You can use a Mac to install or boot a custom Android recovery: Google’s Android SDK Platform-Tools includes Mac versions of ADB and fastboot. But there is no universal recovery image or command. The right file and method depend on your exact phone model and variant, ROM and build, and recovery partition layout. Identify those details and follow the instructions for that device and recovery build before writing anything.
Identify the phone and recovery build first
Before downloading an image or entering a fastboot command, establish:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The manufacturer, exact model and variant, and device codename, if the maintainer uses one.
- The ROM and Android build currently installed.
- Whether the bootloader is unlocked.
- Which recovery build explicitly supports that device and ROM.
Check TWRP’s official device information or the relevant OrangeFox or device-maintainer instructions. A similar model name is not enough to establish compatibility. The correct image, partition target, boot method, storage decryption support, and any follow-up installation step can vary by device and build. There is no universal winner between TWRP, OrangeFox, and an AOSP-derived recovery; choose a build whose maintainer supports your exact combination.
Prepare the Mac and make a backup
Install Platform-Tools
Download the Mac version of Android SDK Platform-Tools from Android Developers, then unzip it. The official release page listed Platform-Tools 37.0.1, released in July 2026, when checked on October 7, 2026; the page’s download links point to the latest release and may change. Use the current official download rather than an old third-party bundle. Open Terminal and navigate to the extracted platform-tools directory, then use the commands specified by the instructions for your exact device.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Check the USB connection
Connect the phone with a USB data cable compatible with the phone’s port and the Mac’s port, using an appropriate adapter if needed. A charge-only cable will not provide the data connection required for ADB or fastboot. Android phones do not all use the same connector.
Back up before unlocking or changing recovery
Back up your data before proceeding. OrangeFox specifically instructs users to back up both the data partition and internal storage before flashing or upgrading a recovery. Bootloader unlocking is controlled by the device maker; it can erase user data on many devices, but the steps and wipe behavior are not universal. Follow the maker’s instructions for your model rather than assuming one unlocking sequence works across phones.

Choose the install or boot method for the device layout
Do not choose fastboot flash recovery or fastboot boot based only on whether a device is described as A-only or A/B. Confirm the exact layout and follow the instructions attached to the recovery build. OrangeFox’s documented examples distinguish these cases:
| Device layout in OrangeFox’s guidance | Documented image action | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| A-only, or A/B or Virtual A/B with a dedicated recovery partition | fastboot flash recovery recovery.img |
Use a different command if the device maintainer specifies one. |
| Standard boot-as-recovery A/B or Virtual A/B | fastboot boot recovery.img |
This example does not apply to Virtual A/B devices with a dedicated recovery partition. |
| Vendor_boot-as-recovery | Follow the ROM maintainer’s device-specific instructions. | Do not infer a command from the other layouts. |
These examples describe OrangeFox’s guidance, not a complete taxonomy of Android devices or guaranteed commands for every recovery. A TWRP device page may also show a fastboot method, but that is an instruction for the supported handset on that page—not a template to apply to another model.

OrangeFox: the image step is not the whole installation
For the documented OrangeFox fastboot route, the guide describes extracting recovery.img from the OrangeFox ZIP and using the device-appropriate image action. After booting into recovery, check that data mounts and touch input works. Then install the matching OrangeFox ZIP from within recovery as directed. OrangeFox says not to flash its ZIP through fastboot. Its installation guide also says: “Always ensure that you are flashing the correct OrangeFox zip for the ROM that is running on your device.”
Understand what “AOSP recovery” and ADB sideload mean
“AOSP recovery” can refer to a vendor-supplied stock recovery or to a custom build derived from AOSP; capabilities depend on the particular build. ADB sideload is a way to send a package to a compatible recovery after booting into it. It is not a universal way to install a recovery image to a partition.

- Boot a recovery that supports sideload and enter its sideload mode using that recovery’s on-screen instructions.
- From the Mac, run
adb sideload /path/to/file.zip, replacing the example path with the actual package path.
That procedure sends a package to a recovery in sideload mode; it does not replace the device-specific fastboot method for booting or writing a recovery image. Check the recovery and package instructions before sideloading.

Once recovery starts, confirm that its basic functions work before installing a ROM or add-on. For the OrangeFox workflow described above, verify data mounting and touchscreen input, then use the matching ZIP installation step. If recovery will not boot or a required function fails, stop rather than repeatedly writing to guessed partitions; return to the current instructions from the exact device or ROM maintainer.

When diagnosing an OrangeFox-specific issue, its FAQ gives a recovery-log retrieval example: adb pull /tmp/recovery.log. Use that diagnostic when relevant to the problem; it is not an installation command.
What to confirm before running a command
- The recovery file is for the exact model and variant, and matches the ROM/build requirements.
- The bootloader is unlocked if the recovery’s installation instructions require it.
- The device’s partition layout and maintainer instructions support the selected image action.
- Your backup is complete, and the Mac-to-phone USB connection carries data.
- For OrangeFox, you know whether the documented workflow requires installing its matching ZIP from recovery after the image step.
Because no phone model is specified here, these directions cannot identify a recovery file, partition name, unlock procedure, or guaranteed boot method for a particular handset. Use the current instructions for the exact device and build before proceeding.
