Instagram’s proposed read-only mode is not available to users: the company told Engadget it is an “internal only exploration, not testing externally at all.” The concept would limit actions while browsing profiles, but Instagram has not announced a launch date or confirmed it will become part of Instagram Plus.
What Instagram’s read-only mode would do
App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi shared an image of the option, according to Social Media Today’s October 4, 2026 report. The described mode would let someone browse profiles without being able to perform several common actions:

That list describes the reported concept, not a feature users can switch on. Instagram’s statement to Engadget is the clearest status update: an Instagram spokesperson called it an “internal only exploration, not testing externally at all,” as quoted in Engadget’s October 5 coverage.
Can Instagram Plus subscribers use it now?
No. The available reporting does not establish read-only mode as an Instagram Plus benefit, and Instagram says the exploration is not being tested externally. There is no confirmed release date or final feature list.

Instagram Plus is a paid subscription, separate from Meta Verified. In March 2026, TechCrunch reported that Meta had begun testing Plus in a few countries. Features described at the time included viewing a Story without appearing in its viewer list, seeing aggregate Story rewatch counts, making additional Story audience lists, extending a Story for another 24 hours, spotlighting a Story, and using animated reactions. Meta did not tell TechCrunch which countries were included in that test. Those reports provide subscription context, but they do not show that read-only mode was offered to subscribers. On May 27, 2026, TechCrunch reported that Meta was rolling out Instagram Plus globally for $3.99 per month and described additional customization and Story features. Why a read-only option could matter
If implemented as described, the mode could give people a way to browse without accidentally liking a post, following an account, or sending a message. But the same limits could make profile browsing less visible to others, particularly if Story views are excluded. That raises questions about user control and possible misuse, rather than demonstrating that the feature has caused either outcome.
The available reporting includes no study, official safety evaluation, or measured user-impact data for this proposed mode. Its practical effects therefore remain unknown unless Instagram develops and releases it.
