Check compatibility before choosing an installer
LM Studio’s System Requirements page, checked October 7, 2026, lists support by operating system and processor. Its memory and graphics figures are recommendations, not a guarantee that every model will run well on a compatible computer. Model size and context length affect resource use.

Download and install the graphical application

Open lmstudio.ai/download and select the GUI installer for your operating system and processor. The page displayed version 0.4.25 when checked October 7, 2026; use the version shown there now rather than relying on that release number.

Download the installer and open it. Follow the prompts for your operating system to complete installation. The exact installation screens depend on the selected package.

Launch LM Studio. The official getting-started guide begins: “First, install the latest version of LM Studio.” See Get started with LM Studio.
LM Studio says the application is available under its terms of use.

Download a model and start chatting
The application and a model are separate. Model weights are files that LM Studio can load; common formats include GGUF and safetensors. A computer that can install the app is not necessarily able to run every model. Loading weights and other model parameters uses system memory, and larger models or longer contexts can require more resources.

In LM Studio, open Discover and select a curated model or search for one.

Download the model you want. Check the model’s stated requirements and license; licenses and degrees of openness vary between models.

Select the downloaded model, or a model you have sideloaded. Adjust the load configuration if needed, then load it.

Enter a prompt in Chat to begin a local conversation.
This is the workflow in LM Studio’s getting-started guide. If the model does not load or runs poorly, try a smaller model or a shorter context, especially on a lower-memory computer.

Choose a realistic model for your hardware
Use the system recommendations as a starting point, then match model size and context to the computer you have. The requirements page does not promise that a particular model will run on any given configuration, and the getting-started documentation notes that loading a model consumes memory for weights and other parameters.
- Mac: Confirm that the computer is Apple Silicon and meets macOS 14.0. LM Studio says an 8 GB Mac may work with smaller models and modest context sizes; 16 GB or more is its recommendation.
- Windows: Check x64 AVX2 support or confirm that your ARM system is supported. The vendor recommends at least 16 GB RAM and 4 GB dedicated GPU VRAM.
- Linux: Confirm architecture, Ubuntu version, and the currently available package. LM Studio notes that Ubuntu versions newer than 22 are not well tested.
Those figures are vendor guidance, not performance test results. The best fit also depends on the specific model and its license terms; installing LM Studio does not make every model freely usable for every purpose.
GUI installer, llmster, and the lms CLI are different options
This guide covers the graphical application. The download page separately describes llmster as a headless daemon for servers, cloud instances, and CI. Developer documentation also covers the lms command-line interface, local APIs, SDKs, and compatible endpoints. Those tools serve headless or development workflows; they are not prerequisites for installing or using the GUI. See LM Studio developer documentation.
