How Instagram Instants work
Meta announced Instants on May 13, 2026. To open the camera, tap the mini pile of photos in the bottom-right corner of the Instagram inbox, or open the standalone Instants app. Take a photo in real time, choose the recipients, and optionally add a caption. You cannot select a photo from your phone gallery or make further edits.

Meta says recipients cannot screenshot or record Instants using the feature. That is a product control, not a guarantee that someone cannot preserve or reproduce what they see by other means. If you send an Instant by mistake, Meta says you can quickly undo the send. You can also delete an archived Instant to unsend it from friends who have not opened it.

The sender’s private archive is separate from the recipient-facing photo: shared Instants can remain in that archive for up to one year, and Meta says you can make a recap from archived photos and post it to Stories. The pile of Instants in an inbox can also be snoozed temporarily.

Privacy and teen-account controls
Instagram’s block, mute, and restrict controls apply to Instants. Meta also says Teen Account and Family Center protections apply: time spent counts toward a teen’s Instagram time limit, Sleep Mode restrictions apply by default from 10 PM to 7 AM, and supervised parents are notified the first time a teen downloads the Instants app. These details come from Meta’s May 13, 2026 announcement and may change.
Feature and app availability
Meta said Instants began rolling out globally as an Instagram feature on May 13, 2026. The separate iOS and Android app was rolling out in select countries; Meta’s announcement does not name those countries or guarantee access for every account. Availability can therefore depend on your account and region.

Which should you use?
Use Instants for a quick, close-friends exchange
Choose Instants when you want to share a fresh photo with Close Friends or people you follow back, and you are comfortable with minimal editing. The inbox placement and reply options make the format suited to a small, conversational moment rather than a polished update.

Choose Stories when you want a post aimed at your follower audience or want to use editing tools. Instagram’s audience controls still matter: “follower-facing” does not mean every Story is public.

If you want to share a more lasting-style recap of your Instants as a Story, Meta says you can build one from the private archive and post it to Stories.
