A report published by Android Authority on October 5, 2026, says an APK teardown found early signs that Google may be exploring an expansion of Gemini’s Call for Me feature to personal contacts. That is evidence of work-in-progress code—not a Google announcement or a feature you can use today. The report says there is no known release date, and the feature may never launch.
What could Gemini do for personal contacts?
Android Authority’s teardown report describes introductory examples labeled “Mom” and “John.” The screens suggest Gemini might relay a message or handle a basic question on a user’s behalf. They do not establish a final list of tasks, how a call would work in practice, or whether Google will release the feature. Android Authority’s October 5 report explicitly warns that APK teardowns use work-in-progress code to predict possible features, and predicted features may never reach the public.

The report also notes an apparent opt-out for people receiving these calls in the preliminary interface. That is not confirmation of a final consent process or of how recipients would be informed. It mentions app-action permission controls in development, but says those options did not work properly in the reporter’s testing.
Can Gemini call your contacts now?
Gemini can place calls through the Phone app on Android, but that is different from having Gemini conduct a conversation or deliver a message for you. Google’s Gemini Apps Help page documents calls to contacts, businesses, and phone numbers. Its example prompt is: “I need to talk to [contacts name]. Can you call them?” That asks Gemini to initiate a call; it does not describe the speculative personal-call automation.

Google lists these requirements for using Gemini to make calls on Android:
- An Android phone or tablet with an active mobile plan.
- The Gemini app and saved contact information for the person you want to call.
- Permission for the Google app to use the Phone app.
Google also describes contact syncing, optional permissions, and settings for calls while the phone is locked. It says not to use this feature to call emergency services; for an emergency, use the device’s calling app directly.

How this differs from Call for Me
Call for Me is a separate feature from Gemini’s ordinary ability to start a call. In a September 24, 2026 report, Android Authority described the existing preview as focused on business calls, such as dealing with automated menus or waiting on hold. The report says Gemini identifies itself as an AI assistant, provides a live transcript, and lets the user take over the call. These are details of the reported preview, not confirmation of what a future personal-contact feature would do.

The same report described the preview as rolling out to US-based paid Gemini subscribers enrolled in the Phone by Google Public Beta on Pixel 11 devices. That is a dated account of preview eligibility, not evergreen availability guidance. Read Android Authority’s September 24 report.

What is still unknown
The teardown does not establish when personal calls might arrive, whether they will arrive at all, which devices or countries could support them, or what tasks Gemini would be allowed to handle. The apparent recipient opt-out is only a detail in preliminary interface code, not a confirmed policy or finished feature. Until Google announces and documents the capability, there is no basis to treat it as a way to have Gemini tell someone you are running late or speak to a family member for you.
