The Insta360 X5 is best for creators who want to choose the framing after filming: it records a full 360° view, then lets you turn that capture into conventional shots. Its 8K mode, low-light PureVideo option, and simultaneous flat-and-360 InstaFrame recording make it unusually adaptable, but they come with mode limits, heat and runtime trade-offs, and a more involved file workflow than a fixed-view action camera.
What the Insta360 X5 does—and what 8K means here
The X5 is a 360° camera, not a conventional camera that records a single 8K rectangular view. Its highest-resolution spherical video mode is 7680×3840 at up to 30 frames per second. After recording, you reframe the sphere into a chosen view. The export’s framing and output resolution determine how much detail remains in that conventional shot, so “8K” does not mean every reframed clip will look like native 8K flat video.

For more frame-rate flexibility, the official specifications list 5.7K recording up to 60 fps and 4K up to 120 fps. In single-lens mode, the camera records up to 4K60. It also captures approximately 72-megapixel stills (11904×5952). The X5 records 360 video in INSV and single-lens video in MP4. See Insta360’s X5 specifications for the full mode list.

Reframing action after the moment
Because the camera captures the surrounding sphere, you do not need to aim a conventional lens precisely at every part of the action while recording. That is useful for movement, travel, and situations where the direction of the best shot is hard to predict. You can choose the view later. An optional invisible selfie stick can help create a floating, third-person perspective; it is an accessory, not a requirement for recording.

Recording a shareable flat clip and keeping the 360 original
InstaFrame records an automatically framed flat video alongside a full 360° file in the same recording. It can save time when you want a ready-to-share shot without giving up the option to reframe the original later. The trade-off is that InstaFrame is limited to 30 fps and does not include HDR, according to TechRadar’s review. The official specification lists flat InstaFrame output up to 4K30.
Low-light video: PureVideo’s strengths and limits
Insta360 recommends 8K30 PureVideo for dim indoor and nighttime scenes. The company says the X5 uses dual 1/1.28-inch sensors, which it describes as 144% larger than the X4’s; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement. TechRadar’s reviewer found PureVideo a substantial low-light improvement over the X4. That assessment is specific to the reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee of the same result in every scene.
PureVideo does not offer HDR or 60 fps, as TechRadar notes. If those features matter more than the low-light mode, check the available settings for the particular recording mode rather than assuming all X5 modes share the same options.

Runtime, heat, and the practical cost of 8K
Insta360’s current specifications, accessed in 2026, give the following laboratory-tested recording times. They are test figures, not guaranteed runtimes in ordinary use; conditions and selected modes matter.
| Recording mode | Official lab-tested runtime |
|---|---|
| 8K30 | 93 minutes |
| 8K24 Endurance Mode | 115 minutes |
| 5.7K30 | 135 minutes |
| 5.7K24 Endurance Mode | 208 minutes |
These figures show the practical compromise: choosing the highest resolution and frame rate reduces the listed recording time compared with lower-resolution or Endurance Mode options. TechRadar reports that its reviewer did not experience overheating shutdowns, but warns that 8K recording can heat the camera. Outdoor movement can provide airflow, making that mode more suitable for action than for long, stationary indoor sessions.
Durability: replaceable lenses and underwater limits
User-replaceable lenses
The X5’s lenses are user-swappable, according to Insta360’s FAQ, and the company lists a replacement-lens kit in its store. Replaceability can make damage less costly to address than a permanently fixed lens, but it does not make the lenses scratch-proof or mean replacement is risk-free. Confirm that any replacement kit is specifically compatible with the X5. See the X5 FAQ and Insta360’s UK store listing.

Waterproofing
The bare camera is rated waterproof to 15 m. That rating is distinct from the deeper-use cases marketed in dive bundles. If you plan to dive beyond the bare-camera limit, verify the exact case and its stated depth before use; do not assume a bundle’s case rating applies to the camera by itself. The official specifications and UK store page list the relevant product information.
Should an Insta360 X4 owner upgrade?
The X5’s clearest upgrade case is for someone who frequently shoots in low light or values user-replaceable lenses. Insta360’s stated sensor-size comparison and TechRadar’s reviewer assessment both point to low-light improvement, though the former is a manufacturer claim and the latter a review judgment. TechRadar describes the X5 as a stronger all-around 360 option, but says someone who bought an X4 recently may not need to upgrade immediately.
Consider the workflow as well as image quality: the X5’s 360 capture offers more framing freedom, but it requires you to manage and reframe spherical footage. If your current X4 already meets your needs, the upgrade is easier to justify when the new low-light capability or replaceable-lens design solves a specific problem.

Is a 360 camera the right kind of action camera?
The main choice is flexibility versus immediacy. With a 360 camera, you capture everything around the lens and select the view later. That is valuable when framing is uncertain or you want several angles from one recording. A conventional fixed-view action camera is simpler when you know exactly what you want in frame and want a straightforward shot without a 360 reframing step. The X5 also has single-lens video up to 4K60 for a more conventional capture approach.
Compatibility, bundles, and price context
Insta360 publishes minimum mobile operating-system and chipset requirements, so check its current compatibility list before buying if you expect to edit on a phone; not every handset will support the full editing workflow. The company announced the X5 on April 22, 2025, at a US launch price of $549.99. TechRadar listed April 2025 launch prices of $549.99 / £519.99 / AU$929.99 for the standard edition and $659.99 / £609.99 / AU$1,109.99 for an Essentials bundle. Those are historical launch figures, not current quotes.
