To set up a TP-Link Wi-Fi extender, connect it to your existing router using the Tether app, a browser, or WPS if both devices support it. Start near the router, use the router’s Wi-Fi password, then move the extender toward the weak-coverage area while keeping it within the router’s range. Exact menus and indicator lights vary by model and hardware revision, so check the matching TP-Link manual.
Choose a setup method
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Tether app | Phone-guided setup | The extender must support Tether. If discovery fails, connect the phone to the extender’s TP-Link_Extender Wi-Fi and turn off cellular data. TP-Link’s Tether guide |
| Browser | Setup from a computer or phone, or access to local settings | Your device must connect to the extender by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Internet access is not required to open the local management page; addresses and steps vary by model. TP-Link’s web login guide |
| WPS | Quick pairing when both router and extender support WPS | Pair within the router’s window; some dual-band setups require a second pairing. If it fails, use the app or browser method. TP-Link’s WPS guide |
Before you begin
- Find the extender’s exact model and hardware version on its label, then use the matching TP-Link support page or manual. Tether support and setup details are not universal.
- Plug the extender into an outlet near the router. TP-Link recommends starting within 10 feet for Tether setup; its troubleshooting guidance recommends within 16 feet if the extender cannot find or connect to the router. Wait for the Power LED to become solid. Tether setup guide · Setup troubleshooting
- Have the router’s Wi-Fi password ready. This is different from the management password you may create for the extender.
- If using Tether, install the app and sign in if prompted. Follow your model’s instructions for positioning or orientation.
Set up with the Tether app
- Open Tether, tap the plus sign, and select Add a Range Extender.
- With the extender powered on near the router and its Power LED solid, follow the app prompts to connect. If automatic discovery does not work, open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, connect to
TP-Link_Extender, turn off cellular data, then return to Tether. - Create the extender’s management password when asked. Keep it distinct from the router’s Wi-Fi password.
- Select the router’s 5 GHz network if available and enter the router’s Wi-Fi password. Repeat for 2.4 GHz if prompted. Check the selected network and password before confirming.
- Let the extender apply its settings. TP-Link’s current guide says this step takes 1–2 minutes.
- Once setup is complete, move the extender roughly halfway between the router and the weak-coverage area, but keep it within the router’s range. In the cited guide, a solid blue Signal LED indicates a successful location; red means move closer to the router.
- Connect phones and other devices to the extended network using the network name and password shown in the app. TP-Link Tether setup guide
Set up in a browser
- Connect a phone or computer to the extender’s Wi-Fi network, or connect by Ethernet if your model supports it.
- Open TP-Link’s web login guide for model-specific access details. Common options are
tplinkrepeater.netand, for a factory-default device,192.168.0.254; an extender that has already joined the router may use a different address. - Create or enter the extender’s management password, then follow the Quick Setup Wizard.
- Choose the router’s Wi-Fi network and enter its Wi-Fi password—not the extender management password. A dual-band extender may ask for separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Skip 5 GHz if your router does not provide that band.
- Finish the wizard, then place the extender between the router and the weak-signal area while keeping it in range.
The management page is local to the extender, so your device needs a connection to the extender but the page itself does not need an internet connection. For a RE215 or RE315 V1, follow the model-specific user guide if its instructions differ.

Set up with WPS
- Confirm that both the router and extender support WPS and consult the extender’s manual for its pairing button and success indicator.
- Press WPS on the router, then press WPS on the extender within the router’s pairing window. TP-Link’s general WPS guide says the process lasts two minutes.
- Check the extender’s Signal LED or manual to confirm pairing. Some dual-band devices require repeating the sequence for the other band.
- If pairing does not complete, use Tether or browser setup instead.
WPS setup may copy the router’s network name or add “EXT.” Tether or browser setup may let you choose a name, while EasyMesh or OneMesh can carry router settings through on supported equipment. The result depends on the method and model. TP-Link setup troubleshooting

Choose a good location and connect devices
After setup, place the extender roughly halfway from the router toward the area where coverage is weak. It still needs a usable connection to the router: putting it inside the dead zone will not help it relay the signal. If its signal indicator shows a poor connection, move it closer to the router. Once placed, connect each phone, computer, or other client to the extended network using its displayed name and password.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The app cannot find the extender
- In the phone’s Wi-Fi settings, join
TP-Link_Extenderand return to the app. - Turn off cellular data, retry discovery, or reboot the extender.

The router’s network does not appear
- Rescan and check that another device can see the router’s network.
- Move the extender closer to the router; TP-Link suggests within 16 feet during troubleshooting. Reboot both devices and scan again.
- If the router does not have a 5 GHz network, skip that band during setup.
- TP-Link identifies some DFS or automatic 5 GHz channel configurations as possible sources of instability. Check the router documentation before changing its channel.
The extender rejects the password or will not connect
- Enter the router’s Wi-Fi password, not the extender’s management password, and check for typing errors.
- If router MAC filtering, wireless access control, or an access-control list is enabled, TP-Link advises disabling it for setup and trying again.
- Move the extender closer, rescan, or switch to another setup method.

The management page will not load
- Make sure the phone or computer is connected to the extender by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Try
tplinkrepeater.netor192.168.0.254. If the extender has joined the router, check the router’s DHCP client list for its current IP address. - Reboot the extender and consult the login instructions for its exact model.

The extender connects but there is no internet
- Confirm that the router itself has internet access and that the extender is still within its Wi-Fi range.
- If the router’s network name or password changed, reconnect the extender using the new details.
TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide states, “The extender relies on your router for an internet connection.” Source: TP-Link WiFi Extender Setup Help and Troubleshooting.
You forgot the extender management password
TP-Link advises resetting the extender to factory settings and configuring it again. Reset timing varies: its current troubleshooting guidance describes a one-second press for many units, while some earlier firmware versions require holding Reset for about five seconds until the Power LED blinks. Check the manual for your exact model before resetting. TP-Link setup troubleshooting
