the same development tools for his job and for spare-time web projects. The overlap made it harder for him to enjoy personal coding after work. His account is about a subjective shift in context, not a measured drop in productivity or wellbeing.
The distinction matters: a familiar app can be practical and still carry associations with the workday. Lang’s response was not to replace everything. He chose a separate source-control service for personal projects, while changing the appearance of tools he already knew.
What he changed—and what he kept
GitLab for personal source-code management
Lang says he was trying GitLab for personal source-code management because its processes were similar to those he already used and it integrated with his hosting provider. This is a description of his reasoning in 2022, not a current product comparison or endorsement.

Different looks for iTerm and Visual Studio Code
He kept using iTerm and Visual Studio Code, but gave them different appearances for work and home. In Visual Studio Code, he changed theme and font settings and used a keyboard shortcut to switch. He says the visible change helped him feel more in the right mindset for personal work.
That is Lang’s reported experience; the account does not establish that changing a theme or font improves focus for everyone, or quantify any effect.

How to decide whether to change settings or add a tool
Lang’s choices point to three different ways to mark a boundary. They are alternatives, not a ranking, and the right one depends on what is actually causing friction.
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the same app and change its appearance or configuration | The tool works for both contexts, but seeing the same interface makes them feel too similar. | You retain a familiar workflow, but the distinction may be mostly visual. |
| Use a different tool for one context | You want a stronger separation and are willing to learn or maintain another workflow. | A clearer boundary can mean more setup and tool-switching overhead. |
| Use a separate source-control service for personal projects | You want personal code organized separately, or a service’s workflow fits your project setup. | You will manage another service; Lang’s account does not establish that this is best for other developers. |
A practical starting point is to identify the specific thing you want to separate: the look of the workspace, the actions you perform, or where project files are hosted. If only the interface is the problem, a theme, font, appearance setting, or routine may be enough. If you need a distinct workflow or a separate home for personal code, a different tool or service may make more sense.

What this account does—and does not—show
The source is a close match for this topic: Lang’s archive entry is dated April 27, 2022, and describes using different tools and themes to separate work from home. It is not confirmed as the exact article represented by this title. The choices and product descriptions should therefore be read as part of that historical account, not as current software guidance.
Most importantly, this is one developer’s account of what helped him feel a shift in context. It does not report a controlled comparison, a productivity percentage, or a general result. The useful idea is narrower: before adding another application, consider whether a small, reversible change to a tool you already use could create the distinction you want.
