Nintendo Switch Sports has no single best setup or general accessibility preset. Start with compatible Joy-Con controllers and TV Mode, then use the sport-specific options that Nintendo documents. You can recalibrate motion controls in the Switch system settings, but Nintendo’s documentation does not establish a general motion-free mode or button mapping that replaces motion gestures.
Start with a supported controller and play mode
Nintendo Switch Sports is designed for compatible Joy-Con play, with the required configuration varying by sport. Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode and recommends TV Mode for the best play experience. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with the game. Check the instructions for the sport you want to play before troubleshooting motion input: a single Joy-Con may be used for some play, while other configurations depend on the sport. Nintendo’s controller and mode FAQ lists compatibility details.

Which settings can you change?
Golf Shot Assist
To enable Golf Shot Assist, choose Options → User Settings → Other → Shot Assist. Nintendo added the feature to make Golf easier for beginners. It is available in Play Locally and Play with Friends; when you play globally, the game returns Shot Assist to Normal. These mode limits are documented in Nintendo’s update notes.

The Switch has console-level controls for customized button mapping and controller vibration under System Settings → Controllers and Sensors. These settings are not a Nintendo Switch Sports accessibility preset. Nintendo’s documentation does not say that button mapping substitutes button presses for the game’s motion gestures, so do not assume it will let you play without motion input. The system options are described in Nintendo’s controller settings overview.

How to recalibrate motion controls
If Joy-Con movement does not match your character’s actions, recalibrate the controller through the console rather than searching for a separate in-game motion calibration menu.
- Check that the console has the latest system update. Nintendo’s calibration guidance also recommends updating before calibration.
- Remove straps and other accessories from the controller.
- On the console, open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Follow the on-screen prompt and hold the controller’s + or − button when asked.
- Place the controller on a flat, stable surface with its stick facing upward, then follow the remaining on-screen instructions.
These steps come from Nintendo’s motion-control calibration instructions, which cover Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED systems. If the calibration option or prompts differ on your console, follow the current on-screen guidance.

- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
If the problem is specific to Soccer Leg-Strap Mode
Check that the Leg Strap is attached correctly, as Nintendo advises, and confirm the controller is compatible. Joy-Con 2 controllers cannot be used with the Leg Strap. If you repeatedly see a connection-unstable warning, Nintendo says wireless interference may be involved and directs players to its controller and connection troubleshooting FAQ; the warning alone does not establish that the controller is faulty.

How to turn on Soccer Leg-Strap Mode
The menu path depends on where you are playing:
- Play Globally: Highlight Soccer, then press X.
- Play Locally or Play with Friends: Press + on the Joy-Con instruction screen.
The Leg Strap is an optional input method for Soccer, not a general accessibility setting. Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with it. See Nintendo’s compatibility and mode FAQ for the current instructions.

Can you play without motion controls?
Nintendo’s reviewed documentation does not establish a general motion-free mode for Nintendo Switch Sports. The game requires supported Joy-Con controllers, and system-level button mapping is not documented as a replacement for motion gestures. That does not prove that every sport mechanic is exclusively motion-operated; it means Nintendo’s available guidance does not support promising a fully button-controlled setup. If motion input is difficult, the documented options are to recalibrate, adjust system-level vibration or button mapping where useful, and use Golf Shot Assist in its supported modes.

Nintendo recommends practicing against CPU opponents through Play Locally. Its sport-specific timing tips are technique advice, not configuration changes: for Tennis, contact the ball at its highest point for a faster serve; for Volleyball, jump shortly before a teammate sets the ball to time a quicker spike. These tips appear in Nintendo’s June 3, 2022 tips article.
