If your Vizio TV keeps buffering, first check whether the problem is limited to one app or also affects other apps and devices on your home network. A single app failing points toward that service, its software, or compatibility; several services or devices struggling suggests a connection or internet-provider issue. Buffering alone does not mean the TV is broken.
1. Find out whether the problem is one app or the whole connection
Try another streaming app on the TV. If possible, also stream on a phone or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi. These comparisons help narrow down the cause:

- Only one app buffers: Check whether the service is experiencing a problem, whether its app is up to date, and whether it supports your Vizio model.
- Several apps on the TV buffer: Check the TV’s connection and software.
- Other devices on the same Wi-Fi also struggle: Focus on your home network or contact your internet provider.
These are diagnostic clues, not definitive tests: a service issue and a network issue can happen at the same time.
2. Check connection performance at the TV
If the streaming app offers a network test, run it on the TV. A test on a phone beside the router may not reflect the connection where the TV is installed. Netflix advises comparing your speed with its current recommendations and contacting your internet provider if the connection is below what the service recommends: Netflix’s buffering and slow-loading guidance.

A single speed test is only a snapshot. Live streaming can still stall if the connection becomes unstable during a program, even when one test looks adequate. VIZIO’s older FAQ says a stable high-speed connection is needed to avoid freezing and re-buffering; its legacy speed figure should not be treated as a current threshold: VIZIO Video Streaming FAQs.
3. Restart the TV completely
A full restart can clear a temporary TV state. Netflix’s general TV guidance is to turn the device off, unplug it when possible, wait 15 seconds, then plug it back in and try again: Netflix’s TV and streaming-player troubleshooting. The available power controls and menu names differ across Vizio generations, so consult the manual or support page for your exact model if you need an on-screen restart option.

There is also a narrow Vizio notice for certain 2016–2020 models affected by a Google Cast issue. If your model and symptoms match that notice, Vizio gives the path All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Restart TV: Vizio’s Google Cast update. This notice is specific to that issue; it is not a universal fix for buffering.
4. Restart the modem and router
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect them and allow the network equipment to reconnect to the internet.
- Retry the stream on the TV.
These steps follow Netflix’s buffering guidance: Netflix: TV show or movie loads slowly or keeps buffering.

5. Improve Wi-Fi where the TV is located
If the TV’s connection is weak or unstable, try improving the signal before buying coverage equipment. Netflix suggests moving the router and streaming device closer, keeping the router in an open location off the floor, and avoiding nearby wireless devices or appliances that may interfere: Netflix’s buffering guidance.
If the TV is still in a weak-coverage area after repositioning the router, an extender or mesh system may help extend coverage. It is a conditional option, not a general cure: first establish that Wi-Fi signal at the TV is the problem.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
6. Check app and model compatibility before switching players
Vizio TVs from different generations use different app platforms and may not support the same services. Check the streaming service’s compatibility information for your model, then install available TV and app updates using the instructions for that generation. Vizio menu labels and app-management steps vary, so use the exact model’s manual or current Vizio support information rather than relying on a menu path meant for another TV.

If the network works reliably on other devices but a built-in app remains unsupported or unusable, an external HDMI streaming player is a possible fallback. Check that it supports the service you want and works with an available HDMI input on your TV. It can bypass a limitation of the TV’s built-in app platform, but it cannot fix weak Wi-Fi, an internet outage, or an inadequate broadband connection. Netflix also recommends trying another device as part of troubleshooting: Netflix on Vizio TVs and Blu-ray players.
Before connecting a network cable
Ethernet is an option only if your particular Vizio TV has a LAN port. Port availability differs by model: Vizio lists no Ethernet on the VQD50M-0809 and Ethernet on the M706-G3. Check your model’s specifications before buying a cable: VQD50M-0809 model information and M706-G3 model information.
