Instax Square 3 vs Polaroid Now+: Verify the Fujifilm Model Before You Buy

There is no Fujifilm camera verified in official material as “instax SQUARE 3.” Fujifilm’s documented square cameras include the instax SQUARE SQ1 and SQ40, so a definitive comparison with Polaroid Now+ would risk assigning the wrong specifications to the product in the title.

If “Square 3” was intended to mean the SQ1, the choice is conditional: SQ1 is the simpler automatic camera with a documented 0.3-metre shooting range and Selfie Mode, while Now+ is the more experimental option because its Bluetooth-connected app provides tripod, aperture-priority and full-manual modes. Confirm the exact Fujifilm model and the Now+ generation before buying film or accessories.

Why the name “Instax Square 3” must be checked first

Fujifilm’s official product information identifies the instax SQUARE SQ1 and instax SQUARE SQ40. It does not establish an “instax SQUARE 3” model. That could mean a retailer has used an inaccurate shorthand, the title contains a typo, or a regional or legacy designation needs separate confirmation. It is not safe to silently treat “Square 3” as SQ1.

Model identity matters because film format, controls, accessories and manuals are model-specific. A comparison that substitutes SQ1 for an unverified product may look precise while answering the wrong buying question.

How to identify the Fujifilm camera

  1. Read the model name printed on the camera body, original box and manual. Look specifically for SQ1 or SQ40, rather than relying on a seller’s listing title.
  2. Match the model name with Fujifilm’s official SQUARE camera catalog and product page for your region.
  3. Check the exact regional designation if the camera was imported or sold second-hand. Keep the model name and region together when checking film and support documents.
  4. Do not purchase accessories or film until the model printed on the camera agrees with the documentation.

If the seller cannot provide a photograph of the body marking, treat that as an unresolved buying risk. A listing may combine photographs, specifications and reviews from several SQUARE models. Ask for the exact model code, not just a color name or a phrase such as “third-generation square.” Retain the model code when searching for the manual, replacement batteries and film instructions.

What the verified instax SQUARE SQ1 offers

Automatic, point-and-shoot operation

Fujifilm describes SQ1 as a point-and-shoot camera with automatic exposure. The camera is designed to make the exposure decision itself rather than expose a set of manual controls for the photographer. That favors quick portraits, parties and casual snapshots where you want to press the shutter without configuring an app.

Automatic exposure does not mean every frame will look identical in every situation; it means the photographer is not selecting the exposure manually. For creative use, that shifts control toward subject choice, distance, timing, framing and the square format. It also makes the camera easier to hand to a guest who has never used an instant camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented shooting distance and Selfie Mode

The SQ1 specification gives a shooting range of 0.3 metres and beyond. Its Selfie Mode is specified for approximately 0.3 to 0.5 metres. These distances are SQ1 specifications only; they must not be transferred to an unidentified “Square 3” or another SQUARE camera.

For close creative work, the useful question is whether your subject falls inside that documented range. A camera designed around a 0.3-metre minimum is easier to plan for when you are making arm’s-length portraits or selfies, because you can work within a published distance instead of guessing.

Measure the working distance from the camera to the subject, rather than from your own body to the subject. A selfie taken closer than the specified range can produce an improperly framed or focused result. For a group portrait, step back far enough to include everyone and remember that the square frame may leave less horizontal room than a phone preview.

Film system

SQ1 uses FUJIFILM instax SQUARE instant film. The square frame is part of the camera’s composition: you do not get the wider rectangular proportion associated with some other instant systems. Confirm that SQUARE film is available where you live before committing to the camera.

When budgeting, distinguish the camera from the consumable. Buying an SQ1 does not make every instax cartridge interchangeable; the film name printed on the pack should explicitly say SQUARE. Check the exposure count on the pack and keep unopened film within the storage conditions stated by Fujifilm.

Power and the manufacturer’s battery figure

The SQ1 manual specifies two CR2 lithium batteries and reports an approximate capacity of 30 SQUARE film packs under Fujifilm test conditions. That is a manufacturer test-condition figure, not a guarantee of how long every user’s batteries will last. Cold temperatures, flash use, battery age and shooting habits can affect real-world results.

For an event, carry a fresh spare pair of the specified batteries rather than relying on the approximate figure. Battery capacity is not the same as the number of prints in a particular pack, and the manual’s test setup may not match frequent flash use, long storage or winter shooting.

Where SQ1 fits creatively

  • Strength: a predictable workflow with automatic exposure and no phone connection required for the documented shooting modes.
  • Strength: a published close-shooting range and dedicated Selfie Mode.
  • Trade-off: the official SQ1 description does not present the app-driven manual controls documented for Now+.
  • Requirement: use the correct SQUARE film; do not assume another instant-film cartridge will fit.

What Polaroid Now+ documentation confirms

Bluetooth-connected creative modes

Polaroid’s current camera-selection support guide describes Now+ creative options that become available when the camera is connected to a smartphone over Bluetooth. The listed modes include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tripod mode for work where the camera is mounted and the photographer wants to avoid hand movement.
  • Aperture priority for choosing the aperture while the camera manages the related exposure decision.
  • Full manual mode for controlling the exposure settings directly through the app.

Those controls make Now+ the more promising candidate for deliberate experiments with motion, depth of field and long, carefully timed compositions. They also add setup: you need a compatible smartphone, the app connection and enough time to choose settings before exposing the frame.

Plan the connection before the decisive moment. Pair the camera, open the app, select the intended mode and confirm that the camera remains connected. If you are photographing a moving subject or a fast-changing scene, the extra setup can be a creative advantage only when it does not cause you to miss the moment.

Tripod mode is most relevant when the camera itself is supported and the composition can remain in place. Aperture priority is useful when controlling the aperture is more important than letting the camera choose it automatically. Full manual mode demands the greatest attention because the photographer must make the exposure decisions through the phone interface. These are workflow distinctions, not promises that every generation has identical menus.

Generation-specific filter compatibility

The same support guide says the Now and Now+ Filter Set is compatible with Generation 3 cameras only. “Now+” alone is not enough information to establish accessory compatibility. Identify the camera generation first, then check the accessory documentation for that generation.

Do not infer compatibility from a product photograph or from the fact that an accessory uses the word “Now.” A filter that fits physically may still be unsupported for a different generation. Keep the camera’s generation and the filter-set name together when ordering, and verify return terms if the listing is unclear.

What still needs confirmation

The guide presents Now+ creative features across a product line rather than establishing every feature for one unidentified camera generation. Before relying on a particular control or accessory, verify the exact generation printed on the camera or listed in its official manual.

Also confirm the film specification for that exact Now+ generation. The name of a Polaroid camera family is not a substitute for the film designation in the manual. A retailer may display film intended for another Polaroid format beside the camera, so check the cartridge description and exposure count before adding it to your order.

Which camera is better for creative photos?

There is no responsible universal winner while one model name and one generation remain unresolved. The better choice depends on whether “creative” means controlled experimentation or a fast, physical shooting experience.

Choose the SQ1 path if you want simplicity

If the seller confirms that the intended Fujifilm camera is SQ1, it is the clearer fit when you want automatic exposure, a published close-focus range and a square print without managing a phone connection. Its Selfie Mode gives you a defined 0.3–0.5-metre working distance for close portraits.

This is particularly practical for gatherings where several people will use the camera. Fewer settings reduce the chance that somebody changes an exposure control and forgets to restore it before the next frame.

It also suits a deliberate limitation: you can spend your creative effort on arranging people in the square, choosing a moment and accepting the result as a physical print. That is different from having fewer creative possibilities; it is a choice to work within a fixed, repeatable process.

Choose the Now+ path if you want app-led experimentation

Now+ is the stronger candidate when your creative process includes tripod work, aperture-priority decisions or fully manual exposure. Bluetooth and the smartphone app become part of the workflow, so this option rewards photographers who are willing to plan and adjust each frame.

That advantage is conditional on the exact Now+ generation supporting the feature you intend to use. Treat the product family name as a starting point, not as proof that every generation has identical controls.

Consider the physical workflow as well as the feature list. You may need to carry a charged phone, pair devices and operate two interfaces while handling instant film. For a planned still life or night composition, that may be worthwhile. For a child’s birthday or a rapidly changing street scene, the additional steps may be less convenient than SQ1’s automatic operation.

Choose based on the subject you actually photograph

Your priority More suitable direction Reason
Fast snapshots with minimal setup Verified SQ1, if that is the intended model Automatic exposure and point-and-shoot operation are documented for SQ1.
Selfies and close portraits Verified SQ1, if its documented range suits your framing The specification gives 0.3 m and beyond, with Selfie Mode at 0.3–0.5 m.
Longer, controlled compositions from a tripod Now+, after confirming generation and app support Tripod mode is listed among the Bluetooth-connected creative modes.
Exposure experimentation Now+, after confirming generation and app support Aperture priority and full manual mode are described in Polaroid’s guide.
Physical filters Only a Generation 3 Now+ with a compatible filter set The documented Now and Now+ Filter Set compatibility is limited to Generation 3 cameras.
Shared use by beginners SQ1, if SQ1 is what the listing actually contains Its documented point-and-shoot operation avoids pairing and app-setting steps.

Film cost and availability: what to check locally

No current, directly comparable film prices or per-print costs are established for the two intended cameras. Prices vary by country, retailer, pack size and promotions, so a fair calculation must use the same region and date for both systems.

Use this process before buying:

  1. Identify the exact camera model and its required film.
  2. Record the local price and exposure count printed on each film pack.
  3. Divide pack price by the number of exposures to obtain a price per exposure.
  4. Check several local sellers for regular stock, not only a temporary promotion.
  5. Include shipping, import charges and the likelihood of buying multipacks when comparing long-term cost.

For SQ1, the required system is instax SQUARE film. For Now+, confirm the exact film specification in the manual for the generation you are considering rather than assuming that a film listing for another Polaroid camera is compatible.

Use the same calculation for occasional and heavy use. Someone making ten prints a month may value local availability more than a small multipack discount, while a frequent shooter should include the cost of repeated shipping. Record the date of each price check because film promotions and stock can change quickly.

Buying checklist before you place an order

  1. Correct the Fujifilm name: obtain written confirmation that the listing is SQ1, SQ40 or another identified SQUARE model.
  2. Confirm the Now+ generation: record the generation number or exact model designation from the seller and official support information.
  3. Match the creative feature: if you need manual exposure, verify that the app and camera generation provide full manual mode; if you need filters, verify Generation 3 compatibility.
  4. Verify film: check the film name, size and cartridge listed in the relevant manual.
  5. Calculate running cost: compare local price per exposure using current packs, not an old review or an overseas listing.
  6. Check the workflow: decide whether you are comfortable carrying a smartphone, pairing over Bluetooth and changing settings before shooting.
  7. Check support documents: download the manual for the exact model and region before discarding packaging or buying optional accessories.
  8. Plan batteries: if buying SQ1, include two CR2 lithium batteries and a spare pair for important events; do not treat the approximate 30-pack figure as a guarantee.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying a listing that calls itself “Square 3”

A marketplace title is not proof of a Fujifilm model. Ask for a clear photograph of the model marking and compare it with Fujifilm’s official documentation before purchase.

Assuming SQ1 specifications apply to every SQUARE camera

The 0.3-metre range, Selfie Mode distance, automatic-exposure description and CR2 battery information belong to SQ1. Keep those details attached to that model only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every Now+ accepts the same filters

Polaroid’s guide makes compatibility generation-sensitive and identifies the Now and Now+ Filter Set as Generation 3-only. Check the generation before ordering accessories.

Confusing “manual mode available” with “manual mode always active”

For Now+, the documented manual controls require a Bluetooth connection to a smartphone. The camera’s app-based workflow is different from a camera that exposes physical manual controls without a phone.

Using battery-test figures as a personal guarantee

Fujifilm’s approximately 30-pack SQ1 figure comes from manufacturer test conditions. Treat it as an indication for planning, not a promise for every climate, battery brand or shooting pattern.

Comparing prices from different regions

A low overseas listing may exclude tax, shipping, import fees or warranty support. Compare camera and film prices in the country where you will actually use the system, and note whether the listed pack count is identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing accessories before choosing the camera

Filters, cases and film are not universal simply because they share a brand name. Confirm the model and generation first, then buy only accessories whose documentation names that camera.

Provisional verdict

First resolve the title: “instax SQUARE 3” is not verified by the official Fujifilm material identified here. If the intended camera is SQ1, choose it for automatic, square-format shooting and its documented close-portrait range. Choose Now+ when app-connected tripod, aperture-priority or full-manual control is the reason you want an instant camera, and confirm the generation before relying on features or filters.

Until the Fujifilm model, Now+ generation, compatible film and local running costs are confirmed, any claim that one is simply “better” would be more confident than the available specifications allow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an Instax Square 3 camera?

Fujifilm’s official material identified here documents the instax SQUARE SQ1 and SQ40, not a model named instax SQUARE 3. Ask the seller for the model marking and verify it against Fujifilm’s regional catalog before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I treat Instax Square 3 as the SQ1?

No. SQ1 is a plausible intended model, but its specifications should not be assigned to an unidentified product without confirmation.

What film does the verified SQ1 use?

The SQ1 uses FUJIFILM instax SQUARE instant film. Check the pack name and exposure count before purchase.

How close can the SQ1 focus?

Fujifilm specifies a shooting range of 0.3 metres and beyond, with Selfie Mode intended for approximately 0.3 to 0.5 metres.

How many film packs do SQ1 batteries last?

The SQ1 manual reports approximately 30 SQUARE film packs with two CR2 lithium batteries under Fujifilm test conditions. Actual results vary with temperature, battery age, flash use and shooting habits.

What creative modes does Polaroid Now+ have?

Polaroid’s support guide lists tripod mode, aperture priority and full manual mode when Now+ is connected to a smartphone over Bluetooth. Verify that the exact generation you own supports the mode you need.

Will the Now and Now+ Filter Set fit every Now+?

No. The support guide specifies compatibility with Generation 3 cameras only. Confirm the camera generation before ordering.

Which is better for creative photography?

A confirmed SQ1 favors simple, automatic square-format shooting. A confirmed, generation-compatible Now+ favors app-led tripod and exposure experimentation. The correct choice depends on your subject, tolerance for setup and local film cost.

The Bottom Line

Verify the Fujifilm model first: “instax SQUARE 3” is not established in official material. Choose a confirmed SQ1 for automatic square shooting, or a generation-verified Polaroid Now+ for Bluetooth app controls. Check film, accessory compatibility and local price per exposure before ordering.
