Neither Samsung nor iPhone has a proven brand-wide durability advantage. Consumer Reports’ May 2026 ratings give the Samsung Galaxy S26 and Apple iPhone 17 the same durability score: 5/5. That is a tie for those two models on that rating system—not proof that all phones from either brand survive accidents equally well.
What the durability ratings tell you
Consumer Reports describes evaluating smartphones for resistance to drops and tumbles. Its reproduced May 2026 ratings give both the Galaxy S26 and iPhone 17 a 5/5 durability score. The excerpt does not establish that the phones faced identical fall conditions, nor does it provide enough detail to call either one unbreakable. Consumer Reports’ description of its drop testing and the May 2026 ratings support a narrow conclusion: these two models received the same score.

That score does not answer every durability question. A phone may resist drops but still be vulnerable to liquid exposure, and a device’s condition, prior damage, repair history, and access to service matter over years of ownership.

How water resistance differs—and what it does not mean
iPhone 17: a specific laboratory rating
Apple says iPhone 17 has an IP68 rating under IEC 60529. Its stated test was to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under controlled conditions. This describes a laboratory rating, not a guarantee that every real-world spill or immersion will leave the phone unharmed. Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report also cautions that splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent and may decrease through normal wear.

Samsung Galaxy: check the exact model
Samsung Canada says water-resistance ratings vary by Galaxy model. Its guidance describes IPX7 and IPX8 as limited immersion ratings and warns against deeper, longer, or high-pressure exposure. Because the available guidance does not give a specific Galaxy S26 rating to compare with the iPhone 17 figure, do not assume all Galaxy phones share one water-resistance level. Check the specifications for the exact model you are considering. Samsung Canada’s water-resistance guidance explains the limits.
A new-phone rating should not be applied uncritically to a used, damaged, or previously repaired device. Samsung says resistance may weaken with age and wear; Apple likewise warns that resistance can decline over time.

Warranty and repair affect the cost of an accident
Water resistance is not the same as warranty coverage. Apple says liquid-damage service is excluded from its one-year limited warranty, while noting that consumer-law rights may apply. Read the terms that apply in your region before relying on warranty protection. Apple’s liquid-damage warranty guidance sets out its policy.
Apple lists its retail stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, and central repair locations as repair channels. The available information does not provide a matched, current regional comparison of Samsung and Apple repair prices or turnaround times, so it does not establish that one brand is cheaper or easier to repair overall. Apple’s repair options describe its channels.

What about rugged Samsung phones?
Samsung Business Insights reported that the ruggedized Galaxy XCover7 Pro underwent 26 drop tests from 1.5 meters onto steel. That is a manufacturer-reported test of a rugged model—not a like-for-like comparison with an iPhone, and not evidence that Galaxy S-series phones are more durable. Samsung’s XCover7 Pro testing account applies to that device and test context.

How to choose the phone that fits your risks
- For drop concerns: compare ratings for the exact models rather than assuming a brand advantage. A case made for the phone’s precise generation and model is a sensible way to address impact risk, but it cannot guarantee that the phone will not break.
- For water exposure: compare the exact model’s stated IP rating and its test limits. Treat those limits as controlled conditions, not permission for deeper, longer, or high-pressure exposure.
- For a used phone: account for age, wear, damage, and repair history; a new-device resistance rating may no longer describe its condition.
- For long-term ownership: check repair availability and region-specific service terms for the model before buying. The evidence here does not establish a brand-wide repair-cost winner.
