Lightsaber-Like Plasma Antenna Uses Laser-Ionized Air to Transmit Radio Waves

A North Carolina State University team has demonstrated a way to transmit radio waves using a thin filament of laser-ionized air. A metal capacitor ring couples the radio-frequency signal to the plasma without touching it. The 2026 experiment is a transmission demonstration—not a receiver, a deployed communications system, or a solid “lightsaber” antenna.

How the laser-made plasma antenna transmits

A laser ionizes air along a narrow path, creating a plasma filament. A metal ring placed around that path acts as a capacitor. When an RF generator feeds a signal into the ring, its electromagnetic field couples energy into the filament, which radiates at the signal frequency. The feed is contactless: no wire needs to make direct electrical contact with the plasma.

The study, titled “Laser-Induced-Plasma-Filament Antenna Transmitting 30 MHz VHF,” was published in IEEE Journal of Microwaves. The 30 MHz figure is the frequency named in the study title; it should not be read as evidence of a demonstrated operating range. NC State’s report and Phys.org’s coverage identify the study and its transmission result.

What the experiment did—and did not—show

The team demonstrated transmission. It has not demonstrated that this antenna can receive radio signals. Corresponding author Prya Darshni, an NC State Ph.D. student, said: “And while we have not demonstrated its ability to serve as an antenna that can receive radio signals, there’s no reason to believe it wouldn’t also work as a receiver.” The latter is her expectation, not a reported receiver test.

The “lightsaber” comparison describes the plasma beam’s appearance. It is not a solid blade or a consumer product. The report also does not establish a communications range, efficiency, received-signal quality, field deployment, or operational system.

How this result differs from earlier air-plasma antenna experiments

Laser-created plasma antennas in air have been studied before. The significant distinction in the 2026 report is its specific laser-filament arrangement and capacitor-ring feed, rather than an unqualified claim that no plasma antenna had previously worked.

Study RF coupling and plasma sustainment Reported frequency and result
NC State, 2026 A capacitor ring couples the signal to the filament without direct electrical contact. The report describes laser-ionized air; it does not report using an external high-voltage discharge to sustain the filament. 30 MHz VHF is named in the paper title. The reported result is transmission; reception is not demonstrated. NC State and Phys.org.
Optica proceeding, 2013 RF power was inductively coupled. The laser-created plasma lasted less than 1 ns; a high-voltage Tesla-coil discharge extended its lifetime to at least 100 ns. The abstract gives a claimed tunable range of 100 MHz–1 GHz and describes RF emission detected by a remote patch antenna. These figures belong to that earlier setup, not the 2026 experiment. Optica.
Institut Polytechnique de Paris research record A short-lived laser filament was converted into a longer-lived atmospheric-pressure plasma column using an external high-voltage field; RF excitation was fed inductively and detected remotely by a conventional antenna. The record describes tunable RF emission from a meter-long column, not the NC State 30 MHz demonstration. Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

These experiments used different apparatus and report different outcomes, so the available descriptions do not support a performance ranking. Together, they show why plasma lifetime and the method for coupling RF energy have been central engineering questions.

Tuning, steering, and possible uses remain prospective

Darshni said: “The plasma beam antenna looks like a lightsaber and is tunable, meaning we should be able to transmit across a broad range of frequencies.” The team describes changing laser parameters to affect filament characteristics, including length, and proposes changing the laser’s direction to steer the beam. These are potential design advantages discussed by the researchers, not evidence of all-band performance or a demonstrated steerable radar system.

  • Innovative Natural Cooling Design (GOOZEEZOO Exclusive):Built for long-term outdoor operation, the antenna features a waterproof M-J connector, UV-resistant housing, and large ferrite magnetic core (63×38×14.55 mm) for stable impedance transformation. The air-convection cooling enclosure draws cool air from the bottom and releases heat from the top, helping maintain stable performance during extended transmissions

The researchers also point to satellite communications and space exploration as possible long-term areas of interest. Co-author Paul Franzon, a Cirrus Logic Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State, said: “In low Earth orbit, there is sufficient air to form a plasma.” That observation does not mean the antenna has been tested in orbit or that its practical orbital performance is known. Radar sweep direction and signal strength are likewise proposed applications, not reported deployments.
